Computer Simulations in the Classroom

Computer simulations can be defined in three categories: computational modeling simulations, human-computer simulations, and computer-mediated simulations. These categories of simulations are defined primarily by the role computers take and by the role humans take in the implementation of the simulation. The literature on the use of simulations in the international studies classroom considers under what circumstances and in what ways the use of simulations creates pedagogical benefits when compared with other teaching methods. But another issue to consider is under what circumstances and in what ways the use of computers can add (or subtract) pedagogical value when compared to other methods for implementing simulations. There are six alleged benefits of using simulation: encouraging cognitive and affective learning, enhancing student motivation, creating opportunities for longer-term learning, increasing personal efficiency, and promoting student-teacher relations. Moreover, in regard to the use of computer simulations, there are a set of good practices to consider. The first good practice emerges out of a realization of the unequal level of access to technology. The second good practice emerges from a clear understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of a computer-assisted simulation. The final and perhaps most fundamental good practice emerges from the idea that computers and technology more generally are not ends in themselves, but a means to help instructors reach a set of pedagogical goals.

It includes the implications of accepted CALL and computer-assisted second-language acquisition (CASLA) principles for improving instruction. It blends studies of thorough research with appropriate, good practice. It suggests how to build effective flipped learning programs and the questions to ask before designing or using CALL. It suggests pedagogical implications and areas for fruitful research into the use of richer CALL applications. Using accepted CALL principles, it provides a practical model for comparing and evaluating the relative effectiveness of CALL and Computer-Mediated Communications-enhanced language learning versus traditional printed texts and simple audio.

Nuclei instance segmentation can be considered as a key point in the computer-mediated analysis of histological fluorescence-stained (FS) images. Many computer-assisted approaches have been proposed for this task, and among them, supervised deep learning (DL) methods deliver the best performances. An important criterion that can affect the DL-based nuclei instance segmentation performance of FS images is the utilised image bit depth, but to our knowledge, no study has been conducted so far to investigate this impact. In this work, we released a fully annotated FS histological image dataset of nuclei at different image magnifications and from five different mouse organs. Moreover, by different pre-processing techniques and using one of the state-of-the-art DL-based methods, we investigated the impact of image bit depth (i.e., eight bits vs. sixteen bits) on the nuclei instance segmentation performance. The results obtained from our dataset and another publicly available dataset showed very competitive nuclei instance segmentation performances for the models trained with 8 bit and 16 bit images. This suggested that processing 8 bit images is sufficient for nuclei instance segmentation of FS images in most cases. The dataset including the raw image patches, as well as the corresponding segmentation masks is publicly available in the published GitHub repository.

Online language learning (OLL) can take place in Web-facilitated, hybrid, or fully virtual classes. These formats are beginning to attract serious attention from the language profession and, in particular, the field of computer-assisted language learning (CALL). This article traces recent studies of online learning and then focuses in on its application to language learning through tutorial CALL, social computing, and games for language learning. I strive to show that tutorial CALL and computer-mediated communication can complement each other in the service of modern language instruction, along with the inclusion of language games. Although assessment studies of OLL remain sparse, the evidence is steadily mounting that shows that these new formats can provide learning environments conducive to successful second language development when properly integrated into the curriculum.

Purpose. The purpose of this article is to illustrate the application of conjoint analysis, a consumer research technique, using data from a survey of parents' preferences for prevention programs. Design. This study utilized a one-time, cross-sectional telephone survey. Setting. Data were collected from subjects living in economically disadvantaged rural midwestern counties. Subjects. Subjects were 202 randomly selected parents with préadolescents who indicated interest in family-focused prevention programs. Measures. Conjoint analysis software was employed in computer-assisted telephone interviews to evaluate relative preferences for 39 individual features of family-focused prevention programs falling under 11 categories (e.g., program meeting time, facilitator background). The software also guided computer simulations of parent choices among four types of programs. Results. Findings indicated that meeting time was the most important category of program features. Strongly preferred individual features included meetings scheduled on weekday evenings, instruction by child development specialists, and programs based on extensive research. Two multiple-session programs evaluated via computer simulations incorporated several preferred features and received higher ratings than did single-session programs. Estimated variance z-tests indicated limited differences in perceived importance of program feature categories across sociodemographic subgroups. Conclusions. Findings highlight a) differences in the relative value parents place on various features of prevention programs in the surveyed population and b) the importance of practical aspects of program delivery.

<span class="fontstyle0">At the elementary school level, sains learning still monotonous and<br />uninteresting because elementary school system with classroom teachers to make<br />the teachers have difficulty in using the right strategy. Teachers are required to<br />achieve the target material that is quite a lot and should be comleted in each<br />semester.This situation resulted in the lack of attention of student in the process of<br />learning activities so that a low student motivation. Under these conditions, the<br />purpose of this research is to improve students motivation through quantum<br />teaching method of learning process in the fourth grade students of SDN 02 Wates<br />Distric jenangan, Ponorogo.This research is a classroom action research (PTK),<br />which consists of the first cycle and the second cycle. The study subjects were<br />students of class 4 SDN 02 Wates wich consist 11 students. Collecting data in this<br />study using a questionnaire to determine students motivation, and the observation<br />sheet in the form of check list to determine the activity of students. Before held<br />research student motivation is low. Then after research showed that motivation of<br />students of cycle 1 45,5% and cycle II 82% increased 36,5%. Interpretation of<br />student learning to learning in sycle 1 is 36% and cycle II increased to 82%.<br />Student activity in I cycle was 27,3% and in the II cycle increased to 81,8%. The<br />result showed that the use of quantum teaching methods can improve students<br />motivation in learning sains SDN 02 wates.<br /><br /></span>

In education, it is important to have good communication and interaction between educators and learners to promote a conducive learning environment. However, this is rather difficult for the children with motor impairments, such as children with Cerebral Palsy and Autism. Their learning problems arise due to their motor impairment coupled with speech and intellectual impairments. As a result, children with motor disabilities require more time and attention in learning. To assist the children's learning, this chapter proposes an affective computer-mediated learning model which adapts to learners' emotions where it has an educator representation (i.e. a virtual tutor) to deliver the learning materials and interact with a child in one-to-one learning. The virtual tutor communicates with the child by responding to his/her facial expressions. Post-intervention experiments were carried out to evaluate the performance of the affective computer-mediated learning model. The overall results showed that the proposed affective learning model is able to assist the children's learning.

<p>In order to develop effective teaching methods and computer-assisted language teaching systems for learners of English as a foreign language who need to study the basic linguistic competences for writing, pronunciation, reading, and listening, it is necessary to first investigate which vocabulary and grammar they have or have not yet learned. Identifying such vocabulary and grammar requires a learner corpus for analyzing the accuracy and fluency of learners’ linguistic competences. However, it is difficult to use previous learner corpora for this purpose because they have not compiled all the types of linguistic data that we need. Therefore, this study aimed to solve this problem by designing and developing a new learner corpus that compiles linguistic data regarding the accuracy and fluency of the four basic linguistic competences of writing, pronunciation, reading, and listening. The reliability and validity of the learner corpus were partially confirmed, and practical application of the learner corpus is reported here as case studies.</p>
