In more and more complicated urban building environment, a new construction method that metro engineering is constructed by large-diameter shield and shallow mining method can be regarded as a great attempt in China. By taking the Gaojiayuan station of Beijing metro line 14 as an engineering background, the main construction steps for the platform of the metro station built by a large-size shield with an outer diameter of 10 m and the Pile-Beam-Arch (PBA) method are introduced. Based on the soil-structure interaction theory, a two-dimensional finite element model is used to simulate the shield tunneling and the platform construction by the PBA method to enlarge the shield tunnel. The ground deformation and structural stress of the platform are predicted. The numerical results can be regarded as a valuable reference for the application of the new construction method in Beijing metro line 14.

This study demonstrates a three-dimensional numerical simulation of earth pressure balance (EPB) shield tunnelling using a coupled discrete element method (DEM) and a finite difference method (FDM). The analysis adopted the actual size of a spoke-type EPB shield tunnel boring machine (TBM) consisting of a cutter head with cutting tools, working chamber, screw conveyor, and shield. For the coupled model to reproduce the in situ ground condition, the ground formation was generated partially using the DEM (for the limited domain influenced by excavation), with the rest of the domain being composed of FDM grids. In the DEM domain, contact parameters of particles were calibrated via a series of large-scale triaxial test analyses. The model simulated tunnelling as the TBM operational conditions were controlled. The penetration rate and the rotational speed of the screw conveyor were automatically adjusted as the TBM advanced to prevent the generation of excessive or insufficient torque, thrust force, or chamber pressure. Accordingly, these parameters were maintained consistently around their set operational ranges during excavation. The simulation results show that the proposed numerical model based on DEM–FDM coupling could reasonably simulate EPB driving while considering the TBM operational conditions.

Constructing a shield tunnel that crosses under a river poses considerable safety risks, and risk assessment is essential for guaranteeing the safety of tunnel construction. This paper studies a risk assessment system for a shield tunnel crossing under a river. Risk identification is performed for the shield tunnel, and the risk factors and indicators are determined. The relationship between the two is determined preliminarily by numerical simulation, the numerical simulation results are verified by field measurements, and a sample set is established based on the numerical simulation results. Fuzzy comprehensive evaluation and a backpropagation neural network are then used to evaluate and analyze the risk level. Finally, the risk assessment system is used to evaluate the risk for Line 5 of the Hangzhou Metro in China. Based on the evaluation results, adjustments to the slurry strength, grouting pressure, and soil chamber pressure are proposed, and the risk is mitigated effectively.

We analyzed characteristics of soil disturbance by shield tunneling with numerical simulation. To provide technical support for the future urban shield tunnel construction. It shows practically significant in studying shield tunnel construction.

To identify shield grouting quality based on impact echo method, an impact echo test of segment-grouting (SG) test piece was carried out to explore effect of acoustic impedance of grouting layers and grouting defects on impact echo law. A finite element numerical simulation on the impact echo process was implemented. Test results and simulation results were compared. Results demonstrated that, under some working conditions, finite element simulation results and test results both agree with theoretical values. The acoustic impedance ratio of SG material influenced the echo characteristics significantly. But thickness frequency could not be detected under some working conditions because the reflected energy is weak. Frequency feature under grouting defects was more complicated than that under no grouting defects.

Against the background of shenyang subway shield tunnel construction, the method of numerical simulation methods are used to analyze the factors of surface subsidence caused by shield construction comprehensively, and the universal finite element program ABAQUS is used to establish mechanical model depended on comprehensive consideration the influence factors of soil warehouses pressure, seepage and groundwater. A dynamic finite element simulation of shield advance process and conclude the surface deformation rule of soil are studied.
