Effects of saline irrigation water on soybean yield and soil salinity in the Murrumbidgee Valley

The effect of saline irrigation water on soybean (Glycine max cv. Chaffey) growth and yield is not known for southern Australia. Soybeans were grown on hills, on a transitional red-brown earth, with moderately saline irrigation water (0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 dS/m) for 2 seasons. Grain yield was significantly reduced when soybeans were irrigated using water with salinity >0.25 dS/m in the first year and >1.5 dS/m in the second year. The salinity of the upper 75 cm of the soil profile increased with increasing salinity of applied treatments. Salinity levels at depth indicate increased flow beyond the rootzone with increasing salinity of applied water. The use of water >0.5 dS/m is not recommended for soybean cv. Chaffey on sites where soybeans have not previously been grown.

This study documents changes in yield, growth, soil salinity (ECe) and leaf sodium (Na) and chlorine (Cl) concentrations in mature Valencia orange [Citrus sinensis (L.Osbeck)] trees on sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) rootstock in response to increased levels of Na and Cl in irrigation water. Four levels of salt, ranging from the river-water control (0.44 dS/m) to 2.50 dS/m, were applied over a 9-year period through an under-tree microsprinkler system to trees in the Sunraysia area of the Murray Valley in south-eastern Australia. A salt-balance model showed that evapotranspiration was reduced by salinity, whereas leaching fractions increased from an average 24% in the control to 51% in the most saline treatment. The high leaching fractions were achieved as a result of freely draining soils and good irrigation management, and allowed us to maintain low to moderate levels of soil salinity throughout the trial and minimised the effect of salt treatment on fruit yield. Soil salinity increased almost linearly in response to irrigation-water salinity during the first year, and fluctuated seasonally thereafter; however, very few readings exceeded 3 dS/m, even in the highest treatments. By contrast, leaf Na and Cl concentrations in the highest salt treatment continued to increase over the first 4 years. The relationship between yield and soil salinity was extremely weak, but yield did decrease as foliar concentrations of Na and Cl increased: in Year 9, leaf Na in the highest treatment relative to the control was associated with a predicted reduction of 17% in yield and 59% in annual trunk-diameter growth.

Soil and water salinity is one of the major problems in the world for agricultural production. Tomato is one of the ten most important fruit and vegetables consumed in the world, with approximately one hundred million tonnes of fresh tomato fruit being produced worldwide every year. This research was conducted to determine the different evels of EC d S m-1 in irrigation water collected from Central Farm well water and Bore well water of Agricultural College and Research Institute, Madurai and Periyar Vaigai Command water in the year 2018 were evaluated Based on their growth and yield of tomato (PKM 1) . The results indicated that there was consistent decrease in yield with increase in salt concentration in saline irrigation water and yield and it was found that the maximum salinity tolerance is 2 d S m-1.

A pot experiment was conducted at College of Agriculture, Junagadh to assess the effect of saline irrigation water on growth and yield of chickpea varieties during winter season of 2016-17.There were four levels of salinity viz., <2.0, 4.0, 6.0 and 8.0 dS m-1 and five varieties namely GG-1, GJG 3, GG 5, GJG 6 and Dahod Yellow. The highest plant height (33.56 cm), no. of branches plant-1 (7.18), no. of pod plant-1 (31.31) and no. of seed pods-1 (1.47), root shoot ratio (0.57) and seed yield (12.28 g plant-1) and stalk yield (20.55 g plant-1) were observed with variety GJG 6. Application of saline irrigation water having EC <2.0 dS m-1 was superior than other treatments for seed yield (15.29 g plant-1), stalk yield (20.50 g plant-1), plant height (39.04 cm), no. of branches plant-1 (7.92), no.of pod plant-1 (38.74) and no. of seed pod-1 (1.52). Interaction effect of varieties and salinity levels had larger influence on plant height, no. of pod plant-1,seed yield and stalk yield in variety GJG 6 irrigated with irrigation water having EC <2 dS m-1 barring plant height.

Saline irrigation water is becoming an important water source as fresh water is fast becoming a scarce resource in many areas of the world, including Eswatini, especially in arid and semi-arid regions.  A study to test the response of two varieties of spinach (fordhook giant and mustard) to salinity was conducted in a field pot experiment at the Faculty of Agriculture at the Luyengo Campus of the University of Eswatini.  The treatments were laid in a randomized block design (RCBD).  The experiment consisted of four treatments, each replicated twelve times.  Treatments were salinity levels of 0.0 dS/m, 1.5 dS/m, 2.0 dS/m and 3.5 dS/m.  All the treatments were subjected to similar agronomic practices. Spinach was grown and observed for a period of five weeks.  Plant height was measured and the number of leaves counted weekly throughout the experiment. Significant differences (P < 0.05) between salinity treatments were obtained for plant height beginning in week 2 but were more pronounced in week 3, 4 and week 5.  No significant differences were obtained for the number of leaves.  There were however, clear significant differences between spinach irrigated with none saline irrigation water compared to saline irrigation water.   It was concluded that irrigating spinach with saline water of more than 2.0 dS/m drastically reduce plant growth but not the number of leaves under the conditions of the experiment.

This field experiment examined the effects of magnesium (Mg) and phosphorus (P) fertilizers, which were given in different doses to soybean grown in different water levels, on plant water consumption, water-yield relations and grain yield factors. The experiment used a random blocks designed with three consecutive and was conducted over two years 2006 and 2007. Four different P doses (0-4-8-12 kg P da-1) and three different Mg doses (0-4-8 kg Mg da-1) were applied with three different water levels (I1, I2, I3). Cumulative pan values obtained from Class A Pan evaporation pool were applied as irrigation (I) 33% for I1, 67% for I2, 100% for I3. At the end of experiment were determined plant water consumption, water-yield relations and grain yield. At the start of irrigation, 548.00 mm, 786.00 mm and 1 017.00 mm of water were given to I1, I2 and I3 plots, respectively in the first year, and 457.98 mm, 698.02 mm and 931.00 mm irrigation water was given in the second year. Plant water consumption values (ETa) were determined as 648.00 mm, 903.00 mm and 1164.00 mm for I1, I2 and I3 parts in the first year, and 567.00 mm, 825.00 mm and 1070.00 mm in the second year. Moreover, according to experiment plots, irrigation water treatment efficiency (IWTE) varied between 0.14 and 0.53 kg m-3 in the first year and between 0.16 and 0.59 kg m-3 in the second year.

Root-lesion nematode (Pratylenchus thornei) significantly reduces wheat yields in the northern Australian grain region. Canola is thought to have a ‘biofumigation’ potential to control nematodes; therefore, a field experiment was designed to compare canola with other winter crops or clean-fallow for reducing P. thornei population densities and improving growth of P. thornei-intolerant wheat (cv. Batavia) in the following year. Immediately after harvest of the first-year crops, populations of P. thornei were lowest following various canola cultivars or clean-fallow (1957–5200 P. thornei/kg dry soil) and were highest following susceptible wheat cultivars (31 033–41 294/kg dry soil). Unexpectedly, at planting of the second-year wheat crop, nematode populations were at more uniform lower levels (<5000/kg dry soil), irrespective of the previous season’s treatment, and remained that way during the growing season, which was quite dry. Growth and grain yield of the second-year wheat crop were poorest on plots previously planted with canola or left fallow due to poor colonisation with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, with the exception of canola cv. Karoo, which had high AM fungal colonisation and low wheat yields. There were significant regressions between growth and yield parameters of the second-year wheat and levels of AMF following the pre-crop treatments. Thus, canola appears to be a good crop for reducing P. thornei populations, but AM fungal-dependence of subsequent crops should be considered, particularly in the northern Australian grain region.

SUMMARYThe groundwater in some parts of north India is generally saline and not suitable for drinking. However, it can be used for growing salt-tolerant crop plants. To explore the potential of using saline groundwater for farm production, a field experiment was conducted at Shahpur village, near Hisar in Haryana State, India, to study the effect of different qualities of irrigation water on mustard (Brassica juncea, cv. RH–30) crop growth, yield, water use efficiency and soil salinity. Treatments consisted of combinations of irrigation with saline groundwater (electrical conductivity (EC) 7.48 dS m−1), and a good quality canal water (EC 0.4 dS m−1) applied either alone, as blends or in alternate applications. In all treatments, canal water was used for pre-sowing irrigation. In mustard cultivation, saline groundwater with an EC of 7.48 dS m−1 can be used safely to supplement all post-sowing irrigations with marginal decline in crop yield. Irrigation with saline groundwater gave a yield as high as 95% of the optimum crop yield obtained with fresh canal water. The temporal variation in salinity showed that mustard yield responds to the average salinity of the soil during the growing season. Thus saline groundwater is a good water source to exploit for supplemental irrigation.

The effect of tillage and added nitrogen fertilizer on first- and second-year corn after an established alfalfa stand was investigated in field studies near Woodstock, Ontario, Five rates of nitrogen fertilizer, ranging from 0 to 160 kg ha−1, were evaluated to determine their influence on corn growth and yield in both no-till and conventional tillage systems in the first and second years of corn following alfalfa. In the first year of corn after alfalfa, grain yield and harvest index were significantly lower with no-till than with conventional tillage only in 1988. First-year grain yields were independent of nitrogen fertilizer rates in both 1988 and 1989. There was no tillage by nitrogen rate interaction in either year indicating that additional nitrogen fertilizer was not required to achieve optimum corn yields with no-till relative to conventional tillage. Yields of second-year corn increased with nitrogen rate in both 1989 and 1990. Tillage systems had no apparent influence on nitrogen availability to corn grown after an established alfalfa stand. Abstract. Subekti NA, Sembiring H, Erythrina, Nugraha D, Priatmojo B, Nafisah. 2020. Yield of different rice cultivars at two levels of soil salinity under seawater intrusion in West Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 14-20. A tendency to use saline water in rice production is rising in recent years, but the adaptation of variety under saline conditions is still questionable. The aim of the study was to evaluate the response of several rice cultivars on the growth and yield of rice under seawater intrusion in West Java. Two salt-tolerant cultivars (Inpari 34 and Inpari 35), two promising lines (PL-1 and PL-2) and two modern cultivars (Inpari 30 (Ciherang sub1) and Sidenuk) were evaluated in two soil salinity levels. In each farmer's field a Randomized Complete Block Design was applied with three replications per treatment. Results showed that Sidenuk and Inpari 30 produced same yield compared to tolerant varieties and promising lines during dry season under moderate soil salinity. There were not much different among the cultivars tested in terms of plant height and tiller number as well as the biomass and harvest index. However, under high soil salinity seed germination, plant height, number of tillers per plant, above-ground biomass, spikelet number, percent of sterile florets and productivity were significantly affected. Saline tolerant varieties Inpari 34 and Inpari 35 showed their superiority compared to non-tolerant varieties. Both varieties produced 40% higher yield than Inpari 30 (Ciherang sub 1) and Sidenuk.
