80 salesmen were randomly assigned to one of two survey conditions. In one the interviewer represented himself as from a local University and in the other the interviewer said he represented Marketing Facts, a fictitious firm. The more trustworthy source resulted in a significantly higher response rate.

Abstract This research note identifies for the first time the principium on book I of the Sentences by the prolific polymath Henry of Langenstein (†1397). This discovery, when combined with the four principia of the Augustinian Denis of Modena, provides the evidence necessary to demonstrate that Langenstein lectured on the Sentences at Paris in 1371-1372. The note also establishes the identity of the other eight bachelors of theology who participated in the principial debates that year.

Two related issues have developed in the scale analysis of voting in the U. S. Congress. One is methodological; it concerns the appropriate dimensionalizing model. The other is more substantive, entailing interpretation of the extent to which voting dimensions carry an ideological component. Kenneth Koford contributed to consideration of these issues in his research note, “Dimensions in Congressional Voting,” in the September 1989 issue of this Review. In this controversy, his claims are challenged vigorously by Keith T. Poole and Howard Rosenthal. In turn, Koford defends his argument that “much roll call voting in Congress does not fit a single dimension.”

A flickering light can be seen during a saccadic eye movement as a pattern of contours known as a phantom array. On repeated pairs of trials, observers made saccades across a narrow (1 arc minutes), bright (10−4 cd/m2) source of flickering light and were required to detect the phantom array. On one of each pair of trials, chosen at random, the light flickered at 60 kHz and on the other at a frequency chosen in the range 1–11 kHz. In two such studies, a few observers were reliably able to discriminate 11 kHz from 60 kHz on the basis of the visibility of the phantom array. The average threshold at which the array was visible was about 6 kHz and therefore double that previously obtained with larger targets. Those observers who were able to see the phantom array tended reliably to report more symptoms of visual discomfort in everyday life.

This Research Paper will coverthe concept of–whether women have equal shares over the coparcenary property or not & on the other hand it will also discuss the landmark judgment of Vineeta Sharma V/S Rakesh Sharma which has opened up a space for the women to have equal shares in the ancestral property of Hindu Undivided Family.Since the inception of the Hindu Succession Act, 1956 the provision for the division of property of Hindu Undivided Family was only limited to the sons but the amendment of 2005 made some of the special changes to the act, adding daughters as the equal shareholders to the coparcenary property and even this amendment providedthat, the daughter can be the Karta of the Hindu Undivided Family. With special reference to the case of Vineeta Sharma vs Rakesh Sharma this research note will provide in-depth analysis with conflicting case laws where it will be put forth whether the coparcenary property are the property of the sons or even the daughter can claim for equal shares over the Hindu Undivided Family property.

This research note explores the biography and visit of the first Muslim visitor to Japan. This figure known as Sādōulǔdīng 撒都魯丁 visited Japan as part of a Mongol envoy in 1275CE, which ultimately ended in his execution in the country. Very little research has been conducted on Sādōulǔdīng, and therefore this note begins by evaluating relevant primary sources in order to assess what information can be garnered about this figure and his visit. Hitherto most scholars have suggested that Sādōulǔdīng was either a Uyghur or an Arab. This note, on the other hand, offers a new hypothesis; namely that there is a high probability that Sādōulǔdīng was of Persian ancestry. In the final part of the note, some thoughts on the significance of his visit to Japan both historically and contemporarily are presented.

Two rhymed and metered messages were re-written to remove those poetic qualities of thyme and meter without otherwise changing the messages. A rhymed version of one message and an unrhymed version of the other message were read by 158 college students who then evaluated the authors by checking “yes” or “no” to whether each author was “probably a professional communicator” and “probably college-educated.” They also rated each author on a set of semantic differential scales. Analysis indicated that the authors of rhymed and metered messages enhance their “images” by using the poetic form.

This research note updates Cormac Ó Gráda’s (1996) critical review of the literature on the connection between the stature of the Irish, on the one hand, and their health and living standards, on the other. We find most of the anthropometric data sets used in this literature pertain to Irish emigrants rather than those who stayed behind. We therefore argue prison registers are a more appropriate source of anthropometric information. But results derived from these registers need to be handled with caution as prisoners are a selected population. We uncover the various observable selection biases inherent in prison data and track how they change across the second half of the nineteenth century. We find changes in selection into crime across time are more likely to have been due to institutional rather than economic factors.
