Abstract We experimentally study a circuit quantum acoustodynamics system with a superconducting artificial atom coupled to both a two-dimensional surface acoustic wave resonator and a one-dimensional microwave transmission line. The strong coupling between the artificial atom and the acoustic wave resonator is confirmed by the observation of the vacuum Rabi splitting at the base temperature of dilution refrigerator. We show that the propagation of microwave photons in the microwave transmission line can be controlled by a few phonons in the acoustic wave resonator. Furthermore, we demonstrate the temperature effect on the measurements of the Rabi splitting and temperature induced transitions from high excited dressed states. We find that the spectrum structure of two-peak for the Rabi splitting could become into those of several peaks under some special experimental conditions, and gradually disappears with the increase of the environmental temperature T. The continuous quantum-to-classical crossover is observed around the crossover temperature T c, which is determined via the thermal fluctuation energy k B T and the characteristic energy level spacing of the coupled system. Experimental results agree well with the theoretical simulations via the master equation of the coupled system at different effective temperatures.

We present a new concept of the thermoelectric structure that generates microwave and terahertz signals when illuminated by femtosecond optical pulses. The structure consists of a series array of capacitively coupled thermocouples. The array acts as a hybrid type microwave transmission line with anomalous dispersion and phase velocity higher than the velocity of light. This allows for adding up the responces from all the thermocouples in phase. The array is easily integrable with microstrip transmission lines. Dispersion curves obtained from both the lumped network scheme and numerical simulations are presented. The connection of the thermocouples is a composite right/left-handed transmission line, which can receive terahertz radiation from the transmission line ports. The radiation of the photon to the surface of the thermocouple structure causes a voltage difference with the bandwidth of terahertz. We examined a lossy composite right/left-handed transmission line to extract the circuit elements. The calculated properties of the design are extracted by employing commercial software package CST STUDIO SUITE.

ABSTRACTWe report on fabrication and measurement of a surface acoustic wave resonator prepared on ∼10m thick GaN(0001) films. The films were grown by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy on a c-plane sapphire substrate. The surface morphology of the films were examined with scanning electron and atomic force microscopy. A metallic bilayer of Al/Ti was subsequently evaporated on the nitride film surface. Definition of the resonator interdigital transducers, designed for a wavelength of λ=7.76m, was accomplished with standard UV lithography and lift-off. S-parameter measurements showed a resonator center frequency f0=495MHz at room temperature, corresponding to a surface acoustic wave velocity of 3844m/s. The insertion loss at center frequency was measured at 8.2dB, and the loaded Q-factor was estimated at 2200. Finally, measurements of the resonator center frequency for temperatures in the range 25–155°C showed a temperature coefficient of -18ppm/°C. The intrinsic GaN SAW velocity and electromechanical coupling coefficient were estimated at νSAW=383 1m/s and K2=1.8±0.4·10−3.
