AbstractSpinal metastasis is usually associated with debilitating pain and results in deteriorating life quality. The role of percutaneous management of spinal metastasis has evolved from a diagnostic role to a significant part of therapeutic options in conjunction with conventional management techniques, including radiotherapy and open surgical options. Percutaneous vertebral augmentation (PVA) showed substantial pain reduction, vertebral stabilization, and improvement of quality of life. Minimally invasive local ablative procedures (MILAPs) demonstrated significant pain reduction, local tumor burden control, and improvement of quality of life. Though combined PVA and MILAP's synergistic role in pain reduction may need additional investigation, considering different actions on spine metastasis patients, combining both techniques might beneficial to selected patients. The role of percutaneous management will likely expand since its role in improving patient's quality of life with very minimal procedure-related risk and in conjunction with future technological advancement.

The results of the territorial communities’ survey on their identification and positioning to improve the quality of life, which conducted among representatives of territorial communities of Luhansk and Donetsk regions located in the territories controlled by the Ukrainian government, were generalized. Its purpose was to determine the opinion of the respondents regarding the quality of life in the communi ties, their vision of the community uniqueness, as well as an idea of its image and positioning. Information collected on identifiers and signs of the communities’ attractiveness, the attitude of community residents to changes in the quality of life in the reform process, the desired directions for the future communities’ development, a vision of their positioning, the role of community branding and advertising. It was determined that the majority of the interviewed respondents positively assess the living environment of their communities, and not, however, associating changes for the better with decentralization. The subjective residents’ vision of their own community formed by the following main identifiers, such as the availability of administrative services, the condition of highways and sidewalks, infrastructure for recreation and leisure. The community attractiveness, according to the respondents, determined by the availability and level of administrative services, comfort of living and convenient transport location. The main obstacles for improving the quality of life, as well as the primary resources for its impro vement, are considered by the majority of respondents to be ineffective local authorities, as well as lack of initiative and activity of residents. More than 70% of respondents identified a negative impact on the development of the proximity of their community to the zone of armed conflict. The tendency of the respondents to focus more on problems than on the achievements of communities ascertained. In addition, trend of greater accentuation of respondents on the issues, as well as a certain indifference about the future of their community, in the process of determining the positioning of their own community and the vision of its image manifested most clearly in the number of uncertain options. It substantiates that the results obtained can be extrapolated to all communities in the region, and are the basis for optimizing the strategic planning process for the development of territorial communities, which will contribute to improving the life quality of population.

The objective of the present study is an investigation of the objective and subjective factors of life quality. Researchers and political leaders show increasing interest in the question: on what grounds do people judge their quality of life, what satisfies or makes them happy? Do we subconsciously make some kinds of mathematical calculations weighing our results achieved in certain areas of life to assess how we are getting on? Or rather we use one “indicator” (e.g. money, number of friends, professional recognition) and we assess our situation accordingly? These issues necessarily emerge when it comes to the consideration of the quality of life. Among factors determining life satisfaction, earnings, employment, health and relationships play significant roles. Therefore, on the leading edge of this research are primarily the cognitive factors of life quality, i.e. external factors influencing satisfaction. The present study also seeks to identify the role of health tourism in the assessment of the quality of life. Questionnaires were completed in one of the most popular tourist destinations of Hajdú-Bihar County. The 805 local respondents expressed their views primarily about factors determining their well-being and about the impacts of the dominant presence of health tourism on their lives.

Anemia is a common hematological complication in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Reduction of hemoglobin level is accompanied by a significant deterioration in the patients’ life quality. A transfusion of erythrocyte mass is used to rapidly increase the hemoglobin level in case of development of a symptomatic anemia. However, a large range of risks limit the wide use of blood transfusions. Erythropoiesis-stimulating proteins are the drugs that reduce the need for blood transfusions. Treatment with erythropoietins provides a smooth and prolonged rise in the hemoglobin level, the release of fully functional red blood cells into the blood. The use of erythropoietins can significantly improve the quality of life of cancer patients without reducing the effectiveness of chemotherapy.

‘Physiotherapy of the older stroke patient’ introduces the role of physiotherapy in stroke and the older person. The authors have provided an insight into the influencing factors for stroke management from a therapy perspective, identified the challenges surrounding the perception of the older person and facilitated understanding of the treatments available. The chapter reviews the invisible burden of stroke, impact of age, neurological changes with ageing affecting motor function, evidence from research trials, frailty, falls, common and uncommon therapy approaches, neuroplasticity, extended roles of the physiotherapist, spasticity and controversial issues. Ongoing technological advancement and the ever-increasing developments in treatment options continue to inspire clinicians worldwide. Physiotherapists maximize function, and enhance quality of life, and form a core component of the stroke multidisciplinary team. Six excellent case vignettes are presented.

The article is devoted to assessment of quantitative and qualitative human capital reproduction in energy-efficient economy provided by research of correlation between dynamics of energy consumption and transformation of life quality. The purpose of the research is to assess the role of energy-efficient economy in shaping of the conditions for human capital reproduction as a way of investment into its qualitative development. To achieve this purpose transformation of traditional spheres of sustainable development together with the implementation of the energy-efficient economy approaches in terms of maintaining of quality of human capital are considered. We conduct a study comparing several dependencies: development of productive powers - increasing requirements for the quality of human capital; ensuring effective reproduction - improving the quality of life, improving the quality of life associated with the economic system; GDP – energy consumption; GDP - CO2 emissions. The object of the study is dynamics of indicators characterizing the above dependencies, a number of the countries – members of the OECD – having an expanded human capital reproduction. Examined countries demonstrate correlation between energy efficiency of economy and quality of human capital with rather a wide variability of chosen indicators. Results of the research may become a base for forecast of development of studied indicators and their factors.
