The concept of cold-formed light steel framing construction has been widespread after understanding its structural characteristics with massive research works over the years. Connection serves as one of the important elements for light steel framing in order to achieve its structural stability. Compared to hot-rolled steel sections, cold-formed steel connections perform dissimilarity due to the thin-walled behaviour. This paper aims to review current researches on cold-formed steel connections, particularly for screw connections, storage rack connections, welded connections, and bolted connections. The performance of these connections in the design of cold-formed steel structures is discussed.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to discuss the performance of efficient cold-formed steel (CFS) sections in building a truss system. A comparative study was performed comparing trusses built with cold-formed and hot-rolled sections.Design/methodology/approachMedium-scale specimens were fabricated and tested under monotonic loading. Closed CFS sections (tubular sections) were adopted as compression members of the truss, against the open sections (angle sections) in the hot-rolled steel truss. While as open sections (angle sections) were adopted as tension members in both these cases, the performance assessment was made on the basis of the peak loads carried by the trusses, the vertical deflections and the failure modes exhibited.FindingsThe results of this study indicated that the overall strength, strength-to-weight ratio and overall convenience in terms of cost and fabrication, in the CFS truss was better than that of the hot-rolled one. Also, the judicious utilization of steel which has limited reserves can be achieved.Originality/valueCold-formed and hot-rolled sections are widely used in the steel structures. There are advantages and disadvantages in using each of these configurations, discussed in this work. The advantages are widely known by the scientific community; however, few studies are developed with the purpose of quantifying the gains of each solution. Thus, this work emerges with great innovation, with regard to the experimental evaluation of the trusses' behavior composed of different structural sections.

Abstract Cold-formed steel structures represents an alternative to classic buildings made of hot rolled steel profiles which bring a lot of savings based on advanced calculations and also some practical measures in order to provide optimum strength and weight ratio. Due to these advantages, cold-formed steel structures are used in more technical fields including automotive industry, storage industry, military sheltering and of course building industry. The paper is focused on the economic impact of using lightweight members for the main applications of these structures – roof structures and cladding support. The comparison will be made between classic system with hot formed purlins and advanced lightweight purlins made of cold-formed steel elements, in the same practical situation.

This paper presents pin-ended compression tests on steel equal angles. Three nominal section sizes were tested. Detailed measurements of material properties, residual stresses, and geometrical imperfections were conducted. The pin ended specimens were tested with a minimal eccentricity of L/1,000 applied about the minor axis to cause compression at the tips of the legs. The test data are compared with the Indian specifications for hot-rolled steel structures. The section capacities obtained from the column tests are found to be between 15 and 40% higher than those calculated according to the specifications. It is concluded that there is no need to include the additional eccentricity specified in the steel structures standards accounting for the shift of the effective centroid, and that the eccentricity of L/1,000, specified for all section classes, should be applied to slender sections only.

To accommodate growing demands on either heavy steel structures or unique buildings with irregular configurations, built-up wide-flange steel (BWS) beams are being popularly used in modern steel construction. In current fabrication practices of BWS members, high-performance steels produced in steelmaking factories under the thermo-mechanical control process (TMCP) are typically utilized to achieve proper welding performances. However, since its basic unit price is quite higher than typical hot-rolled steel materials, this study introduced a hybrid BWS section for cost saving with no performance degradation, where high-performance TMCP steel was used in flanges, and conventional hot-rolled steel was adopted in web plate. To verify the tensile performances of a hybrid BWS section with non-uniform properties, split T tension and Charpy impact tests were conducted, and flexural tests were also carried out on hybrid and homogeneous BWS beam members. On this basis, it was confirmed that the structural performance of the hybrid BWS member is comparable with that of the conventional one with a uniform section property.

Abstract ARMCO FORMABLE 70 HR is a hot-rolled steel with excellent ductility, weldability and edge-tear resistance at a minimum yield strength of 70,000 psi (483 MPa). For this relatively high strength level, it has unusually good fabricating properties that are the result of closely controlled processing of a fully killed, low-carbon, vacuum-degassed, columbium-alloyed steel. This special composition and processing practice minimize harmful nonmetallic inclusions that hamper formability. Typical applications include automotive reinforcements, truck parts and construction components.
