A critical approach proposal for training translation memory systems in translator education programs

Abstract The fast pace of todays translation market and the definite integration of translation memory systems TMS in the translators workstation have created new demands in terms of technological skills expected from novice translators. Aiming to prepare future translators to meet market demands, many translation undergraduate programs in Brazil have included the training on translation memory systems in their curricula. Applying the action-research methodology, this paper reports on the training methodology used for TMS in translation classrooms at two Brazilian public universities. The collected data in both contexts suggest that TMS may affect both the composing of the final translation and the decision-making of trainee translators and the quality of their production if they do not reflectively challenge their choices and the suggested output.

Abstract Sleep-tracking devices, particularly within the consumer sleep technology (CST) space, are increasingly used in both research and clinical settings, providing new opportunities for large-scale data collection in highly ecological conditions. Due to the fast pace of the CST industry combined with the lack of a standardized framework to evaluate the performance of sleep trackers, their accuracy and reliability in measuring sleep remains largely unknown. Here, we provide a step-by-step analytical framework for evaluating the performance of sleep trackers (including standard actigraphy), as compared with gold-standard polysomnography (PSG) or other reference methods. The analytical guidelines are based on recent recommendations for evaluating and using CST from our group and others (de Zambotti and colleagues; Depner and colleagues), and include raw data organization as well as critical analytical procedures, including discrepancy analysis, Bland–Altman plots, and epoch-by-epoch analysis. Analytical steps are accompanied by open-source R functions (depicted at https://sri-human-sleep.github.io/sleep-trackers-performance/AnalyticalPipeline_v1.0.0.html). In addition, an empirical sample dataset is used to describe and discuss the main outcomes of the proposed pipeline. The guidelines and the accompanying functions are aimed at standardizing the testing of CSTs performance, to not only increase the replicability of validation studies, but also to provide ready-to-use tools to researchers and clinicians. All in all, this work can help to increase the efficiency, interpretation, and quality of validation studies, and to improve the informed adoption of CST in research and clinical settings.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to broaden the discussion on trade-based money laundering (TBML). The literature is too narrowly focused on the misrepresentation of the value, quantity or quality of the traded goods. This focus leads to the analysis of price anomalies as a signal of over- or under-invoicing. However, TBML can also occur without manipulation of these factors. Design/methodology/approach – A review of the literature and case study of police investigations. Findings – Financial action task force (FATF) definitions are seriously flawed. The question of whether detecting TBML on the basis of statistical trade data is effective should be much more open to debate. Police investigations show that goods are shipped at their true value within the context of TBML. Research limitations/implications – Using outliers to identify and act on cases of TBML has often been propagated, but scarcely been used to actually show TBML. Real findings are needed. Practical implications – Goods intended for TBML can also be paid for in cash. These cash payments are often out of character with the normal clientele. This should alert companies and compliance sections of banks alike. Originality/value – The critique on the FATF definition opens the field for a more fitting definition. The description of actual TBML cases makes it possible to better understand this method of money laundering.

The study proposes an original version of the reorganization of the management of an educational structural unit of a university based on the “distributed leadership model”. The purpose of the study is to compare the effectiveness of bachelor’s and master’s programs in the traditional and based on the “distributed leadership model” management systems. The study showed that the qualitative transformation of the management of the university’s educational unit based on the “distributed leadership model” made it possible to delegate a significant part of the teachers’ managerial powers, which allowed positive changes in the effectiveness of education programs (quantitative and qualitative characteristics of applicants, improvement of the quality of teaching, the competitiveness of education programs etc.) implemented at the institute.

Higher education plays a crucial role in the economic and social development. In order to fulfill its role, mission, and vision, as well as enhance competitive advantages in the global integration context, universities have to put quality as the top priority. Recently, many universities nationwide have been developing quality assurance system, conducting self assessment, and pursuing accreditation in both program and institutional levels. This process aims at developing suitable action plan for quality improvement based on determined strengths and weaknesses. However, this process requires a huge effort to collect and analyze data. In order to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency, the key performance indicators (KPIs) are proposed to evaluate the quality of higher education programs in many aspects. Those KPIs can be considered as a set of statistical measures of how higher education programs are performing. This paper, therefore, provides some general definitions and proposes some KPIs in order to measure the quality of higher education programs in engineering and technology. However, findings of this study can be used as references for other programs.

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the quality of life and eating attitudes of health care students of the undergraduate programs of a public university. Method: Observational, cross-sectional, and quantitative study performed in a federal university. Three questionnaires were used for data collection: a socio-demographic and academic, the WHOQOL-BREF and the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26). Result: 399 students participated in this study, most women, average age of 22 years, average scores of EAT-26 of 15.12 and quality-of-life averages above 60 points in all domains. The students of the undergraduate program in Nutrition presented more inappropriate eating attitudes than other health care students; as the age evolves, vulnerability to inadequate eating attitudes increases; and the family income influenced negatively the quality of life in Physical and Social domains. Conclusions: Inadequate eating attitude diminishes the quality of life of health care students in all domains of the WHOOQOL-BREF.

With the advancement of technology and the large volume of data produced, processed, and stored, it is becoming increasingly important to maintain the quality of data in a cost-effective and productive manner. The most important aspects of Big Data (BD) are storage, processing, privacy, and analytics. The Big Data group has identified quality as a critical aspect of its maturity. Nonetheless, it is a critical approach that should be adopted early in the lifecycle and gradually extended to other primary processes. Companies are very reliant and drive profits from the huge amounts of data they collect. When its consistency deteriorates, the ramifications are uncertain and may result in completely undesirable conclusions. In the sense of BD, determining data quality is difficult, but it is essential that we uphold the data quality before we can proceed with any analytics. We investigate data quality during the stages of data gathering, preprocessing, data repository, and evaluation/analysis of BD processing in this paper. The related solutions are also suggested based on the elaboration and review of the proposed problems.

In Automated Machine Learning for Business, we teach the machine learning process using a new development in data science: automated machine learning. AutoML, when implemented properly, makes machine learning accessible to most people because it removes the need for years of experience in the most arcane aspects of data science, such as the math, statistics, and computer science skills required to become a top contender in traditional machine learning. Anyone trained in the use of AutoML can use it to test their ideas and support the quality of those ideas during presentations to management and stakeholder groups. Because the requisite investment is one semester-long undergraduate course rather than a year in a graduate program, these tools will likely become a core component of undergraduate programs, and over time, even the high school curriculum.
