As a video coding standard, H.264 achieves high compress rate while keeping good fidelity. But it requires more intensive computation than before to get such high coding performance. A Hierarchical Multi-level Parallelisms (HMLP) framework for H.264 encoder is proposed which integrates four level parallelisms - frame-level, slice-level, macroblock-level and data-level into one implementation. Each level parallelism is designed in a hierarchical parallel framework and mapped onto the multi-cores and SIMD units on multi-core architecture. According to the analysis of coding performance on each level parallelism, we propose a method to combine different parallel levels to attain a good compromise between high speedup and low bit-rate. The experimental results show that for CIF format video, our method achieves the speedup of 33.57x-42.3x with 1.04x-1.08x bit-rate increasing on 8-core Intel Xeon processor with SIMD Technology.

There is a great consumption of grease in an excavator (∼200 Kg/year). This big amount of lubricant is poured directly to the environment. A grease based in sunflower oil and polymer thickener has been developed. An extensive tribological characterization has been carried out in order to ensure a good compromise between EP and AW properties so that the grease could be used in two different applications: in the reduction gear (crown) and in the articulations (bushing/pin). The performance of the biogrease has been compared with two reference mineral lubricants.

The Excel Cell Separator produced by Dideco represents a good compromise between automation and Platelet efficiency. Platelet activation is a phenomenon that we can find with the concentrates of all cell separators. Although, the complement activation of Excel is extremely lower in comparison with the same data obtained using all the other cell separators, the 5-day storage is acceptable. It will be important to research the bacteriological controls. Like the pH of the platelet bags, because in certain cases it was too low. For the future it will be interesting to study the possibility to predict the quantity of platelets collected having a system that is adaptable with the donor parameters.

Numerous leak detection systems (LDS) using a variety of technologies are on the market. Since LDS are designed for a particular use, then the evaluation and selection process requires suitable metrics and involvement from all stakeholders. This paper proposes to use15 criteria for selection of LDS. Each criterion is first rated for their importance by a number of experts. Then, the same experts are asked to rate a list of candidate LDSs. Fuzzy TOPSIS is used to aggregate Experts’ judgment. A case study is presented to demonstrate the application of the method. This method would indicate how a good compromise might look like. This could aid the decision-maker to weigh options and set priority and decide on a system.

AbstractIt is experimentally known that the linearity and sensitivity of the position sensitive detectors (PSD) are dependent on the resistance of the collecting layer and of the load resistance, mainly if the detection is based on the measurement of the photo-lateral voltage. To determine the value of the load resistance to be used in metal - insulator - semiconductor (MIS) PSDs structures that lead to the maximum value of sensitivity and linearity, we propose an electrical model through which it is able to simulate the proper sensor response and how the load resistance influence the results obtained. This model is valid for PSDs where the resistance of the collecting resistive layer is quite low (≤ 500 Ω), leading to a low output impedance. Under these conditions we conclude that the value of the load resistance should be of about 1 kΩ in order to achieve a good compromise between the linearity and the sensitivity of the PSD. This result is in agreement with the set of experiments performed.

This study compared changes in the energy time-profiles and related parameters in pole vaulting using three body models. Two-dimensional kinematics were collected from 20 trials (5.20-6.01 m) performed by 10 athletes during a competition. The linear and angular kinetic, potential, and mechanical energy time-profiles were obtained from three pole vaulter models composed of 12, 5, and 3 segments (M12, M5, and M3, respectively). The energy values of M5, compared to those of M3, were more similar to M12 and appeared to be a good compromise between the decreased number of digitized points and the reliability of the energetic outcomes in pole vaulting.

Objective: To evaluate the performance of gender detection tools that allow the uploading of files (e.g., Excel or CSV files) containing first names, are usable by researchers without advanced computer skills, and are at least partially free of charge. Methods: The study was conducted using four physician datasets (total number of physicians: 6,131; 50.3% female) from Switzerland, a multilingual country. Four gender detection tools met the inclusion criteria: three partially free (Gender API, NamSor, and genderize.io) and one completely free (Wiki-Gendersort). For each tool, we recorded the number of correct classifications (i.e., correct gender assigned to a name), misclassifications (i.e., wrong gender assigned to a name), and nonclassifications (i.e., no gender assigned). We computed three metrics: the proportion of misclassifications excluding nonclassifications (errorCodedWithoutNA), the proportion of nonclassifications (naCoded), and the proportion of misclassifications and nonclassifications (errorCoded). Results: The proportion of misclassifications was low for all four gender detection tools (errorCodedWithoutNA between 1.5 and 2.2%). By contrast, the proportion of unrecognized names (naCoded) varied: 0% for NamSor, 0.3% for Gender API, 4.5% for Wiki-Gendersort, and 16.4% for genderize.io. Using errorCoded, which penalizes both types of error equally, we obtained the following results: Gender API 1.8%, NamSor 2.0%, Wiki-Gendersort 6.6%, and genderize.io 17.7%.Conclusions: Gender API and NamSor were the most accurate tools. Genderize.io led to a high number of nonclassifications. Wiki-Gendersort may be a good compromise for researchers wishing to use a completely free tool. Other studies would be useful to evaluate the performance of these tools in other populations (e.g., Asian).

An important feature of observations made outside the atmosphere from manned or unmanned spacecrafts is the reliability and ease of operation, speed and accuracy in the collection of data. A good compromise including the above features is the development of image tube techniques in skilfully matching optics and electronics.
