Improvement of yield and botanical composition in meadows: effects of N fertilisation, irrigation on locations having different water table levels

Meadows dominated by native herbaceous species and having a high water table are an important source of feed for livestock in semi-arid regions of Turkey. This research investigated the effects of nitrogen fertilisation (ammonium sulfate) on two meadows having different water table levels and different soils. Dry matter production was 8868 kg ha–1 at location 1 and 7276 kg ha–1 at location 2. The application of 225 kg N ha–1 increased the crude protein content of the forage from 7.1 to 10.8%. A level of 150 kg ha–1 (CP 9.6%) is recommended as a result of this study. Crude protein yield increased from 303 to 1113 kg ha–1 with the highest rate of nitrogen application. The percentage of grasses in the forage averaged 92.5% and the weeds averaged 7.5%. Increasing nitrogen fertilisation resulted in an increase in the grass percentage and a decrease in the proportion of weeds. The differences in water table depth between location 1 and location 2 were not consistent between the years, and these differences influenced the irrigation applications which were applied according to soil moisture criteria.

Animal production from pangola grass (Digitaria decumbens) fertilized with 400 and 800 lb nitrogen an acre a year was measured over a two-year period 1965-1967. The nitrogen was applied as calcium ammonium nitrate (20.5 per cent N) in split applications. These were 27.5 per cent of the total in September, December, and February, and 17.5 per cent in April. The experiment was grazed with yearling Hereford heifers on a 'put and take' system at a mean stocking rate of three beasts an acre. A mean annual production of 1139 and 1215 lb an acre was obtained from 400 and 800 lb N applications respectively. Although there was 20-30 per cent greater dry matter production containing approximately 3.5 per cent more crude protein from the higher nitrogen application for most periods of the year, this had little effect on total animal production. The highest rates of liveweight gain were recorded in the period September-December, coincident with the highest crude protein and phosphate levels in plant material. Liveweight losses occurred in winter but were reduced by 50 per cent under the higher rate of nitrogen application. The results of this experiment clearly demonstrate that high levels of animal production can be obtained from pangola grass in a subtropical environment with adequate nitrogen fertilizer, even though marked seasonal differences in growth rate of the grass occur.

This research aimed to investigate the productivity and quality of forages (including dry matter, organic matter, crude fiber, crude protein, and extract ether) in the area of Kali Kuning and Krasak River. This area was affected by Mount Merapi Eruption on 2010. The data were taken from the area around the river due to the area was found to be firstly revegetated after the eruption. The Forage classified as grass, legume and forbs. The method applied in the research was Line Intercept method which was done by seeing the botanical composition there and was performed at several observation points. The forage was taken as the sample and then calculated its production and proximately analyzed to determine its chemical composition. The results showed that around the river, the widest cover area in 2013 and 2014 was Brachiariabrizantha grasses. The largest dry matter production in 2013 was Pennisetumpurpuphoides as much as 165.57 g m–2, while in 2014 the largest production of DM was Brachiariabrizantha as much as 190.37 g m–2. Frobs with another type of weed also spread in this area. The Quality of forages around Krasak River increased in 2014 due to the addition of organic matter contained in the soil and the minerals weathering from year to year.

Birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L. ’Viking’) was seeded directly into a predominantly orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) sward following overall or banded applications of paraquat (1,1′-dimethyl-4, 4′-bipyridinium ion, as dichloride salt) or glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine, as isopropylamine salt] to determine the degree of sward control necessary for stand establishment without tillage. Effects of the herbicide treatments and the seeding on botanical composition and dry matter production were determined by a vertical intercept technique and by hand separations of harvests into botanical components. Trefoil establishment was proportional to the degree of sward control during the seeding year. Little trefoil was established by direct seeding without herbicides. The banded herbicide treatments were less effective than overall herbicide applications for trefoil establishment. Trefoil yield obtained following overall application of paraquat was approximately 65% of that obtained following overall glyphosate treatment.Key words: Dactylis glomerata, glyphosate, Lotus corniculatus, herbicide, no-tillage, paraquat

The objective was to evaluate agronomically nine sorghum-sudangrass hybrids (Sorghum bicolor × Sorghum sudanense) and the nutritive value of their respective hays. The experimental design used was randomized blocks in a 3 × 9 factorial scheme, with three replications. Three cuts were made: 42 days after germination, 29 days after regrowth, and 28 days after the second regrowth. All hybrids showed a higher number of plants ha–1 (P < 0.05) in the second cut. For the green matter and dry matter production of the hays, the values ranged from 49.16 to 62.07 t ha–1 and 9.07 to 11.43 t ha–1, respectively. There were no differences (P > 0.05) in dry matter, mineral matter, or ether extract. The hybrids 1013020, BRS 810, 1013016, and 1624F016 showed higher values of crude protein (CP) of 16.49, 16.17, 16.08, and 15.88%, respectively. Differences were observed (P < 0.05) in neutral detergent fiber (NDF) content. The hybrids 1013020, BRS 802, 1013021, 1013016, BRS 810, and 1624F006 presented lower levels of NDF (60.57, 60.74, 62.15, 62.37, 62.58, and 64.70%, respectively). The hybrids BRS 802, 1013016, BRS 810, and 1624F006, stood out above the others, presenting high forage yield and adequate nutritive value (CP content >13% and NDF content <65%).

Pasture growth, botanical composition and sheep grazing preference were measured over 20 months in tall fescue (cultivar Advance), without endophyte (Nil) or infected with AR542 (MaxPTM) endophyte, and clover pastures sown into a dryland soil, Canterbury, New Zealand. Pastures were rotationally grazed with sheep, with grazing preference for the two endophyte treatments measured in late autumn and early spring. Annual dry matter production from April 2004 to April 2005 was not significantly different between AR542 (6293 kg DM/ha) and Nil (5864 kg DM/ha) tall fescue. The number of tall fescue plants/m2 and their basal diameter was greater for AR542 (35 plants/m2, 7.5 cm diameter) than Nil endophyte tall fescue (28 plants/m2, 6.8 cm diameter). AR542 endophyte tall fescue pastures had fewer weeds, mainly annual grasses, than Nil endophyte pastures throughout the trial. Grazing preference, measured by the number of sheep grazing each plot, and decline in pasture height did not differ between Nil and AR542 tall fescue. EM SEIS NÍVEIS FREÁTICOS  Marcos Henrique Dias SilveiraAntonio Evaldo KlarDepartamento de Engenharia Rural –  Faculdade de Ciências Agronômicas – UnespBotucatu – SP  Cep: 18603-970Fone: (0xx14) 6802-7165 – [email protected]  1  RESUMO Para avaliar os efeitos de seis diferentes níveis freáticos na produção de matéria seca e na evapotranspiração real ou de cultura da aveia preta (Avena strigosa S.) foi conduzido um experimento em casa de vegetação, no Departamento de Engenharia Rural da FCA - Campus de Botucatu - UNESP.  Foram semeadas 21 sementes de aveia por vaso, construído de anéis de PVC, com diâmetro nominal de 0,15m x 0,07m de comprimento e alturas totais variando entre 0,21m e 0,91m, de modo a simular os efeitos de níveis freáticos de 0,17m, 0,31m, 0,45m, 0,59m, 0,73m e 0,87m de profundidade.  Após a emergência das plântulas procedeu-se ao desbaste,  deixando-se 8 plantas por vaso, com 06 repetições (seis vasos) para cada nível freático, totalizando 36 vasos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado.  Dados de evapotranspiração real foram coletados diariamente e computados semanalmente.  As plantas foram cortadas rente ao solo ao final da 12.ª semana após a semeadura.  Foram avaliadas as produções de matéria seca da parte aérea e do sistema radicular em cada nível freático.  Os resultados mostraram maior produção de matéria seca para o nível freático mais superficial (0,17m), com queda gradativa à medida que o nível freático se aprofundava. A evapotranspiração da cultura  mostrou a mesma tendência, variando entre 591,6 mm  no tratamento com nível freático a 0,17m de profundidade e 215,4 mm para o de 0,87m de profundidade. UNITERMOS: evapotranspiração, níveis freáticos, aveia preta.  SILVEIRA, M. UNDER  SEVERAL TABLE LEVELS.  2  ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of six different water table levels on yield and evapotranspiration of oat (Avena strigosa S.) .  21 seeds were sowed  per  pot, which was built with PVC rings (0.15m nominal diameter x 0.07m lenght).  6 water table levels were used: 0.17; 0.31; 0.45; 0.59; 0.73; and 0.87 m measured from the soil surface replicated  6  times.  The completely randomised design was used.  After seedling emergency, 8 plants were maintained  per  pot.  The evapotranspiration were daily measured from reservoirs connected to the pots.  The plants were cut at the soil surface level after 12 weeks from the sowing.The results showed greater dry matter production at the most superficial water table level with progressive decrease with water level distance from the soil surface.  The  evapotranspiration  showed  the  same tendency: the higher values occurred on the 0.17m water table (591.6 mm) until 0.87m water table (215.4 mm). KEYWORDS:  water table, evapotranspiration, Avena strigosa S.

SUMMARYThere were significant differences in dry matter yield among five forage oat varieties tested at ten environments during 1970–75. The correlation coefficients between annual rainfall and DM yield varied with variety from 0·69 to 0·88, late varieties tending to give higher yields. Lateness, and high varietal response to annual rainfall and improved environmental conditions, can be used as selection criteria in semi-arid regions. Late varieties had higher DM and lower crude protein contents, and forage produced under lower rainfall conditions tended to have more DM and crude protein.
