Overriding syntactic islands with prosodically marked wh-scope in South Kyŏngsang Korean and two dialects of Japanese

This article explores the effect of discourse context and prosody on the resolution of wh-scope ambiguity in Tokyo Japanese, Fukuoka Japanese, and South Kyŏngsang Korean. It focuses on wh-islands in particular. There is little consensus in the literature as to whether wh-island effects are present in Japanese or Korean (Huang 1982, Nishigauchi 1990, Lee 1982, Suh 1987, among others). A production study, in which a scope-ambiguous wh-interrogative was preceded by a disambiguating discourse context, demonstrates that speakers’ scope interpretation is consistent with the preceding discourse context. An additional comprehension study reveals that prosodic wh-scope marking observed in the languages studied improves the acceptability of the matrix scope readings in violation of wh-islands. The experimental results support the view that wh-island effects can be overridden by plausible discourse contexts as well as the appropriate prosodic marking of wh-scope. These results highlight the interaction of grammatical knowledge, contextual factors, and prosody.

The equation ε eff ∝ (ϕc - ϕ)-s which shows the relationship between effective dielectric constant (εeff) and the filler concentration (φ), is widely used to determine the percolation behavior and obtain parameters, such as percolation threshold φc and the power constant s in conductor–dielectric composites (CDCs). Six different systems of CDCs were used to check the expression by fitting experimental results. It is found that the equation can fit the experimental results at any frequency. However, it is found that the fitting constants do not reflect the real percolation behavior of the composites. It is found that the dielectric constant is strongly dependent on the frequency, which is mainly due to the fact that the frequency dependence of the dielectric constant for the composites close to φc is almost independent of the matrix.


The aim of this work is to introduce bacteria into the matrix of natural phosphate to catalyze the phenol oxidation in the wastewater.This electrode, designated subsequently by bacteria-NP-CPE, Showed stable response and was characterized with voltammeter methods, as cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and DRX. The experimental results revealed that the prepared electrode could be a feasible for degradation of hazardous phenol pollutants in the wastewater.

Nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) has been introduced as an efficient way to reduce the complexity of data compression and its capability of extracting highly interpretable parts from data sets, and it has also been applied to various fields, such as recommendations, image analysis, and text clustering. However, as the size of the matrix increases, the processing speed of nonnegative matrix factorization is very slow. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a parallel algorithm based on GPU for NMF in Spark platform, which makes full use of the advantages of in-memory computation mode and GPU acceleration. The new GPU-accelerated NMF on Spark platform is evaluated in a 4-node Spark heterogeneous cluster using Google Compute Engine by configuring each node a NVIDIA K80 CUDA device, and experimental results indicate that it is competitive in terms of computational time against the existing solutions on a variety of matrix orders. Furthermore, a GPU-accelerated NMF-based parallel collaborative filtering (CF) algorithm is also proposed, utilizing the advantages of data dimensionality reduction and feature extraction of NMF, as well as the multicore parallel computing mode of CUDA. Using real MovieLens data sets, experimental results have shown that the parallelization of NMF-based collaborative filtering on Spark platform effectively outperforms traditional user-based and item-based CF with a higher processing speed and higher recommendation accuracy.

Abstract This article is about different types of Subject–Verb inversion (nominal, pronominal, and complex inversion) in sentences introduced by ainsi ‘so, in this way’. We first make a distinction between four main interpretations: manner adverb ainsi, quotative ainsi, consecutive ainsi (expressing either an intentional or an unintentional consequence), and illustrative ainsi. On the basis of a corpus study, we show that nominal inversion often (but not always) combines with the manner interpretation, whereas the predominant function of ainsi + pronominal/complex inversion is to introduce an example or a consequence of the preceding discourse context. The data also contribute to the debate about the grammaticalization path of ainsi. Firstly, the unintentional consequence interpretation is argued to be a “bridging context” between manner and unintentional consequence. Secondly, given the preponderance of the illustrative interpretation, we argue that this under-researched interpretation be taken up in future diachronic and synchronic analyses of ainsi and its cross-linguistic counterparts.

Recent approaches for reconstructing 3D scenes from image collections only produce single scene models. To build a unified scene model that contains multiple subsets, we present a novel method for registration of 3D scene reconstructions in different scales. It first normalizes the scales of the models building on similarity reconstruction by the constraint of the 3D position of shared cameras. Then we use Cayley transform to fit the matrix of coordinates transformation for the models in normalization scales. The experimental results show the effectiveness and scalability of the proposed approach.

Matrix geometry techniques are applied to predicting three-dimensional cutting forces. In the present model a specific cutting plane is located and two-dimensional metal cutting theory is applied. Force predictions in this plane are then matrix transformed to three orthogonal forces acting on the cutting tool. Experimental results show the matrix model accurately predicts three-dimensional cutting forces in turning of long slender workpieces. Experimental results are also compared to other analytical models described in the literature.

Typical testors are useful tools for feature selection and for determining feature relevance in supervised classification problems. Nowadays, computing all typical testors of a training matrix is very expensive; all reported algorithms have exponential complexity depending on the number of columns in the matrix. In this paper, we introduce the faster algorithm BR (Boolean Recursive), called fast-BR algorithm, that is based on elimination of gaps and reduction of columns. Fast-BR algorithm is designed to generate all typical testors from a training matrix, requiring a reduced number of operations. Experimental results using this fast implementation and the comparison with other state-of-the-art related algorithms that generate typical testors are presented.

The influence of basalt fibres and aggregates on the thermal expansion of cement composites is analyzed. Four different composite mixes based on aluminous cement are designed and tested. Experimental results show that the application of basalt components leads to the reduction of the increase of open porosity after high temperature loading from 47% to 36%, as compared with the reference mix. The matrix densities exhibit almost similar values for all studied composites; the differences are only up to 16%. The thermal strain is more than 50% lower when basalt aggregates are used instead of silica sand.

We proposed an online method of tracking the tunnel cable based on egomotion estimation. The method is firstly applied key point detection algorithm to extract feature points, and then the points are matched to estimate the matrix of egomotion representing the camera movement. Finally, we use the matrix to locate a mask around the cable in each frames captured inside the power line tunnel. The experimental results show robustness and efficiency of our method.

By means of the measurement of creep curves and microstructure observation, the influence of T6 heat treatment on the microstructure and creep properties of the wrought Ti-6Al-4V the alloy has been investigated. The experimental results showed that the microstructure of the wrought alloy consists of the strip-like +  phases, which results in the alloy displaying a higher strain rate and shorter creep life under the test condition of 575 MPa and 400°C. After T6 treatment, the creep life of the alloy at same conditions enhanced to 548 h from 66 h. Microstructure of T6 treated alloy consisted of the primary  and /phases, and signification amount of the bundle-likephase precipitated along the different orientations in the grains, this is a main reason of enhancing creep life of the alloy. During forging, the denser dislocation rows were activated in the local region of the matrix in the alloy. During creep, the deformed mechanism of the alloy was the double orientations slip of <a> and <a+c> dislocations activated on the pyramidal planes in  phase.
