Abstract A field study was conducted at the Macon Ridge Branch, Northeast Research Station, located near Winnsboro (Franklin Parish), Louisiana, to evaluate the efficacy of several B. thuringiensis insecticides for soybean looper control. Test plots were 50 ft long by 5 rows with a 40 inch row spacing and were arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Insecticides were applied with a tractor and compressed air sprayer calibrated to deliver 10 gpa at 38 psi through TX8 hollow cone nozzles (2 per row). Insecticide treatments were applied to soybeans in the R5 stage of growth (beginning seed) on 25 Aug. Posttreatment counts, consisting of 25 sweeps per plot, were taken with a 15 inch diameter muslin net at 2, 5, and 7 DAT. No rainfall occurred and the plots were not irrigated during the experimental period. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance followed by means separation according to DMRT.

Abstract ‘Atlantic’ potatoes were planted in early Mar for Tests 1 and 2 near Elizabeth City, N.C. on 42 inch centers. Plots in Test 1 were 14 ft long and in Test 2 20 ft long, with single row spacing replicated 4 times in a randomized complete block design. Alleys of 5 ft were used between replicates within rows. Treatments in Test 1 and Test 2 were applied with a CO2 pressurized backpack sprayer with a single hollow cone nozzle (18X) operated at 60 psi to deliver 54.5 gal/acre. In Test 1 all treatments were applied on 5, 11 and 18 May. All treatments were applied to Test 2 on 5 May, with the exception of the 1/6 lb rate of Trigard 75WP in combination with Trigard 75WP at 1/3 lb rate which received the combination low rate (1/6 lb) 6 days later. On 11 May applications were applied to all treatments except for Trigard 75WP at the 1/3 lb, 2/3 lb (egg only) and Trigard 75WP 1/3 lb (egg only) plus Trigard 75WP at the 1/6 lb rate. At this time the low rate of the combination Trigard 75WP 1/6 lb rate was applied. Imidan 50WP at 2 lbs and Imidan 50WP at 2 lbs plus Butacide 8EC at 0.5 lbs was applied on 5, 11 and 18 May. Test 1 and Test 2 counts of CPB on 3/hill plots were made 11 and 18 May. Small larvae were assumed to be first and second instar, and large larvae, third and fourth instar. Visual CPB damage ratings were made 18 May and 15 Jun. Visual ECB ratings were made and potatoes harvested and yields recorded 15 Jun.

Abstract Trials were conducted on spring-transplanted (13 May) broccoli (cv. Green Comet) at the Horticulture Field Research Center in Ft. Collins, CO. Individual plots consisted 20 ft long single rows with 15-in in-row spacing, arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Insecticide applications were made 3 Jun and 21 Jun using a CO2 compressed air sprayer delivering 15 gpa at 30 psi in two passes directed along the sides of the planting. An organosilicant spreader (Kinetic, 6 fl oz/A) was added to all treatments. Evaluations were made by visual observations of flea beetles on six plants/plot.

Abstract Potatoes were planted on 8 April at the Eastern Shore Agricultural Research and Extension Center, Painter, VA. Each plot consisted of six 30 ft long rows on 3 ft row spacing, replicated 4 times in a randomized, complete block design. Sprays were applied using either a tractor-mounted sprayer or a 3-hollow cone nozzle boom backpack sprayer if the ground was too wet for the tractor. Sprays were applied in 40 gal/acre water. Spray dates are indicated in the tables. The entire test was sprayed out on 20 Jun with Vydate L at 0.5 lb (AI)/acre and Furadan 4F at 1.0 lb (AI)/acre to control first generation CPB adults. Evaluation criteria consisted of weekly counts of all CPB life stages present on 10 randomly chosen plants/plot, and the first sprays were applied at peak CPB egg hatch. Percent defoliation for each plot was rated on 20 Jun, and the center two rows of each plot were harvested and graded on 1 Jul to determine yields.

Abstract Two field experiments were conducted to evaluate control of soybean looper and beet armyworm on soybean with several insecticides. In Test 1, insecticides were applied to plots measuring 15.2 m long × 8 rows (0.5 m spacing) located at the Northeast Research Station near St. Joseph (Tensas Parish), LA. Plots were arranged in a RCBD with 4 replication blocks. Insecticides were applied with a tractor and compressed air sprayer calibrated to deliver 93.5 liters/ha at 3.8 kg/cm2 through TX12 hollow cone nozzles (2 per row). Insecticides were applied on 24 Aug to ‘Davis’ soybeans in the R5 growth stage. In Test 2, experimental design, number of replications, nozzle size and type, and spray volume per hectare were identical to Test 1. Plots that measured 12.2 m long by 4 rows (1 m spacing) were located at the Macon Ridge Research Station near Winnsboro (Franklin Parish), LA. Sprayer pressure was 2.8 kg/cm2. Insecticides were applied on 25 Aug to ‘Buckshot 723’ soybeans in the R3 growth stage. Posttreatment samples consisted of one set of 25 sweeps per plot (0.38 m diam muslin net), taken 2 and 6 DAT, or 2 and 7 DAT in Tests 1 or 2, respectively. Precipitation did not occur throughout the duration of both tests and plots were not irrigated. Both test areas were treated with methyl parathion before the experiments. Test 1 was treated with 0.56 kg (AI)/ha 2 wk before experimental treatments were applied and Test 2 was treated with 0.28 kg (AI)/ha 3 wk before experimental treatments were applied.

Abstract The efficacy of several experimental insecticides that consist of pyrrole or avermectin chemistry, or exhibit insect growth regulator activity were evaluated against the soybean looper (SBL) on soybean in a small plot insecticide screening trial at the Macon Ridge Branch of the Northeast Research Station near Winnsboro, Louisiana. Activity of these materials was compared to that of the standard recommended insecticide Larvin at 0.6 lb (AI)/acre. Plots measured 50 ft by 5 rows (40 inch spacing) and were arranged in a RCB with 4 replications. Insecticides were applied on 23 Aug (R5, beginning seed stage) with a tractor and compressed air sprayer calibrated to deliver 10 gpa at 38 psi through TX8 hollow cone nozzles. Treatments were evaluated using 25 sweeps (15 inch diameter sweep net) per plot at 2, 5, and 7 DAT. No precipitation occurred throughout the duration of this experiment.

Admire 2F was applied in furrow preplanting using a single hollow cone nozzle boom backpack sprayer. Foliar sprays were applied on the dates indicated in the table using a 3 hollow cone nozzle boom backpack sprayer delivering 60 gal water/acre at 40 psi. On 21 and 23 Jun, the entire test was sprayed out with Vydate L at 0.50 lb(AI)/acre and Furadan 4F at 1.00 lb (AI)/acre to control first generation CPB adults. Evaluation criteria and spray decisions were based on weekly counts of all CPB life stages present on 10 random stems/plot. Sprays were applied if the following thresholds were exceeded: 4 small larvae, 1.5 large larvae, or 0.5 adults/stem. Percent defoliation for each plot was rated on 16 Jun and both rows of each plot were harvested and graded on 20 Jul to determine yields.

Abstract Insecticide efficacy against soybean looper was evaluated at the Macon Ridge Branch of the Northeast Research Station. Plots consisted of 4 rows (40 inch centers) × 50 ft, planted 3 Jun. Treatments in both tests were arranged in a RCB with 4 replications. Insecticides were applied on 23 Aug with a tractor-mounted boom and compressed air system calibrated to deliver 10 gal total spray/acre through Teejet X-8 hollow cone nozzles (2/row) at 38 psi. Treatments were evaluated at 3 and 7 DAT using two 25-sweep samples/plot with a standard 15 inch diameter sweep net. Rows 2 and 3 were sampled 3 DAT and rows 4 and 5 were sampled 7 DAT. No rainfall occurred during the test.

Abstract Snap beans were planted on 11 May at the Eastern Shore Agricultural Research and Extension Center, Painter, VA. Each plot consisted of two 25 ft rows planted on 3 ft row spacing and replicated four times in a randomized, complete block design. An untreated guard row separated each plot. Payload 15G treatments were applied pre planting in furrow using a hand-held shaker. Foliar sprays were applied with a 3 hollow cone nozzle boom backpack sprayer delivering 60 gal water/acre at 40 psi. Evaluation criteria consisted of counts of nymph and adult thrips on 10 trifoliate leaves/plot on the dates indicated in the table. The leaves were washed in soapy water, filtered through a Buchner funnel, and the thrips counted under a binocular dissecting microscope. A visual count of the number of PLH nymphs on 10 trifoliate leaves/plot was taken on 6 Jul. The first foliar sprays were applied on 8 Jun at prebloom and subsequent sprays were applied based on increasing thrips counts on the dates indicated in the table. When the Payload treatments required a foliar spray, they were treated with Orthene 75S at 0.50 lb (AI)/acre.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the phytomorphological parameters of soybean in a crop-livestock system inoculated with Azospirillum brasilense. The experiment was conducted in Santa Maria, Brazil, for two agricultural years (2 Paper extracted from the doctoral thesis of the first author. 012/2013 and 2013/2014) in a randomized complete block design with three replications. In the winter, the black oat and ryegrass pasture was managed with sheep under different grazing systems: (I) - a conventional grazing (CG) system, where the animals remained in the pasture throughout the experimental period without any pasture height control; (II, III, and IV) - systems with post-grazing pasture heights of 10, 20, and 30 cm, respectively; and (NG) - one control without grazing. All treatments received two nitrogen doses (50 and 100 kg ha-1) and inoculation or no inoculation (A. brasilense). The soybean cultivar BMX Potência RR was sown using no-tillage on 16 November 2012 and 1 December 2013. In each plot, seven rows of plants with spacing of 0.45 m were used, and in four rows, the seeds were inoculated with the bacterium A. brasilense. The phytomorphological variables and grain productivity were evaluated. In a croplivestock system, soybean has better productivity when established on black oat and ryegrass pasture managed with post-grazing pasture heights of between 20 and 30 cm. Areas under conventional grazing in the winter led to smaller soybean plants with lower first and last pod heights. Inoculation with A. brasilense should not be used alone in soybean cultivation.

Yam (Dioscorea spp.) is a valuable food security crop in West Africa, where 92% of the world production occurs. The availability of quality seed tubers for increased productivity is a major challenge. In this study, minitubers weighing 1, 3, and 5 g produced from virus-free single-node vine cuttings of two improved yam varieties (Asiedu and Kpamyo) growing in an aeroponics system were assessed for suitability in seed production at a population of 100,000 plants ha−1. A 3 × 2 factorial experiment with randomized complete block design and three replications was set up during the cropping seasons of 2017 to 2019 at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture Research Station in Kubwa, Abuja, Nigeria. Results showed field establishments of 87%–97.8%. Yields differed with minituber size, variety, and cropping season; the highest was 31.2 t ha−1 in 2019 and the lowest, 10 t ha−1 in 2018 from 5 and 1 g Kpamyo minitubers, respectively. The estimated number of tubers produced per hectare by 1, 3, and 5 g minitubers was 101,296, 112,592, and 130,555, with mean weights per stand of 159.2, 187.3, and 249.4 g, respectively. We recommend using less than 6 g minitubers for seed yam production due to their high multiplication rates.
