Orientation: There is startlingly little economic research on the South African wildlife sector which contributes toward disputes regarding the economic contribution of the sector.Research purpose: The purpose of this article is to put into context the relative economic contribution of the wildlife ranching sector, as opposed to other land-use options in South Africa.Motivation for the study: Growth in the wildlife ranching sector at the cost of other traditional farming practices resulted in disagreements amongst various role players about the impact thereof on the national economy. The controversy can most probably be explained by different beliefs, coupled with the lack of a proper understanding and quantification of the wildlife ranching sector’s contribution toward the economy.Research methodology: The study employed a Social Accounting Matrix-based Leontief multiplier analysis for South Africa.Main findings: Results from the multiplier analysis revealed that developments within the wildlife ranching sector are likely to make a relatively more superior contribution towards the economy, especially when compared to similar land-use options such as extensive livestock production.Practical/managerial implications: It has been acknowledged by both academia and private sector that a major need exists for more research on the South African wildlife ranching industry, specifically looking at issues such as the industries, economic and social contributions, potentials and constraints. The research, therefore, contributes toward the depth of economic information and research regarding the South African wildlife sector.Contribution/value added: The research provides valuable information in dealing with the ‘popular belief’, especially amongst some of South Africa’s decision makers, namely, that growth in the wildlife ranching sector is not or does not have the ability to contribute significantly toward economic and socioeconomic factors.

Despite numerous researches on river channel incision, there are fewer studies on the impact of channel adjustments on floods. This paper aims to investigate channel adjustments and to analyse their impact on the frequency of floods by estimating the return period of the bankfull discharge of the Prahova River in the South-Eastern Subcarpathians (Romania). The study is based on the analysis of the maximum annual discharges and cross-section profiles of the Prahova River at Câmpina gauging station (1976–2015). To estimate the return period of the bankfull discharge, the log Pearson III distribution was used. Overall, the maximum depth and the cross-section area at the bankfull stage increased during the analysed period, indicating channel incision and lateral stability. The bankfull discharge of 1976 could be reached every year and the one of 2015 could occur almost every 5 years. Therefore, due to channel incision and increased channel capacity, overflowing the bankfull stage is a less frequent hazard on the Prahova River at Câmpina gauging station. River management appears to maintain this situation as no measure is taken to decrease channel incision.

Excessive fragmentation of agricultural enterprises is one of the most important barriers preventing the rational use of land in a large part of Poland. In particular, this problem affects the south-eastern regions of the country. Proper spatial distribution of farmland is one of the most important factors enabling economical effectiveness of agricultural enterprises. The purpose of the study was to create a spatial database which plotted the agricultural plots of a selected group of producers. The spatial database allowed determining the impact of the plots' location on the organization of field transport between the agricultural enterprise’s head office and its plots. The scope of study was a group of 5 vegetable producerslocated in Goczałkowice-Zdrój, in the commune of Goczałkowice-Zdrój, in the Pszczynapoviat, in the Śląskie Voivodeship.
