Abstract Background The type of content that influences plastic and reconstructive surgery (PRS) residency program selection and attracts applicants is everchanging and not clearly understood. Further, the COVID-19 pandemic had a major impact on residency selection that is undetermined. Objectives The purpose of this study was to determine to what degree and the type of PRS SM content that drives prospective applicants’ interest of a residency program, especially in the context of COVID-19. Methods Prospective PRS residency applicants were surveyed anonymously. Results An average of 60% of respondents reported that PRS social media (SM) content influenced their perception of a program. Fifty-eight percent reported that resident lifestyle content made them gain interest in a program. Separately, 32% reported that resident lifestyle content influenced them to rank a program higher. Seventy-two percent of respondents claimed SM content did not make them lose interest in a program. Rarely posting, outdated content, and lack of engagement were cited as factors for loss of interest in a program. A majority of respondents (53%) reported wanting to see more resident life and culture content on SM. Of the existing PRS SM content, respondents were most interested in resident lifestyle, followed by clinical and program-specific content. Conclusions The COVID-19 pandemic amplified the importance of SM PRS residency selection. Resident lifestyle content was consistently indicated as more likely to make respondents gain interest in a program, rank a program higher, and as the most desired content. PRS programs will benefit from highlighting resident camaraderie, quality of life, hobbies, and lifestyle to attract applicants.

There is a growing body of literature exploring the general population’s use of social media for assistance in dealing with stigmatized health issues. This study presents novel research examining the relationship between social media use and young adults. It utilizes a therapeutic affordance (TA) framework. Quantitative results from this study are complemented by qualitative data. The relationships between distinct social media and their TA (a–b) are presented to highlight their potential to impact positively on social and emotional well-being outcomes. Evidence includes broad support for “connection,” “narration,” and “collaboration” TAs in this context and the relationship between the use of distinct social media and perceived quality of life (QOL) outcomes (a–c). TA provides an appropriate and valuable theoretical framework which is useful for the development of an evidence-base from the analysis of young adult’s social media usage. An analysis of the association between social media and their QOL outcomes is presented according to the TA relationship pathway (a–c–b). The adoption of a TA framework enables a nuanced analysis of significant associations between specific social media, TA, and improved QOL outcomes. This study demonstrates the significant association between social media and perceived QOL outcomes in young adults.

Entrepreneurship often becomes an alternative profession, while in fact, being an entrepreneur is a strategic choice which is ideally based on strong determination and belief that it is able to change the quality of life. Sandiaga Uno used entrepreneurship narration during the 2019 presidential election campaign in his social media in order to influence the youth. The present study aimed to explore Sandiaga Uno’s entrepreneurship narration on Instagram and to identify the narration in influencing young people during the 2019 presidential election campaign. This study was categorized as qualitative research with thematic analysis. The result of the study found that Uno’s campaign narration focused more on hopes. His narration of entrepreneurship focused on motivating the Millenials without explaining further about the risk of being an entrepreneur and how to fund and maintain a business. Uno utilizes his background as an entrepreneur by motivating his campaign. Uno also invited celebrities and several Actors who have businesses to motivate young people to become entrepreneurs. Risk management needed in an entrepreneur because many entrepreneurs are not prepared to deal with risk so the business that was built cannot last. Likewise, there are still many entrepreneurs who cannot make the most of existing technology to develop its business because of its capacity.

BACKGROUND Monitoring social media has been shown to be a useful mean to capture patients’ opinions and feelings about medical issues, ranging from diseases to treatments. Health-related quality of life is a useful indicator of overall patients’ health that can be captured online. OBJECTIVE This study aims to describe a Social Media Listening system which is able to detect any impact of diseases or treatments on health-related quality of life as reported in social media and forum messages written by patients. METHODS Using a web crawler, 19 health-related forums in France were harvested and messages relating a patient’s experience with a disease or a treatment were specifically collected. The algorithm was based on the two clinically validated questionnaires SF-36 and EQ-5D. Models were trained using cross-validation (a machine learning technique which obtains the best combination between different data samples) and hyperparameter optimization. Over-sampling was used to increase the infrequent dimension: after annotation, SMOTE was used to balance the proportion of the dimension among messages. RESULTS The training set was composed of 1400 messages, randomly taken from a 20 000 batch of health-related messages coming from forums. The algorithm was able to detect a general impact on health-related quality of life (sensitivity of 0.83 and specificity of 0.74), a physical impact (0.67 and 0.76), a psychic impact (0.82 and 0.60), an activity-related impact (0.73 and 0.78), a relational impact (0.73 and 0.70) and a financial impact (0.79 and 0.74). CONCLUSIONS Real-time assessment of patients’ health-related quality of life through the use of Social Media Listening is useful to a patient-centered medical care. Social media as a source of Real World Data are a complementary point of vue to understand patients’ concerns, unmet needs and how diseases and treatments can be a burden in their daily lives. In Indonesia, the use of social media has been increased. Many factors are related to support the use of social media. This research aims to prove the affects between quality of life, social exchange, and technology acceptance model, which is based on previous research by adding privacy concern as moderating variable. This research conducted by distributing online questionnaires to the citizen that using social media in Indonesia. This research used Structural Equation Modeling as analysis method with software WarpPLS 5.0 as statistic tools. Data were collected from online questionnaires and the total of sample are 440 respondents. The result for this research shows that quality of life affects social exchange, which also affects to technology acceptance model and results to actual use of social media while the variable of privacy concern doesn't prove as moderating variable. As the result of the study, researchers suggest to the organizations that provide social media to pay attention to quality of life that will motivate someone to using social media.

Background Gastrointestinal (GI) discomfort is prevalent and known to be associated with impaired quality of life. Real-world information on factors of GI discomfort and solutions used by people is, however, limited. Social media, including online forums, have been considered a new source of information to examine the health of populations in real-life settings. Objective The aims of this retrospective infodemiology study are to identify discussion topics, characterize users, and identify perceived determinants of GI discomfort in web-based messages posted by users of French social media. Methods Messages related to GI discomfort posted between January 2003 and August 2018 were extracted from 14 French-speaking general and specialized publicly available online forums. Extracted messages were cleaned and deidentified. Relevant medical concepts were determined on the basis of the Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities and vernacular terms. The identification of discussion topics was carried out by using a correlated topic model on the basis of the latent Dirichlet allocation. A nonsupervised clustering algorithm was applied to cluster forum users according to the reported symptoms of GI discomfort, discussion topics, and activity on online forums. Users’ age and gender were determined by linear regression and application of a support vector machine, respectively, to characterize the identified clusters according to demographic parameters. Perceived factors of GI discomfort were classified by a combined method on the basis of syntactic analysis to identify messages with causality terms and a second topic modeling in a relevant segment of phrases. Results A total of 198,866 messages associated with GI discomfort were included in the analysis corpus after extraction and cleaning. These messages were posted by 36,989 separate web users, most of them being women younger than 40 years. Everyday life, diet, digestion, abdominal pain, impact on the quality of life, and tips to manage stress were among the most discussed topics. Segmentation of users identified 5 clusters corresponding to chronic and acute GI concerns. Diet topic was associated with each cluster, and stress was strongly associated with abdominal pain. Psychological factors, food, and allergens were perceived as the main causes of GI discomfort by web users. Conclusions GI discomfort is actively discussed by web users. This study reveals a complex relationship between food, stress, and GI discomfort. Our approach has shown that identifying web-based discussion topics associated with GI discomfort and its perceived factors is feasible and can serve as a complementary source of real-world evidence for caregivers.

Over the past decade, there has been a rapid growth of social media. Much of the problem lies with the new potential for constant social comparisons. Social media also adds a new layer of interaction that can occur anywhere, at any time, with anyone. This allows for a higher quantity of relationships, but strips the depth of these relationships. Does increased social media use affect quality of life? I hypothesize that the more social media sites a respondent is a member or regular user of, the more time he or she reports feeling depressed or lonely. I used a sample of 628 respondents as part of in-person interviews conducted by the 2016 General Social Survey. The results found that overall about 51 percent of the people claimed to feel depressed or lonely none of the time. Meaning that about half of respondents do feel depressed or lonely at least some of the time. The most statistically significant finding revealed that the higher ones income, the less one reports feeling depressed or lonely. However, the hypothesis must be rejected because there is no statistical significance between social media usage and quality of life. Social media site usage does not result in increased feelings of depression or loneliness. Based on the income results, does money buy happiness? Those of lower socio-economic class may not have access to proper medical care and therefore do not get adequate treatment for mental illnesses. Structural forces might be having a direct impact.
