Abstract Possible selves are defined as “personalized representations of one’s self in future states” (Cross & Markus, 1991). Research has also found that thinking frequently about possible selves predicts lower well-being, whereas thinking clearly about possible selves is associated with higher well-being (McElwee & Haugh, 2010). However, possible selves differ across the lifespan (Hooker & Kaus, 1994; Cross & Markus, 1991) and life stages can impact exploration of possible identities (Arnett, 2000). Thus we hypothesize that the relationship between thought about possible selves and well-being differs across the lifespan. In a cross-sectional survey, 240 participants (age range: 18-92) reported on frequency and clarity of possible selves, as well as general self-clarity (Campbell et al., 1996). Results indicate curvilinear moderation by age of the link between possible self-clarity and well-being, with the association being stronger among midlife adults than among younger adults and older adults. Also, as clarity of feared possible selves increases, self-concept clarity decreases. Similarly, frequency of thinking about feared possible selves was negatively correlated with self-concept clarity. However, clarity and frequency of thought about hoped-for positive possible selves had no correlation with self-concept clarity.

Recent emergent research is seriously questioning whether parental strictness contributes to children’s psychosocial adjustment in all cultural contexts. We examined cross-generational differences in parental practices characterized by warmth and practices characterized by strictness, as well as the relationship between parenting styles (authoritative, indulgent, authoritarian, and neglectful) and psychosocial adjustment in adulthood. Parenting practices characterized by warmth (affection, reasoning, indifference, and detachment) and strictness (revoking privileges, verbal scolding, and physical punishment) were examined. Psychosocial adjustment was captured with multidimensional self-concept and well-being (life satisfaction and happiness). Participants were 871 individuals who were members of three generations of Spanish families: College students (G3), their parents (G2), and their grandparents (G1). Results showed two different cross-generational patterns in parenting practices, with an increased tendency toward parental warmth (parents use more affection and reasoning but less indifference across generations) and a decreased tendency toward parental strictness (parents use revoking privileges, verbal scolding, and physical punishment less across generations). Interestingly, despite cross-generational differences in parenting practices, a common pattern between parenting styles and psychosocial adjustment was found: indulgent parenting was related to equal or even better self-concept and well-being than authoritative parenting, whereas parenting characterized by non-warmth (authoritarian and neglectful) was related to poor scores.

BackgroundThe relationship between well-being and mental ill health is complex; people may experience very low levels of well-being even in the absence of overt mental health problems.AimsThis study tested the hypothesis that anxiety, depression and well-being have different causal determinants and psychological mediating mechanisms.MethodThe influence of causal and mediating factors on anxiety, depression and well-being were investigated in a cross-sectional online questionnaire survey hosted on a UK national broadcasting website.ResultsMultivariate conditional independence analysis of data from 27 397 participants revealed different association pathways for the two constructs. Anxiety and depression were associated with negative life events mediated by rumination; low levels of subjective well-being were associated with material deprivation and social isolation, mediated by adaptive coping style.ConclusionsOur findings support the ‘two continua’ model of the relationship between psychological well-being and mental health problems, with implications for both treatment and prevention.

The aim of this chapter is to analyze the psychological well-being of university students, their self-concept and certain behaviours and attitudes of violence in couple relationships by gender and cultural group (European vs. Amazigh) as well as to determine the relationship amongst the three constructs evaluated. For it, 100 university students of the University Campus of Melilla, Spain, participated in the research. The Psychological Well-Being Scale (PWBS), the Test of Self-Concept Form 5 (AF-5), and the Dating Violence Questionnaire (DVQ) were the instruments used for the data collection. Main results showed differences by gender on the Degree of distress experienced by the presence of violent behaviours and attitudes in couple relationships, the Academic/Professional Self-concept and Self-Esteem. Regarding cultural group, differences were showed on the Couple Relationships Scale of PWBS. In addition, different correlations were found. Finally, the need to address the elements analyzed at the university context is discussed.

PurposeThis paper aims to explore the psychological mechanism in the relationship between paternalistic leadership (PL) and employee well-being (EWB) in cross-cultural nonprofit organizations. It also aims to further promote the integration of research on PL and self-concept by examining the relationship between PL and collective self-concept (CSC).Design/methodology/approachData were collected on 72 supervisors and 233 expatriate Chinese teachers from 42 Confucius Institutes and 15 Confucius classrooms in Canada and the USA.FindingsPL has a significant effect on EWB. Benevolent and moral leadership are positively related to CSC, while authoritarian leadership is negatively related to CSC. CSC mediates the relationship between PL and EWB. Furthermore, employees’ cross-cultural adaptability positively moderates the relationship between CSC and EWB; the indirect effect between PL and EWB via CSC is stronger for employees with stronger cross-cultural adaptability.Originality/valueThis is the first study that has examined the psychological mechanism under which PL affects EWB in cross-cultural nonprofit organizations. It contributes to the integration of research on PL and CSC by examining its relationship for the first time. It provides important implications for improving the well-being of expatriate employees in cross-cultural organizations.

In order to get a deep understanding of the relationship between self concept and subjective well being of normal university students, improve the level of normal university students’ subjective well being, strengthen the normal university students’ education and training, this paper adopted the Tennessee self concept scale and Index of well being sc ale to test a random sample of 234 students in China West normal university. The results showed that normal university students have a clear self concept and are at a high level of subjective well being. In addition to self criticism, normal university stu dents’ various dimensions of self concept and subjective well being were significantly positively correlated. The psychological self, self identity and moral self factor included in Normal university students’ self concept have significant regression effec t with subjective well being.

 Los factores que influyen en los niveles de actividad física son muchos, sin embargo, es necesario identificar aquellos que pueden ser modificables, entre ellos están las variables sociocognitivas. El objetivo general de esta investigación fue analizar la relación entre el autoconcepto físico, motivación, autoeficacia y percepción de barreras para la actividad física, y el bienestar subjetivo con el nivel de actividad física en estudiantes universitarios. Se utilizó un diseño predictivo transversal y participaron 362 estudiantes de Educación Superior de una región del centro sur de Chile. Para responder a los objetivos se utilizó un Modelo de Ecuaciones Estructurales, específicamente el modelo Probit adecuado para regresiones ordinales. Los resultados mostraron que: (1) la autoeficacia para la práctica de actividad física, la falta de tiempo, falta de voluntad, falta de habilidad, el autoconcepto de condición física y el autoconcepto físico de fuerza predijeron significativamente el nivel de práctica de actividad física; (2) el nivel de actividad física media la relación entre las variables sociocognitivas y la afectividad positiva. Es posible concluir que las variables sociocognitivas influyen en los niveles de actividad física de estudiantes universitarios y esta última influye en su bienestar. Abstract: The factors that influence physical activity levels are many, however, it is necessary to identify those that can be modified, among them are the sociocognitive variables. The general objective of this research was to analyze the relationship between physical self-concept, motivation, self-efficacy and perception of barriers to physical activity, and subjective well-being with the level of physical activity in university students. A cross-sectional predictive design was used and 362 students of Higher Education from a region of southern central Chile participated. To respond to the objectives, a Model of Structural Equations was used, specifically the Probit model suitable for ordinal regressions. The results showed that: (1) self-efficacy for the practice of physical activity, lack of time, lack of will, lack of ability, self-concept of physical condition and physical self-concept of strength significantly predicted the level of practice of physical activity; (2) the level of physical activity mediates the relationship between sociocognitive variables and positive affectivity. It is possible to conclude that sociocognitive variables influence the levels of physical activity of university students and the latter influences their well-being.
