Education and Media Discourses

Over the past 30 years, a growing field of scholarship has explored the relationship between education and the media. Scholars within this field have explored representations of education, schooling, teachers’ work and students in print and other news media, utilizing approaches that include critical discourse analysis, news framing analysis and, more recently, corpus-assisted discourse analysis. The relationship between these representations, public understandings of education and education policy has also been explored in the research literature, with a focus on the complex interplay between media discourses and public policy around education. The emergence of social media and the engagement of both educators and members of the general public on social media around issues related to education has seen this relationship shift in the first two decades of the 21st century. This, along with the growth of computer-assisted research approaches (including corpus-assisted analysis and network analysis, for example) has brought new theoretical and methodological possibilities to bear on the field.

This study examines media discourses of the naturalized athletes of the South Korean men’s national ice hockey team. Building on the conceptual frameworks of imagined community, ethnic nationalism, and previous studies on athlete migration and naturalization, we further an understanding of the process of deconstruction and reconstruction of South Korean ethnic and national identity. We use Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis to explore how South Korean media legitimized the naturalization of foreign athletes without Korean ancestry and suggest three themes found from the discourses. First, the discourses highlighted the significance of the South Korean team’s Olympic success, which provided a legitimate reason for the recruitment of foreign athletes. Second, the naturalized athletes were described as “saviors” who possessed superior careers, physicality, and playing skills. Lastly, the media complimented the naturalized athletes’ acculturation to Korean culture by emphasizing their commitment to the nation. We argue that by forming and distributing discourses that favored the naturalization of athletes, Koreans have expanded the boundary of Koreanness. We discuss, then, the expansion of Koreanness in relation to the notion of flexible citizenship in the era of neoliberal globalization.


The present study analyzes the narratives by Russian bloggers on the 2008 South-Ossetia conflict. This analysis of political discourse is underpinned by the principles of cognitive linguistics, developed on the basis of bodily experience of human beings. The combination of different approaches leads to a more comprehensive analysis and concise interpretation of events taking place in society. This cognitive-discursive perspective differs from traditional studies of mass media narratives which mostly base on Discourse Analysis (DA) and/or Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), i.e., language in use is studied from the perspective of meaning on/ above the level of sentences and through the relationship between language and society, as well as language and power. Methodologically, this study was conducted on the basis of integrative speech analysis, critical discourse analysis, and cognitive linguistics. From the cognitive point of view, bloggers’ discourse is based on concepts evaluated positively (BENEFIT, FAIRNESS/HONORABLE CASE), negatively (CONQUER, PROBLEM, VANDALISM, NEGOTIATED MATCH), and neutrally (DEMONSTRATION, TEST). From the linguistic point of view, in their discourse, bloggers extensively use metaphors, which belong to the most effective ways of expressing opinions and are widely used by the media to create vivid images of the events described. A qualitative generalization of the data of content analysis proves that the attitude of Russian bloggers to the conflict is quite diverse, there is no consensus about how the war was fought, about its results, about the current situation and future prospects for the region.

The mass media fact report within social reality comes with a complexities of interest. As an institution which has the power to shape public opinion, the press also able to give  influence both positive and negative, depend on the interests represented. Including while  representing the image of women in politics through its news report. Through the news report, text media construct a reality of a women in politics image. In which this reality constructed by the media is not a value-free.This study analyses the media discourse of a woman politician recently elected as a Bupati (which has the same rank as a Mayor) of Bima District Indah Dhamayanti Putri in the local news media coverage Lombok Post and Suara NTB from the February to May 2016. Both newspaper are daily newspaper which contribute the largest circulation in the province of West Nusa Tenggara. Hence, the two media are the most accessed printed media in the province. How the reality of woman leadership in local scale constructed by this two dailies will certainly influence the view of the people , and the way people behave towards this leadersship. Moreover Indah Dhamayanti Putri is the first female leader in the province of West Nusa Tenggara.The news about Indah Dhamayanti Putri leadership analyzed in this study consist of her profile as the Bupati, her political activities, polocies and programs. The news analyzed using critical discourse analysis method from Norman Fairclough model, by analyzing the text in the macro-micro societal context. FOcus of the analysis are more on how language is formed and shaped from social relationships and a certain social context.  Fairclough divide discourse analysis in three dimensions, textual analysis, discourse practice and socio-cultural practices . From the research conducted, it appears that women politicians Indah Dhamayanti Putri are perceived in terms of stereotypes both in terms of physical appearance, figure or her role as wife and mother are still inherent in the discourse of textual reports of two mass media. Keywords: Representation women politician, image, discourse analysis

This article intends to reveal the power dimensions and ideological positions embedded in dominant media discourses. Informed by theories of media representation as well as those of colonialism and Orientalism, this article analyses eight articles from two British daily online news media sources, namely, The Guardian and The Telegraph. The methodological framework adopted draws on Fairclough's (1995) conception of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to examine textual features, and employs Bazzi's contextual analysis model with an emphasis on ideology. These methodologies are utilised in an effort to investigate the British media's representational and discursive strategies concerning a wave of stabbing incidents in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict during the six-month violence between October 2015 and March 2016. The results indicate that violent actions are framed in a binary fashion, between self and other, and that the discursive strategies employed position Palestinian subjects as unworthy victims or violent initiators, whereas Israelis were represented relatively positively, in order to inscribe the accepted values in British society and foreign policy. This article attempts to contribute to the discussion on the impact of media agencies embedded within a particular societal and political context, and comments upon their ability to foster and disseminate hegemonic ideologies, which in turn reinforce systemic power inequalities in times of conflict.

This article studies the media representations of Shenzhen’s global image by adopting the corpus-based critical discourse analysis. Previous studies mainly analyze the shaping, publicity and construction of Shenzhen’s image from the perspective of urban culture and development and news dissemination. However, media construction on the global image of Shenzhen is empirical and noticeable. The findings demonstrate favorable representations of Shenzhen’s image associated with technology powerhouse, manufacturing heartland, industrial boomtown, jewelry fair advantages and giant headquarters economy in general. Negative representations associated with Shenzhen Stock trading drop, landslide accident and Apple’s Foxconn problems are amplified in media discourses.

There is a scarcity of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) studies on the representation of social actors in news media, thus this study addressed this research gap by analysing the way news represented the French President Emmanuel Macron, regarding his controversial support of Samuel Paty, a history teacher in France who was murdered because he showed a cartoon of Prophet Muhammad in his class. This research aims to see the representation of Emmanuel Macron from the perspective of the French media, The Connexion France, which published their news in English language online to reach world-wide audience.  Four articles of the news were purposively selected for this CDA study, which were published from October 18 until November 1, 2020. The French President’s representation was analysed with the nomination and predication strategies.  Results showed that the Connexion France uses four nomination strategies to refer Emmanuel Macron. The professional anthroponyms refer to Emmanual Macron as “the President”, proper names as “Emmanuel Macron” to be the centre of the discourse, synecdoche as “Emmanuel Macron”, and deixis as “he” to avoid repetition the subject of the text. Two predication strategies were also used, the explicit predicate of how the President “has promised” action against Islamists and presupposition from the way the news linked pictures of boycotted French supermarket products with the President. This research provides a take on fresh news with CDA and can beneficial for the students who learn English language by showing how the media uses language for political figures.

This study adopts a Critical Discourse Analytical approach to investigate how a form of Iranian national(ist) identity is (re)constructed and (re)presented on a popular Facebook Page called Persian Gulf.It focuses on linguistic practices of the Iranian side of the debate over the name of this body of water. After briefly discussing some of the challenges of applying CDA to a participatory web platform e.g. Facebook, This paper explores the characteristics of the Persian identity discourse in the way that it is utilised to legitimize the name Persian Gulf vs. the claim to the name Arabian Gulf. The paper concludes that the emergent Persian national/ist identity discourse is strongly preoccupied with opposing a perceived cultural invasion of the Arabic Other in its emphatic defence of the name Persian Gulf but in the meantime it aspires to distinguish itself from the officially propagated Islamic identity. It is also shown that aspects pertaining to powerfulness, defiance and conflict are the main thrusts of the discursive representation of this Self-identity. <p>This study aims to investigate the language and the attitude of two well-known U.S. politicians, U.S. President Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders, towards media in their social media messages on Twitter microblogging site. The comparison and analyses are performed using Fairclough’s analytical framework of the socio-cultural approach of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA): text, discourse practice, and sociocultural practice. The data consists of 50 non repetitive recent media related tweets collected from personal accounts of Trump and Sanders. The findings indicate that Trump uses an informal, direct, and provoking communication style to construct and reinforce the concept of a homogeneous people and a homeland threatened by the dangerous and biased other (media) while Sanders having more democratic, liberal language, and focuses on more tangible, important social issues such as environment, education, and health problems as he himself prominences often. Moreover, Trump employs positive self-presentation and negative other presentation to further promote his agenda via social media. Bernie Sanders on the other hand criticize media for a set of different reasons. The researchers have explored the role of print media and social media to present the social, cultural and political ideologies through the support of liberal feminist women in Aurat March 2019&ndash;2020. Moreover, the researchers have identified the connection/s between the language and power in the construction of ideologies, specifically through the media (print and social media). Print media, specifically print social media, has a negative impact due to its lesser amount of validity and a positive keeping wide coverage. For this study, researchers took three articles from three different local newspapers about the specific topic &ldquo;Aurat March&rdquo;. These articles along with the posters (which were present in the specific articles) of Aurat March have been analyzed. The researchers collected the data through a qualitative approach and purposive sampling. The research is exploratory and multi-directional. Fairclough&rsquo;s model of critical discourse analysis is used for the analysis. The findings of the study have suggested that media discourse is intentionally crafted to create specific ideologies. As media has created and represented different socio-cultural ideologies in Aurat March. Media can play a positive and negative role in language and power. However, the impact of the media&rsquo;s ideologies is depending on the feedback of the concerned society.
