Background: Future clinical challenges in nursing care of geriatric patients require educational courses that provide a high level of clinical reasoning skills. Serious Soap (www.serioussoap.nl/eng) is a video-based educational tool that combines entertainment with learning and reflection; it can serve as an attractive e-learning tool for nurses, nursing students, and tutors in geriatric care.Objective: This article describes Serious Soap’s development process, the lessons learned, and the most beneficial factors for student-centredness and teacher-centredness.Conclusions: The lessons learned from the development process highlight that it is important to use the experiences from previous gamification projects, co-create with target users, conduct elaborate testing and research before launching the final version, and ensure sustainability. The most valuable features for student-centeredness were the use of humor, authentic critical situations, popular actors, and interactivity. The most favorable aspects for teacher-centeredness were free accessibility of the tool, evidence-based content, and the possibility of using different features of the tool in various manners.

Abstract The purpose of this pilot project was to explore the experience of an intergenerational learning environment focused on healthy aging for nursing students and older adults. Intergenerational learning experiences provide opportunities for individuals from different age groups to communicate and participate in learning activities together. The growing population of older adults calls for increased geriatric nursing expertise. Nursing students’ attitudes toward older adults are often negative though, and result in decreased interest in geriatric nursing. The opportunity to transform nursing students’ perspectives on older adults has the potential to improve nursing care for older adults, and the number of nurses focused on geriatric nursing care. This qualitative inquiry used a convenience sample of 10 participants from a cross-listed university course on healthy aging for baccalaureate nursing students and older adult members of a lifelong learning institute. Semi- structured focus group interviews were conducted. Narrative transcripts were analyzed using an inductive approach. Analysis illustrated improved nursing students’ perspectives of older adults and aging. A similar theme was noted for older adults’ perspectives of younger adults. The importance of social interaction within an intergenerational learning environment and the need for opportunities to challenge ageist perspectives was illustrated. Increased exposure to healthy older adults, personally and professionally, may increase nursing students’ interest in geriatric nursing and improve nursing care for older adults. Future research should examine more specifically how intergenerational learning experiences can decrease ageism, improve nursing students’ and nurses’ perspectives on older adults, and improve nursing practice for older adults.

Objective. Aging is a growing public health concern for people, organizations, and governments. The current study was undertaken to provide insights into the global research output on geriatric nursing. Methods. A bibliometric study was implemented using the WoS database for the period from 1900 to 2020. Various tools and measures were used to analyze and visualized. Results. The search strategy found 4923 papers. The oldest paper was written by Beverly C. Andre in 1953. As team size increases, so does the number of citations. The USA was the active country and the highest number of coauthors. New York University was an active institution. Stig Karlsson was the most active author in Geriatric Nursing with 28 articles from Sweden, followed by Koen Milisen and Sandman, with 26 articles each from Sweden and Belgium. The most frequent words in this field were depression, malnutrition, education, Alzheimer’s disease, and dementia. The latest research themes in this field were COVID-19, interprofessional locomotive syndrome, emergency nursing, and public health. The most influential papers were specified. Journal of the American Geriatrics Society was the most active journal. Conclusions. Geriatric nursing is a rooted field and has received special attention in the last decade. Policymakers, especially in developing countries, should pay attention to geriatric nursing as a specialty of nursing to solve aging issues they would face considering the increasing elderly population.
