Propagation and cultivation of Gracilaria in China.

Abstract Gracilaria has a long history of cultivation and utilization in China and is now widely cultured in ponds and tanks in the coastal area. G. tenuistipitata var. lui and G. lemaneiformis are the two main species cultivated. Spore collection and micropropagation are used for providing seed of Gracilaria. Ground planting and raft cultivation are the two main culture methods. Polyculture with fish, shrimp and filter-feeding bivalves is also practised in many locations. Strain selection and genetic analysis are conducted for both wild and cultured strains.

Abstract Background Lipoprotein glomerulopathy (LPG) is a rare autosomal dominant disease caused by mutations in APOE, the gene which encodes apolipoprotein E. LPG mainly affects Asian individuals, however occasional cases have also been described in Americans and Europeans. Herein we report two unrelated Brazilian patients with LPG in whom genetic analyses revealed the APOE-Osaka/Kurashiki variant. Case presentation - case 1 A 29-year-old Caucasian male sought medical attention with complaints of face swelling and foamy urine for the last 3 months. He denied a family history of kidney disease, consanguinity, or Asian ancestry. His tests showed proteinuria of 12.5 g/24 h, hematuria, serum creatinine 0.94 mg/dL, albumin 2.3 g/dl, total cholesterol 284 mg/dL, LDL 200 mg/dL, triglycerides 175 mg/dL, and negative screening for secondary causes of glomerulopathy. A kidney biopsy revealed intraluminal, laminated deposits of hyaline material in glomerular capillaries consistent with lipoprotein thrombi. These findings were confirmed by electron microscopy, establishing the diagnosis of LPG. His apolipoprotein E serum level was 72 mg/dL and genetic analysis revealed the APOE pathogenic variant c.527G > C, p.Arg176Pro in heterozygosis, known as the Osaka/Kurashiki mutation and positioned nearby the LDL receptor binding site. Case 2 A 34-year-old Caucasian man sought medical assessment for renal dysfunction and hypertension. He reported intermittent episodes of lower-limb edema for 3 years and a family history of kidney disease, but denied Asian ancestry. Laboratorial tests showed BUN 99 mg/dL, creatinine 10.7 mg/dL, total cholesterol 155 mg/dL, LDL 79 mg/dL, triglycerides 277 mg/dL, albumin 3.1 g/dL, proteinuria 2.7 g/24 h, and negative screening for secondary causes of glomerulopathy. His kidney biopsy was consistent with advanced chronic nephropathy secondary to LPG. A genetic analysis also revealed the Osaka/Kurashiki variant. He was transplanted a year ago, displaying no signs of disease relapse. Conclusion We report two unrelated cases of Brazilian patients with a diagnosis of lipoprotein glomerulopathy whose genetic assessment identified the APOE-Osaka/Kurashiki pathogenic variant, previously only described in eastern Asians. While this is the second report of LPG in Latin America, the identification of two unrelated cases by our medical team raises the possibility that LPG may be less rare in this part of the world than currently thought, and should definitely be considered when nephrotic syndrome is associated with suggestive kidney biopsy findings.

1. The life history of N. battus is described, and a comparative description of the life history of N. filicollis is given.2. The life histories of these two species are compared with those of N. spathiger and N. helvetianus, two closely related species, and are shown to follow the same basic pattern, with minor variations in timing which appear to be specific in nature, and not related to differences in culture methods or host species.3. The pathogenesis of Nematodirus species is discussed and related to the migration of larvae into the intestinal mucosa during development.

Background: In recent years, Infectious bursal disease is continuously occurring even after vaccination in India and requires an inclusive diagnosis. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to diagnose IBD through molecular and culture methods. Methods: One pooled sample, from each of 54 flocks having birds with IBD like symptoms, was collected. History of bird type, age and vaccination was recorded. Samples were subjected to RT-PCR, egg embryo culture and chicken fibroblast cells culture. Result: A total of 49669 out of 517900 (9.59 %) of birds, aging 3-6 weeks, were displaying the signs similar to IBD.In RT-PCR, 21 (38.88%) samples were found positive which belonged to11 (52.38%) vaccinated and 10 (47.62%) unvaccinated flocks.The RT-PCR positive samples were successfully cultivated for the virus through egg embryo and cell culture. The CEF culture was found least sensitive compared to egg embryo culture and RT-PCR.

AbstractLandraces (including heritage varieties) are an important agrobiodiversity resource offering considerable value as a buffer against crop failures, as a crop for niche markets, and as a source of diversity for crop genetic improvement activities underpinning future food security. Home gardens are reservoirs of landrace diversity, but some of the accessions held in them are vulnerable or threatened with extinction. Those associated with seed saving networks have added security, for example, ca. 800 varieties are stored in the Heritage Seed Library (HSL) of Garden Organic, UK. In this study, Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphisms-based genetic analysis of accessions held in the HSL was used to (a) demonstrate the range of diversity in the collection, (b) characterize accessions to aid collection management and (c) promote broader use of the collection. In total, 171 accessions were included from six crops: Vicia faba L., Pisum sativum L., Daucus carota L., Cucumis sativus L., Lactuca sativa L. and Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala (DC.) Metzq. Average expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.18 to 0.28 in D. carota; 0.02–0.18 in P. sativum; 0.05–0.18 in L. sativa; 0.15–0.26 in B. oleracea var. acephala; 0.15–0.37 in C. sativus and 0.07–0.36 in V. faba. Genetic diversity and Fst values generally reflected the breeding system and cultivation history of the different crops. Comparisons of the diversity found in heritage varieties with that found in commercial varieties did not show a consistent pattern. Principal coordinates analysis and Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean cluster analysis were used to identify four potential duplicate accession pairs.

Abstract Background Family history is one of the risk factors for pancreatic cancer. It is suggested that patients with pancreatic cancer who have a familial history harbor germline pathogenic variants of BRCA1 and/or BRCA2 (BRCA1/2), PALB2, or ATM. Recently, some germline variants of familial pancreatic cancers (FPCs), including PALB2, have been detected. Several countries, including Japan, perform screening workups and genetic analysis for pancreatic cancers. We have been carrying out active surveillance for FPC through epidemiological surveys, imaging analyses, and genetic analysis. Case presentation Here, we present the case of a female patient harboring pathogenic variants of PALB2 and NBN, with a family history of multiple pancreatic cancer in her younger brother, her aunt, and her father. Moreover, her father harbored a PALB2 pathogenic variant and her daughter harbored the same NBN pathogenic variant. Given the PALB2 and NBN variants, we designed surveillance strategies for the pancreas, breast, and ovary. Conclusions Further studies are required to develop strategies for managing FPCs to facilitate prompt diagnosis before their progression.

O texto trata do meio ambiente rural da Região Metropolitana de Curitiba e do Litoral Norte do Paraná a partir da sua heterogeneidade, do rural como espaço de interesses ambientais conflitantes, como espaço do risco socialmente construído, como espaço de reencontro com a natureza e como espaço de surgimento de novos atores sociais. Em função dos processos organizativos em curso nos espaços rurais, e em função do reconhecimento da diversidade de situações socioambientais existentes e das distintas estratégias implementadas pelos diferentes atores para se reproduzir, pode-se dizer que existe uma vitalidade dos grupos sociais rurais para recriar suas trajetórias e inscrevê-las como elementos da historicidade do seu território. Socio-environmental dimensions of contemporary rurality Abstract The text addresses the rural environment in the Curitiba Metropolitan Area and in Paraná’s northern coastal area in its heterogeneity, rural area as a space of conflicting environmental interests; as a space of socially created risk; as a space of reencounter with nature; and as a space for the emergence of new social actors. Owing to the organizational processes that are taking place in rural areas, and as a function of acknowledging the diversity of existing socio-environmental situations and different strategies implemented by different actors to reproduce themselves, it can be said that there is vitality in the rural social groups as they recreate their trajectories and include them as elements of the history of their territory.

The comments by A. Romero and S. Kannada (2006. Can. J. Zool. 84: 1059–1065) provide a brief summary of North Atlantic whaling history as a critique of T. Rastogi et al. (2004. Can. J. Zool. 82: 1647–1654) . However, they fall far short of providing an accurate review of whaling history in this region. The authors present a number of factual errors, misuse several key sources, and make significant omissions, ultimately defeating the purpose of providing information to biologists, managers, and historians. In this comment I highlight the mistakes in their representation of the history of North Atlantic whaling for bowhead whales ( Balaena mysticetus L., 1758). There are unacceptable errors for most nations covered, and for American whaling in particular. The authors assert that over 30 000 bowhead whales were landed by Yankee whalers in the North Atlantic when the vast majority were in fact taken on the Pacific grounds. Although a summary of whaling history is an admirable goal and of potential value, it is unfortunate that the authors missed such an opportunity by failing to adequately research this topic, failing to include important citations, and by including sources that do not provide the information indicated. Providing a whaling summary with such errors and omissions only adds further confusion to an already confusing theme.
