Abstract Technology has massive potential to improve the lives of older adults in terms of their health, wellbeing, quality of life, and independence. However, benefits will not be realized unless these technologies are designed considering the needs, abilities, and attitudes of the diverse population of older adults. This is especially true when we consider older adults experiencing physical, sensory, or cognitive impairments that influence their ability to adopt and use technology-based solutions. This symposium highlights a variety of approaches to using technology to support older adults living with disability, and important design considerations. The first talk will highlight the important role technology can play in helping persons with cognitive and /or physical impairment in the workplace. The next talk outlines a framework and methodology designed to provide older adults with hearing or visual impairments the capability to use and adapt digital health tools. This is followed by a discussion of a research agenda to use technology to help older adults experiencing disability as a result of cognitive impairment participate in their community. Then, there will be a discussion of how digital health technologies, when considering their unique needs and abilities, can support older adults with cognitive impairment and dementia. The final talk focuses on the intersection of technology, cognitive impairment, and leisure, and explores engagement with digital games by older adults with and without dementia. Common themes that emerge and future directions will be highlighted.

Abstract Technology may improve health self-management of older people with cognitive deficits, yet these individuals may have unique needs influencing its utility. This study’s purpose was to gather current strategies described in the literature and by expert stakeholders for utilizing digital health technologies in older adults with cognitive impairment (CI) or dementia. We conducted a rapid literature review to identify articles that featured digital health technology use in persons with CI/dementia. Additionally, we conducted interviews (n=12) with expert stakeholders who were identified through online academic, professional, and community organization biographies and snowball referral. Qualitative-based thematic analysis was used to identify emergent themes from selected literature and transcribed interviews. Recommended strategies addressed instructional methods (e.g., reducing distractions), technology adaptations (e.g., simplified interface), care partner involvement, and dosage/exposure. Findings are applicable to development of technology-driven interventions and products, with the aim of improving the effectiveness of such technology for older people with CI/dementia.

People with Parkinson’s disease frequently demonstrate cognitive impairments, ranging from isolated cognitive impairments to frank dementia. Cognitive dysfunction in Parkinson’s disease has a clear impact on quality of life and independence; hence, there is a need to develop treatments that will reliably improve this important nonmotor symptom. Executive functions are the most frequently impacted cognitive domain, and they have been shown in other populations to be amenable to cognitive interventions. This chapter reviews the literature on cognitive interventions in Parkinson’s disease, and it places the literature into the context of cognitive impairment in Parkinson’s disease. It also reviews studies of cognitive interventions for other conditions. Current gaps in our understanding are highlighted, and proposals for future directions of research in this field are provided.

AbstractTo address the paucity of research investigating the implementation of multi-domain dementia prevention interventions, we implemented and evaluated a 24-week, bi-weekly multi-domain program for older adults at risk of cognitive impairment at neighborhood senior centres (SCs). It comprised dual-task exercises, cognitive training, and mobile application-based nutritional guidance. An RCT design informed by the Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, Maintenance framework was adopted. Outcome measures include cognition, quality of life, blood parameters, and physical performance. Implementation was evaluated through questionnaires administered to participants, implementers, SC managers, attendance lists, and observations. The program reached almost 50% of eligible participants, had an attrition rate of 22%, and was adopted by 8.7% of the SCs approached. It was implemented as intended; only the nutritional component was re-designed due to participants’ unfamiliarity with the mobile application. While there were no between-group differences in cognition, quality of life, and blood parameters, quality of life reduced in the control group and physical function improved in the intervention group after 24 weeks. The program was well-received by participants and SCs. Our findings show that a multi-domain program for at-risk older adults has benefits and can be implemented through neighborhood SCs. Areas of improvement are discussed.Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT04440969 retrospectively registered on 22 June 2020.

AbstractThe population of older adults (≥60 years) is currently growing. Thus, in the years to come it is expected that a high proportion of patients hospitalized will be in the older age range. In western countries, the proportion of older inpatients is about 40% in the medical and surgical hospitals units. Older people with illness is vulnerable to both physical and cognitive impairments as well as depression. Therefore, a health-promoting perspective and approach are highly warranted in clinical nursing care of older adults in medical hospitals. This chapter focuses on health promotion related to depressive symptoms, impairment in activities of daily living, and cognitive impairment in older hospitalized adults.

Abstract BackgroundDigital health technologies are being increasingly developed with the aim of allowing older adults to maintain functional independence throughout the old age, a process known as healthy ageing. Such digital health technologies for healthy ageing are expected to mitigate the socio-economic effects of population ageing and improve the quality of life of older people. However, little is known regarding the views and needs of older people regarding these technologies. AimThe aim of this study is to explore the views, needs and perceptions of community-dwelling older adults regarding the use of digital health technologies for healthy ageing. MethodFace-to-face, in-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with community-dwelling older adults (median age 79.6 years). The interview process involved both abstract reflections and practical demonstrations. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed according to inductive content analysis. ResultsThree main themes and twelve sub-themes emerged. The three main themes revolved around the following thematic areas: favorable views and perceptions on technology-assisted living, usability evaluations and ethical considerations. ConclusionsOur study reveals a generally positive attitude towards digital health technologies as participants believed digital tools could positively contribute to improving their overall wellbeing, especially if designed in a patient-centered manner. Safety concerns and ethical issues related to privacy, empowerment and lack of human contact also emerged as key considerations.

With the popularity of wearable devices, along with the development of telecommunication system there is a need for obtaining the health and fitness outcomes. So the recent advances in data analysis techniques have opened up new possibilities for using wearable technology in the digital health ecosystem. In past, it’s too difficult to use the wearable devices for healthcare system because of the size of those sensors. But now with front end amplification and wireless data transmission, the wearable devices are deployed in health monitoring systems. Although the devices are continuously monitoring the human’s body activity and collect various physiological data to increase the quality of human’s life. In this paper first we provide a research survey on available wearable or gadgets. Also we conclude with future directions in wearable research and market.

Digital health constitutes a merger of both software and hardware technology with health care delivery and management, and encompasses a number of domains, from wearable devices to artificial intelligence, each associated with widely disparate interaction and data collection models. In this review, we focus on the landscape of the current integration of digital health technology in cancer care by subdividing digital health technologies into the following sections: connected devices, digital patient information collection, telehealth, and digital assistants. In these sections, we give an overview of the potential clinical impact of such technologies as they pertain to key domains, including patient education, patient outcomes, quality of life, and health care value. We performed a search of PubMed ( www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed ) and www.ClinicalTrials.gov for numerous terms related to digital health technologies, including digital health, connected devices, smart devices, wearables, activity trackers, connected sensors, remote monitoring, electronic surveys, electronic patient-reported outcomes, telehealth, telemedicine, artificial intelligence, chatbot, and digital assistants. The terms health care and cancer were appended to the previously mentioned terms to filter results for cancer-specific applications. From these results, studies were included that exemplified use of the various domains of digital health technologies in oncologic care. Digital health encompasses the integration of a vast array of technologies with health care, each associated with varied methods of data collection and information flow. Integration of these technologies into clinical practice has seen applications throughout the spectrum of care, including cancer screening, on-treatment patient management, acute post-treatment follow-up, and survivorship. Implementation of these systems may serve to reduce costs and workflow inefficiencies, as well as to improve overall health care value, patient outcomes, and quality of life.
