Cet article utilise la traduction dans le but de mettre en évidence quelques malaises moraux majeurs ancrés dans la réalité quotidienne d'une culture américaine en apparence hétérogène et dont la prétention est de considérer que "tous les hommes sont semblables». La discussion porte sur deux types de relations. L'un concerne la relation oedipienne tourmentée et inquiétante existant entre les personnages de la Maison Blanche dans la série télévisée américaine « West Wing » , à savoir le Directeur de la Communication Toby Ziegler et le Président des Etats-Unis Josiah Bartlet. Le second est la relation intense et instable entre l'Amérique du moderniste Ezra Pound et son disciple juif au caractère obstiné , Louis Zukofsky. Tant dans le cas fictionnel de Toby Ziegler que dans celui non-fictionnel de Louis Zukofsky, la traduction apparaît telle que la langue et la culture des communautés immigrées se font sentir, soit dans le texte imprimé soit dans les sous-titres. Plus important encore, la traduction ne survient pas, comme Walter Benjamin le fait valoir, dans un " style linguistique plus élevé et plus pur», mais plutôt dans un style populaire, soulignant par làmême d'importantes différences culturelles souvent passées sous silence dans le discours dominant. Ainsi, l'article traite des représentations complexes des deux ensembles de relations dans les textes, ainsi que de la réalité tout aussi complexe de la politique américaine, en particulier après la récente élection du président Barack Obama.

Propõe-se, neste artigo, ao se retomarem as relações entre Filosofia e Literatura, uma discussão sobre a tradução de poesia, levando-se em conta, principalmente, o pensamento de Walter Benjamin, Roman Jakobson, Ezra Pound, Jacques Derrida e Haroldo de Campos. Para além da discussão, o trabalho traz ainda recriações de epigramas latinos da autoria de Décimo Magno Ausônio, um poeta do séc. IV e.c., também ele recriador de outros poemas. Nessas recriações, realizadas a partir da edição crítica de Roger Green, experimenta-se o exercício de enfrentamento de poemas inçados de dificuldades e, portanto, mais abertos a recriações, conforme propõe Campos. Trata-se, pois, de uma forma de investimento criativo em um dos tipos do make it new poundiano, uma vez que as recriações lidam com aspectos do extratexto cuja tradução se mostrou esteticamente potente e produtiva não via transcriação, mas via recriação, reimaginação ou reinvenção.

In this essay I discuss the emergence of the Mao cult during the Cultural Revolution in China and its appropriation in cultural revolutions in Europe and the United States to show how this image resonated with similar cults of popular icons in the West and lent itself to the formulation of theories and practices of postmodernism. The image quality of these cults facilitated the rise of the Mao-craze in the late 1980s and 1990s when political pop productions of Mao by Chinese artists emerged in New York and were then transplanted to China where they met with transfigurations of Mao’s legacy in the People’s Republic. The final stage of postmodern variations of Mao is reached with the presidency of Barack Obama in 2009 and the merging of the two leaders into Chairman Obamao or Comrade Maobama, which can be read as the end of ideological contrast between the two countries for the sake of creating a system of political interdependence for the 21st century, a postmodern prefiguration of a coming ChinAmerica.

This quarter began less than one month after the 20 January 2017 inauguration of U.S. president Donald Trump, whose stated positions on settlements and the two-state solution, at times contradicting decades of U.S. policy, had far-reaching implications for Palestinians. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu was emboldened by the regime change in Washington and the new administration's lack of organization and experience. Within two months of the inauguration, observers marked a sharp increase in the demolition of Palestinian homes and in announcements of renewed Israeli settlement construction. In fact, just two days after Trump was sworn into office, the Jerusalem municipality approved the construction of 566 new housing units, which had earlier been delayed under pressure from outgoing U.S. president Barack Obama. And on 24 January, the Israeli government announced plans for 2,500 new settlement units in the West Bank. In early February, Israeli lawmakers passed the so-called Regularization Bill, retroactively legalizing the expropriation of private Palestinian land. As settlement plans continued to grow apace, the end of the quarter saw the submission of a measure extending Israeli sovereignty to Ma'ale Adumim before a Knesset committee. Some MKs were also considering the annexation of the E1 zone into Ma'ale Adumim, which would effectively sever the northern from the southern West Bank and create a impassable zone for Palestinians around East Jerusalem. Bedouin communities inside E1 resisted persistent expulsion threats and demolition orders, while the world's soccer governing body FIFA refused to take on the issue of soccer clubs inside settlements.

The Introduction outlines the main themes of London’s West End It establishes the need for the book and unveils some of its original arguments, including the significance of pleasure districts, the populist palatial style, and the conservative cultural politics of its entertainments. The book demonstrates how the modern idea of the West End as a distinct space devoted to consumerism and entertainment developed during the course of the nineteenth century. The Introduction reveals the way the book is shaped by the work of scholars from Walter Benjamin in the 1930s through to figures such as Judith Walkowitz and Erica Rappaport in the present time. It also details what is meant by the ‘West End’ and by the term ‘pleasure district’ which, it argues, is integral to understanding metropolitan identities in the modern era.

O presente trabalho pretende apresentar algumas considerações acerca do Estado de exceção pensado por Agamben a partir do diálogo existente entre Walter Benjamin e Carl Schmitt. Para realizar tal tarefa teremos como referência basilar o capítulo “Gigantomachia intorno a un vuoto”, da obra Estado de exceção. No referido capítulo, Agamben nos revela a existência de um diálogo entre Schmitt e Benjamin que influenciou a criação do conceito de exceção em ambos. Porém, para Agamben, o conceito de exceção parece ser algo que ultrapassa a discussão realizada por Benjamin e Schmitt, revelando a estrutura jurídico-política do Ocidente.[The present work intends to show some considerations about the State of exception thought by Agamben from the existing dialogue between Walter Benjamin and Carl Schmitt. To carry out this task we will have as a reference the chapter "Gigantomachia intorno a un vuoto", from the book State of exception. In that chapter, Agamben reveals to us the existence of a dialogue between Schmitt and Benjamin that influenced the creation of the concept of exception for the both of them. However, for Agamben, the concept of exception seems to be something that goes beyond the discussion held by Benjamin and Schmitt, revealing the legal-political structure of the West.]

Abstract This article addresses the controversial question of Theodor W. Adorno’s debt to right-wing Zivilisationskritik by a close reading of his essay “Spengler after the Decline” (1950). The article shows that despite Adorno’s harsh polemics against Oswald Spengler’s Decline of the West (1918, 1922), he sought to make Spengler’s analysis of Weimar Germany’s undemocratic tendencies—“Caesarism”—serve progressive ends. However, Adorno’s essay was not just an effort at “coming to terms with the past” in Adenauerian West Germany. Reading the essay’s original 1941 version together with Adorno’s correspondence with Max Horkheimer sheds light on Spengler as an overlooked key (next to Max Weber, Sigmund Freud, and Walter Benjamin) to their Dialectic of Enlightenment, written in 1941–44. Adorno’s daring effort to appropriate Spengler’s analysis of Caesarism makes Adorno’s critical theory an asset in understanding today’s authoritarian populism.

This chapter defines what the concept of “objectivity” meant for Straub and Huillet and the history and recurrence of the term in modern literature. It details the history of the Objectivists, a group of formally radical, leftist, and mainly Jewish poets who emerged in 1930s America under the influence of William Carlos Williams and Ezra Pound and whose major representatives include Louis Zukofsky, George Oppen, and Charles Reznikoff. They received little attention in their time and only marginal attention decades later, but their working methods and philosophies are strikingly similar to the cinematic practices of Huillet and Straub.
