Oil and petroleum products transportation is characterized by a significant cost of electric power. Correct oil and petroleum products accounting and forecasting requires knowledge of many factors. The software for norms of electric power consumption analysis for the planned period was developed at the Ufa Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Based on the principles of the relational data model, a schematic diagram/arrangement for the main oil transportation objects was developed, which allows to hold the initial data and calculated parameters in a structured manner.

Abstract The solid-liquid mixing characteristics in a stirred tank with pitched blade impellers, dislocated impellers, and dislocated guide impellers were investigated through using CFD simulation. The effects of impeller speed, impeller type, aperture ratio, aperture length, solid particle diameter and initial solid holdup on the homogeneity degree in the solid-liquid mixing process were investigated. As expected, the solid particle suspension quality was increased with an increase in impeller speed. The dislocated impeller could reduce the accumulation of solid particles and improve the cloud height compared with pitched blade impeller under the same power consumption. The dislocated guide impeller could enhance the solid particles suspension quality on the basis of dislocated impeller, and the optimum aperture ratio and aperture length of dislocated guide impeller were 12.25% and 7 mm, respectively, in the solid-liquid mixing process. Smaller solid particle diameter and lower initial solid holdup led to higher homogeneity degree of solid-liquid mixing system. The dislocated guide impeller could increase solid particle integrated velocity and enhance turbulent intensity of solid-liquid two-phase compared with pitched blade impeller and dislocated impeller under the same power consumption.

Purpose To analyze the work principle and capacity of energy conversion in each segment of profile lines, the energy transfer from impeller to transmission medium is separated into head coefficient and load coefficient to analyze the energy transfer process. The concepts of airfoil lift coefficient and drag coefficient are used; the third manifestation of the Euler equations is used as well. Design/methodology/approach The numerical simulation of energy conversion mechanism based on load criteria of vane airfoil has been established in screw centrifugal pump to explain its energy conversion mechanism in an impeller. Upon this basis, the velocity and pressure along the entire blade are investigated through the numerical simulation of internal solid–liquid flow in the pump. The energy conversion process under load criteria in the blade airfoil has also been obtained. Findings The research suggests that the mathematical model of energy conversion mechanism based on the load criteria of the vane airfoil is reliable in the screw centrifugal pump. The screw centrifugal blade has twice or even several times the wrap angle than the ordinary centrifugal blade. It is a large wrap angle that forms the unique flow channel which lays the foundation for solid particles to pass smoothly and for soft energy conversion. At the same time, load distribution along the profile line on the long-screw centrifugal blade is an important factor affecting the energy conversion efficiency of the impeller. Originality/value The quantitative analysis method of energy in the screw centrifugal pump can help the pump designer improve certain features of the pump and shorten the research cycle.

The double-channel centrifugal pumps are widely used to transport the two-phase flow including big solid particles in industry and agriculture. However, the related design theory and the design method are immature by far. In practice, the revised design method based on the pure water medium is still the main method for the solid-liquid twophase double-channel pump. Therefore, it is very necessary to deeply study the flow characteristics on the condition of the pure water medium. In this paper, in order to study the flow characteristics inside a prototype double-channel centrifugal pump in the case that the delivered medium is the pure water, the SIMPLE algorithm, RNG κ-ε turbulence model, and frozen rotor method are employed to calculate the incompressible, viscous, three-dimensional internal flow. The calculation results display the variation characteristics of the internal flow field and the external performance. The results show that the predicted pump head drops with the increasing flow rate, which manifest that the pump model is of good operation stability at the whole range of working. At the design point, a strong and large vortex remain appears at the middle section of the double-channel impeller. The computational fluids dynamic technology is competent to assess the internal viscous flow inside a double-channel centrifugal pump.

In the design of slurry transport equipment used in the mining and dredging industries, the effects of solid particle velocity and concentration on hydraulic performance and wear need to be considered. Two ultrasonic techniques have been used to investigate slurry flows through a centrifugal pump casing: a local particle concentration measurement technique (Furlan et al., 2012) and a pulsed ultrasonic Doppler Velocimetry (PUDV) technique (Hanjiang, 2003, Garman, 2015). Local particle velocities and concentrations have been obtained in a flow of soda lime glass particles (diameter of 195 μm) and water through the casing of a centrifugal slurry pump operating close to the best efficiency point using the two ultrasound techniques. For the concentration measurements, the acoustic properties of slurry flows such as sonic velocity, backscatter, and attenuation are correlated to the volume fraction of solid particles. The algorithm utilizes measurements obtained from homogeneous vertical pipe flow fields as calibration data in order to obtain experimental concentration profiles in the non-homogenous flow regimes which are encountered in the pump casing. The PUDV technique correlates the Doppler shift in frequency associated with the movement of particles towards or away from the transducer. A two measurement (angle) technique is applied within the pump casing in order to account for the components of particle velocity which are orthogonal to the casing side wall. The techniques are utilized to obtain concentration and velocity profiles within the pump casing for overall average loop particle concentrations ranging from 7–11 % by volume. The experimental results are compared with the concentration and velocity fields that are predicted by in-house finite element computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes (Pagalthivarthi and Visintainer, 2009) which are used to predict wear in centrifugal slurry pump wet end components. Reasonable agreement is observed for both the concentration and velocity fields. Specifically, measurements indicate that there is a reduction of in-situ concentration and hence a corresponding radial acceleration of the particles with respect to the fluid occurring within the impeller which has also been predicted by computational predictions of flow through the impeller (Pagalthivarthi et al., 2013). Additionally, the prediction of the existence of secondary flow patterns by the casing computational code has been supported with the velocity measurements.

In this study, a non-stirred Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) testing device is developed to measure the flow field in a solid–liquid two-phase centrifugal pump. The pump casing and impeller are made of an organic glass material. Two types of impellers are designed considering different structure parameters. The performance curves of the pump are obtained for the different impellers at a rotating speed of 900 rpm with particle concentrations of 0%, 3%, 5%, and 10%. The flow fields for water and a solid–liquid two-phase mixture for the two impellers are measured utilizing the PIV system in a centrifugal rotating frame at the designed condition. The distribution of the particles, together with its influence on the performance of the different impellers, is analyzed. From a comparison of the relative velocity vector fields, the following can be concluded. First, the pump with a double arc-shaped profile demonstrated a more uniform and stable flow field distribution and higher performance than that with a single arc profile. Secondly, the solid particles were distributed mainly at the outlet of the impeller and volute wall, whereas the concentration distribution of the larger particles tended to match the pressure surface. This research can provide theoretical guidance for the design and optimization of two-phase flow centrifugal pumps.

To study the effect of fine particle size and volume concentration on the performance of solid-liquid two-phase centrifugal pump, the mixture multiphase flow model, RNG k-ε turbulence model, and SIMPLEC algorithm were used to simulate the two-phase flow of the centrifugal pump. The effects of particle size and volume concentration on internal pressure distribution, solid volume distribution, and external characteristics were analyzed. The results show that under the design discharge conditions, with the increase of particle size and volume concentration, the internal pressure of the flow field will decrease, and the volume fraction of solid phase in the impeller passage will also decrease as a whole. The solid particles gradually migrate from the suction surface to the pressure surface, and the particles in the volute channel are mainly concentrated in the flow channel near the outlet side of the volute. With the increase of particle size and volume concentration, the negative pressure value at the inlet of centrifugal pump increases, the total pressure difference at the inlet and outlet decreases, and the head and efficiency decrease accordingly.

Abstract THE process of softening rubber has received much less study than its importance deserves. Since the method of softening rubber by mastication was devised by Hancock, the greatest advances have been in the introduction of machines of greater mechanical efficiency and greater capacity. Prior to 1920 the effect of such variables as temperature was little understood. Long and inefficient periods of milling at high temperatures were common. In case milling did not produce the required plasticity, recourse was had to the addition of oils, resins, and other soft materials sometimes in considerable amounts. Such conditions have not yet entirely disappeared. Various methods have recently been proposed for plasticizing rubber in a more uniform manner and with less power consumption. Worthington and Hyde (24) softened rubber by heating it in a nonoxidizing atmosphere. Bradley and Ferrettie (1) concluded that the rubber should be water-soaked before it is heated and should be kept wet during the process. Tuley (21) patented the process of softening rubber by the addition of lead dioxide during the period of mastication, and Gerke (7) used a mixture of lead dioxide with an organic acid anhydride. Cruikshank (4) proposed the use of solvents containing alcohols of high molecular weight or sulfonated petroleum products as mastication assistants. According to Martin (10) the addition of nitrites to the latex before coagulation produces rubber of superior plasticity. Rubber softened by heating in an oxidizing atmosphere according to the method of Unger and Schidrowitz (22) has recently become a commercial product.

AbstractSolid-liquid suspension characteristics in a stirred tank with four pitched-blade impellers, circle package impellers, and punched circle package impellers were studied via computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. A classical Eulerian-Eulerian approach coupled with the standard k-ε turbulence model was adopted to simulate the solid-liquid two-phase turbulent flow. The effects of impeller speed, power consumption, impeller type, aperture size/ratio, solid particle diameter and liquid viscosity on the solid particle suspension quality were investigated. Results showed that the solid particle suspension quality was improved with an increment in the impeller speed. Punched circle package impeller could reduce the just suspension speed and improve the level of homogeneity for solid-liquid mixing process on the basis of four pitched-blade impeller and circle package impeller. The optimum aperture ratio and aperture diameter were 11.8% and 8 mm, respectively, for solid particles suspension process in this work. Smaller particle diameter led to smaller settling velocity and higher solid particle suspension quality. More viscous liquid was easier for sustaining the solid particles in suspension state. Meanwhile, punched circle package impeller can reduce the power consumption compared with four pitched-blade impeller and circle package impeller at the same impeller speed, and enhance the solid integrated velocity, turbulent kinetic energy, and turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate of solid-liquid mixing system at the same power consumption.
