A potentiometric titration method for the determination of minoxidil based on its redox reaction with K2Cr2O7 is described. The best results were observed using 1.00 x 10-3 mol L-1 K2Cr2O7 and 1.00 x 10-2 mol L-1 minoxidil solutions, and the minoxidil as titrant in 2.00 mol L-1 H2SO4 medium. The method was applied to commercial samples and compared with the results from a chromatographic procedure. Recoveries from 97.4 to 98.7 % were observed depending on the sample. Comparison with the chromatographic procedure reveled agreement within 90% confidence level.

An analysis of a relationship between fire resistance limits scatter for steel structures coated with intumescent fire retardant coating and an appropriate interval of thicknesses of the coating was carried out. A methodology for the determination of this relationship was proposed. This methodology was tested on a practical example. A steel structure with a reduced thickness of 6 mm was considered. A typical dependence of the required thickness of the structure was taken into account. A ratio of a mean square deviation of the fire resistance limit to this limit was accepted to be equal 0.1. Using these values an appropriated interval of the thicknesses of the intumescent fire retardant coating was determined. This interval can be calculated for any given confidence level. Boundaries of this interval can be not symmetric in relation to the value of the normative thickness of the fire retardant coating. The proposed methodology can be used for the determination of the required thicknesses of the intumescent fire retardant coatings on steel structures for the given r value, reduced thickness of the structure and the confidence level.

AbstractA method is presented for the X-ray spectrometric determination of copper, tin, and uranium in a bronze heat-treating material. The method is based on the irradiation of an acid solution of the sample, to which indium and zinc have been added as internal standards. Quantitative determinations of copper and tin (each in the 40 to 60% range) are calculated from the ratios of the CuKα/ZnKα and SnKα/In Kα intensities. Uranium concentration (in the 1 to 10% range) is calculated from the ratio of the ULα/ In Kα intensities, A correction for the interference of the second-order In Kβ1,3 doublet with the first-order ULα peak is described. The over-all limits of error for single determinations at the 95% confidence level are ±0,58% copper, ±0,56% tin, and ±0,31% uranium.

The reliability performance of Semiconductor Manufacturing Equipments (SME) is very important for both equipment manufacturers and customers. However, the response variables are random in nature and can significantly change due to many factors. In order to track the equipment reliability performance with certain confidence, this paper proposes an efficient methodology to calculate the number of samples needed to measure the reliability performance of the SME tools. This paper presents a frequency-based Statistics methodology to calculate the number of sampled tools to evaluate the SME reliability field performance based on certain confidence levels and error margins. One example case has been investigated to demonstrate the method. We demonstrate that the multiple weeks accumulated average reliability metrics of multiple tools do not equal the average of the multiple weeks accumulated average reliability metrics of these tools. We show how the number of required sampled tools increases when the reliability performance is improved and quantify the larger number of sampled tools required when a tighter margin of error or higher confidence level is needed.

The Vinland Map, drawn on a 27.8 × 41.0 cm parchment bifolium, is housed in the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University. In the northwest Atlantic Ocean, it shows “the Island of Vinland, discovered by Bjarni and Leif in company.” Skelton, Marston, and Painter (Skelton et al. 1965, 1995) firmly argued the map's authenticity, associating it with the Council of Basle (AD 1431–1449), that is, half a century before Columbus's voyage. Nevertheless, vigorous scholarly questioning of the map's authenticity has persisted (Washburn 1966; McCrone 1974; Olin and Towe 1976; Cahill et al. 1987; McCrone 1988; Towe 1990). We have determined the precise radiocarbon age of the map's parchment by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). The one-sigma calibrated calendrical date range is AD 1434 ± 11 years: the 95% confidence level age range is AD 1411–1468.

A simple method was developed for determining microquantities of diltiazem, based on the reduction of copper(II) in buffered solution (pH 7.0) and the use of a micellar medium containing 4,4′-dicarboxy-2,2′-biquinoline acid. The copper(I) produced reacts with 4,4′-dicarboxy-2,2′-biquinoline acid and the complexes formed are spectrophotometrically measured at 558 nm. A typical calibration graph shows good linearity (r = 0.993) from 20 to 100 μg mL–1 of diltiazem. The limit of detection and relative standard deviation were calculated as 12 μg mL–1 (99% confidence level) and 3.5% (40 μg mL–1; n = 6), respectively, with a mean recovery value of 96.5% found in pharmaceutical dosages. A straightforward and effective way to recycle the reagents is addressed. The hazardous aspects of the Cu(I)–BCA reaction are presented as well.

Two simple spectrophotometric methods are described for the determination of carvedilol (CAR). Method A is the condensation reaction of CAR with p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde (PDAB), and the reaction mixture exhibits maximum absorbance at 601 nm. Method B is based on the charge transfer complex formation of CAR with p-chloranil; the color developed is measured at 662 nm. The calibration graphs are found to be linear over 50.00–250.00 and 20.00–100.0 μg mL−1 with molar absorptivity values of 0.92×103 and 0.257×104 L mol−1cm−1 for CAR-PDAB and CAR-p-chloranil, respectively. Statistical comparisons of the results are performed with regard to accuracy and precision using Student’s t-test and F-test at 95% confidence level. The methods are successfully employed for the determination of CAR in pharmaceutical preparations, and the results agree favorably with the reference and proposed methods.

Abstract The mining organ of the longwall heading machine KGS-320 with radial tools was the subject of the analysis. Cooperation of single knife with the mined solid rock was estimated in order to determine values of the forces and moments that might occur in the mining process and to estimate the energy consumption of the mining process. Analogous determination of forces and moments values as well as energy consumption of the mining process for the whole mining organ with regard to all the knives installed. Following the thorough analysis of the solid rock mining process with the longwall tumble heading machine mining head the PC computer program simulating such organ’s mode of action has been developed. This program presents the simulation of the mining process in the part regarding direct contact of the cutting tool (knife) with the rock mass. The result of this simulation is force and moments distribution, which are transmitted via the mining organ (head) during one full turn (360o) and, as consequence, via whole longwall heading machine.
