The methodology of polarization time-resolved fluorometry and interpretation of its results are outlined at a general level, and the measurement on and use of facilities of the Edinburgh Instruments Model 299T apparatus are discussed in detail. The dynamics of conformational changes in chains of poly(methacrylic acid) containing covalently bonded dansyl labels are studied in aqueous solutions at various pH. It is shown that at pH > 6, the shorter effective rational correlation time τr < 2 ns corresponds to the rotation of the free dansyl label about bonds by which it is attached to the polymeric chain; at pH < 4 the longer effective rational correlation time τr = 20-26 ns corresponds to the rotation of the compact spherical formation constituted by a part of the collapsed polymeric chain in which the label is fixed and whose relative molecular mass is approx. 15 000-20 000.

The proton magnetic resonance (1H nmr) spectrum at 400 MHz of prostacyclin at pH 10.4 in glycine buffer has been completely analyzed utilizing homonuclear double resonance, inversion recovery, and difference nOe experiments. The spectral analysis shows that the two protons at C-4 are non-equivalent even though they are removed from the asymmetric centres at C-8 and C-9 by five bonds. The difference nOe measurements verify the configuration at C-5.Proton longitudinal relaxation times (T1) were measured at 400 and 200 MHz. From the T1 frequency dependence, effective rotational correlation times ranging from 2.3 × 10−10 to 3.0 × 10−10 s were calculated for H-5, H-9, H-11, and H-15. This indicates that the portion of the molecule encompassed by these protons has a longer correlation time than is observed for the C-2 and the C-17 to C-19 protons, for which the average correlation time is 1.2 × 10−10 s. Hence the aliphatic side chains have more segmental motion.

In this paper, bifurcations of a nonlinear two-degree-of-freedom system subjected to a narrow-band stochastic excitation are investigated. Under the assumption that the correlation time greatly exceeds the relaxation time, a quasi-static approach combined with averaging method is adopted to obtain the bifurcation equations, and the singularity theory is applied to analyze the bifurcations. It is demonstrated that bifurcation patterns jump from one to another due to the influence of a random parameter. The probabilities of the jumping bifurcation patterns are given.

This study attempts to derive the statistics of temperature and velocity fields of laminar natural convection in a heated vertical channel with random wall temperature. The wall temperature is expressed as a random function with respect to time, or a random process. First, analytical solutions of the transient temperature and flow velocity fields for an arbitrary temporal variation in the channel wall temperature are obtained by the integral transform and convolution theorem. Second, the autocorrelations of the temperature and velocity are formed from the solutions, assuming a stationarity in time. The mean square values of temperature and velocity are computed under the condition that the fluctuation in the channel wall temperature can be considered as white noise or a stationary Markov process. Numerical results demonstrate that a decrease in the Prandtl number or an increase in the correlation time of the random process increases the level of mean square velocity but does not change its spatial distribution tendency, which is a bell-shaped profile with a peak at a certain horizontal distance from the channel wall. The peak position is not substantially affected by the Prandtl number or the correlation time.
