On lateritic podzolic soils in Western Australia Eucalyptus calophylla is resistant to Phytophthora cinnamomi whereas Eucalyptus marginata is susceptible and eventually killed by the pathogen. On loam soils both eucalypts are resistant. Possible mechanisms for resistance of E. calophylla in lateritic soil and the inhibitory action of loam soils were investigated. Aseptically raised eucalypt seedlings succumbed to infection in liquid culture tubes. The mechanism of infection was compared by light and electron microscopy which showed similar fungal invasion and penetration into roots of both eucalypt species. Vegetative hyphae initially penetrated intercellularly and proliferated rapidly within cortical and stelar tissue. Intracellular invasion of these tissues occurred 48hr after initial infection through dissolution of the host cell wall. Chlamydospores were formed within a number of cortical cells. Unsuberized roots of mature trees produced aseptically showed reactions to invasion similar to those of the eucalypt seedling roots. Suberized roots were not invaded. The addition of small quantities of lateritic soil to sterile sand so as to introduce soil micro-organisms without altering the chemical and physical status of the sand, and subsequent inoculation of the sand with P.cinnamomi, resulted in a reduction of root damage on both eucalypts when compared with seedlings raised in sterile sand. Roots of E.calophylla were less severely damaged than those of E.marginata. The addition of small quantities of loam soil significantly reduced root damage in seedlings of both species. These results parallel both pot experiments and field observations, and suggest that microorganisms of the rhizosphere may be an important factor in the resistance of E.calophylla to infection, and in the inhibitory effect of loam soil on P.cinnamomi.

Superficial dermatophyte infections, commonly known as tineas, are the most prevalent fungal ailment and are increasing in incidence, leading to an interest in alternative treatments. Many floral honeys possess antimicrobial activity due to high sugar, low pH, and the production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) from the activity of the bee-derived enzyme glucose oxidase. Australian jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata) honey produces particularly high levels of H2O2 and has been found to be potently antifungal. This study characterized the activity of jarrah honey on fungal dermatophyte species. Jarrah honey inhibited dermatophytes with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 1.5–3.5% (w/v), which increased to ≥25% (w/v) when catalase was added. Microscopic analysis found jarrah honey inhibited the germination of Trichophyton rubrum conidia and scanning electron microscopy of mature T. rubrum hyphae after honey treatment revealed bulging and collapsed regions. When treated hyphae were stained using REDOX fluorophores these did not detect any internal oxidative stress, suggesting jarrah honey acts largely on the hyphal surface. Although H2O2 appears critical for the antifungal activity of jarrah honey and its action on fungal cells, these effects persisted when H2O2 was eliminated and could not be replicated using synthetic honey spiked with H2O2, indicating jarrah honey contains agents that augment antifungal activity.

A study of foraging by 10 bird species suggests that selective logging of large Eucalyptus marginata will only have affected Melithreptus lunatus, but that proposed silvicultural treatments, including removal of Banksia grandis, may affect several other bird species.

Introduction: Nipple and areola reconstruction have recently become in demand because more women are having breast surgery because of breast cancer diagnoses. Many methods for reconstructing the nipple and areola of the breast have been described and several treatment methods have been developed to improve the aesthetic results. The purpose of this paper is to describe one method, dermatography, a refined method of medical tattooing and the results obtained from this method. Materials and Methods: Over 10 years, 112 patients were treated with dermatography for nipple and areola reconstructions. Of these, 89 patients had received a unilateral reconstruction and 23 received a bilateral reconstruction. The first dermatographic treatment was given 8–12 months after the last intervention by the plastic surgeon. The average session lasted 45 minutes. Results were assessed by means of a short questionnaire. Results over time were evaluated by comparing pictures from previous sessions. Dermatography uses a modified tattooing called a dermainjector machine. Keloidectomy is the technique used to reduce keloid in postoperative scars. The needles of the dermainjector are positioned at an angle of 70–90 degrees to the scar surface. Small parts of the keloid are removed. At the same time pigmentation is performed. Results: Patients evaluated their results as satisfactory. Pigmentation over 5 years was judged to be stable with minor loss of pigment in only 6% of the patients, all of whom received radiation therapy for their cancer. Dermatography was well tolerated by the patients. None of the patients required local anesthesia. Discussion: Patients receiving total resection of their breasts are getting younger and perceiving the results as a severe deformation of their bodies. Results of reconstruction are judged very critically. We found that our patients considered the general visual aspect of the nipple and areola shape more important, and most of the patients did not consider reconstruction of the actual nipple mound to be necessary.

A refined method for interpreting the Vickers composite microhardness measurement for multilayer materials having layers of arbitrary plating thickness is first presented. The position of an “effective substrate” is found using the concept of the “plastic boundary,” and the depth-wise deformation of each layer is considered in a double-iterative procedure which converges fast. This computational method is then extended from pyramidal indenters to conical and spherical indenters (e.g., Meyer’s). For its confirmation, experimental investigations are carried out for two configurations of Cu/Ni/Au sandwiches, using different diameter spherical indenters and spherical tipped cones, through and well above the microhardness load range. The general rules for composite action are established.
