Effect of three different types of biochars on eco-physiological response of important agroforestry tree species under salt stress

ABSTRACT Salinity is prejudicial to plant development, causing different types of damage to species, or even between genotypes of the same species, with the effects being aggravated when combined with other types of stress, such as heat stress. The aim of this study was to evaluate the tolerance of cowpea genotypes (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.) to salt stress at different temperatures. Seeds of the Pujante, Epace 10 and Marataoã genotypes were placed on paper rolls (Germitest®) moistened with different salt concentrations of 0.0 (control), 1.5, 3.0, 4.5 and 6.0 dS m-1, and placed in a germination chamber (BOD) at temperatures of 20, 25, 30 and 35°C. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomised design, in a 3 × 4 × 5 scheme of subdivided plots, with four replications per treatment. The variables under analysis were germination percentage, first germination count, shoot and root length, and total seedling dry weight. At temperatures of 30 and 35°C, increases in the salt concentration were more damaging to germination in the Epace 10 and Pujante genotypes, while for the Marataoã genotype, damage occurred at the temperature of 20°C. At 25°C, germination and vigour in the genotypes were higher, with the Pujante genotype proving to be more tolerant to salt stress, whereas Epace 10 and Marataoã were more tolerant to high temperatures. Germination in the cowpea genotypes was more sensitive to salt stress when subjected to heat stress caused by the low temperature of 20°C or high temperature of 35°C.

In this study, we investigated the effects of artificial defoliation on the growth and physiological response of Lycium chinense Mill. to salt stress. Our results show that partial defoliation increases the plant relative growth rate, leaf water content and dry weight-based leaf Na+ content, and reduces the fresh weight-based leaf Na+ content under salt stress. In response to defoliation, the leaf Na+/Ca2+ and Na+/Mg2+ ratios were decreased, but the K+ content remained unchanged. The contents of ROS and MDA were decreased in defoliated plants. Net The photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), electron transport rate (ETR), actual photochemical quenching (?PSII) and photochemical quenching (qp) were enhanced by defoliation. Together, these findings indicate that partial defoliation mitigates the salt-induced growth inhibition and physiological damage in L. chinense.

Abstract The forest litter plays a significant role in forest ecosystems. The composition of the litter biota comprises micro- and mesofauna, and a great diversity of microorganisms, including unrecognized algae (eukaryotic representatives and Cyanoprokaryota). The aim of this work was to study the diversity of algae in the different types of forest litters and to clarify the relationship between the algae composition and the forest-forming tree species. Our results show that the pine forest litter is the most appropriate habitat for the development of green and yellow-green algae and that this litter type limits the variety of blue-green ones. The admixture of deciduous leaf litter to pine litter caused an increase in the species richness of blue-green algae and diatoms. The algae were unevenly distributed across the sub-horizons of pine litter. The highest species richness of algae was identified in the enzymatic sub-horizon of litter. The peculiarity of the composition of leaf litter algae was a significant variety of green, yellow-green and blue-green algae. The spatial organization of algae communities in the leaf litter was characterized by equal distribution of algae species in the litter-subhorizons.

This study quantifies the aboveground C storage of coffee agroecosystems (AESs) present in the Xalapa–Coatepec region of the state of Veracruz, one of the most important coffee producing regions in Mexico. We identified and determined the spatial distribution of five different types of coffee AESs. Then, through the point-centered quarter method, we measured canopy coverage, total height, diameter at breast height and density of tree species at 160 randomly selected sampling sites. Using allometric models, we estimated the aboveground biomass and the stored aboveground C by tree species and type of AES; and finally, we scaled up our results at the regional level. We found out that the coffee AESs with the greatest and the lowest potential for storing aboveground C are coffee (Co) + talltrees (tree stratum mainly composed of species taller than 15 m) and Co + AcaciaInga (tree stratum mainly composed by Acacia pennatula), with a carbon density as 73.27 Mg C ha − 1 and 38.47 Mg C ha − 1 respectively. The 91.2% of the total aboveground C in the studied region is stored by two coffee AES types: Co + talltrees and Co + Inga (tree stratum composed by Inga sp.). The aboveground C storage potential of all five coffee AESs in the central region of Veracruz is 2.43 million Mg C with an average carbon density of 55.12 Mg C ha − 1 . These results assert that coffee AESs should be considered important C sinks that contribute to the adaptation and mitigation of climate change.

We sowed seeds of Pinussylvestris L., Pinuscontorta Dougl, Piceaabies (L.) Karst., and Piceamariana (Mill.) B.S.P. at five different virgin peatland sites in northern Sweden. Seeds were sown in 1987, 1988, 1989, and 1990. The seeds were sown in three different types of microhabitat, viz Pleurozium, Sphagnumfuscum, and Sphagnumangustifolium. Germination and seedling mortality were monitored each year. Both germination and mortality were significantly affected by the micro-habitat. Sphagnumangustifolium microhabitats were most favourable and Pleurozium microhabitats were least favourable for germination of all tree species. In contrast, the mortality for all tree species was highest in Sphagnumangustifolium microhabitats and lowest in Pleurozium microhabitats. Lowest average mortality was found among the nonindigenous Pinuscontorta and Piceamariana. The coniferous tree species had a species-specific relationship with the microhabitat. Pinussylvestris seeds were the most able to germinate in the Pleurozium microhabitats, and seedling mortality was strongly affected by the microhabitat. Piceaabies was the least affected by the microhabitat, and seedling mortality was high irrespective of microhabitat.

This study was primarily focused on determining the availability of feeding niche of the little owl in University Campus. For this purpose, observations were made consecutively on the location of important sites in University Student’s Farm. This Farm is characterized by different types of tree species. Some of the important ones comprise Salmalia malabarica, Dalbergia sissoo, Cedrella toona, Terminalia arjuna and few others. The little owl mainly feeds on small insects and occasionally on very small mammals and perhaps on the small chicks. Small insects made the major portion of the diet of Athene noctua.
