Abstract If structural damage remains undetected and is allowed to grow, structure's load-bearing capacity deteriorates, which can lead to costly repairs or in extreme cases its collapse. Modal analysis is widely used to detect structural damage because, when damage, such as cracks, is introduced, structure's geometrical and/or mechanical properties change, and these changes can be used for damage detection. Peridynamics is a non-local alternative to the continuum mechanics theory that represents forces and displacements using integral equations, which are defined even with discontinuous displacement fields, thus making this theory an attractive option for damage modeling. In this paper, authors verify peridynamic (PD) modal analysis against finite-element (FE) results, and validate it against experimental modal analysis results. The modal solver was implemented in the open-source program Peridigm and four different damage configurations were considered for verification and validation. The results show close agreement between the PD and the FE results, and the PD and the experimental results. Moreover, PD modal frequencies are shown to have similar accuracy to experimental data as the FE results. It is also shown that the frequency shifts are comparable between all three types of modal analysis. The PD mode shapes agreed well with both the FE and the experimental mode shapes at all considered damage configurations. Furthermore, the change in mode shapes from the introduced damage is similar in all three analyses.

This article presents a critical review of recent research done on crack identification and localization in structural beams using numerical and experimental modal analysis. Crack identification and localization in beams are very crucial in various engineering applications such as ship propeller shafts, aircraft wings, gantry cranes, and Turbo machinery blades. It is necessary to identify the damage in time; otherwise, there may be serious consequences like a catastrophic failure of the engineering structures. Experimental modal analysis is used to study the vibration characteristics of structures like natural frequency, damping and mode shapes. The modal parameters like natural frequency and mode shapes of undamaged and damaged beams are different. Based on this reason, structural damage can be detected, especially in beams. From the review of various research papers, it is identified that a lot of the research done on beams with open transverse crack. Crack location is identified by tracking variation in natural frequencies of a healthy and cracked beam

Abstract Experimental modal analysis of a violin with three different tensions of a bass bar has been performed. The bass bar tension is the only intentionally introduced modification of the instrument. The aim of the study was to find differences and similarities between top plate modal parameters determined by a bass bar perfectly fitting the shape of the top plate, the bass bar with a tension usually applied by luthiers (normal), and the tension higher than the normal value. In the modal analysis four signature modes are taken into account. Bass bar tension does not change the sequence of mode shapes. Changes in modal damping are insignificant. An increase in bass bar tension causes an increase in modal frequencies A0 and B(1+) and does not change the frequencies of modes CBR and B(1-).

Previous studies have demonstrated the sensitivity of the dynamic behavior of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) material over the carbon fiber direction by performing uniaxial excitation tests on a simple specimen. However, the variations in modal parameters (damping coefficient and resonance frequency) over the direction of carbon fiber have been partially explained in previous studies because all modal parameters have only been calculated using the representative summed frequency response function without modal analysis. In this study, the dynamic behavior of CFRP specimens was identified from experimental modal analysis and compared five CFRP specimens (carbon fiber direction: 0°, 30°, 45°, 60°, and 90°) and an isotropic SCS13A specimen using the modal assurance criterion. The first four modes were derived from the SCS13A specimen; they were used as reference modes after verifying with the analysis results from a finite element model. Most of the four mode shapes were found in all CFRP specimens, and the similarity increased when the carbon fiber direction was more than 45°. The anisotropic nature was dominant in three cases of carbon fiber, from 0° to 45°, and the most sensitive case was found in Specimen #3.

A linear damped hybrid (continuous/discrete components) model is developed in this paper to characterize the dynamic behavior of serpentine belt drive systems. Both internal material damping and external tensioner arm damping are considered. The complex modal analysis method is developed to perform dynamic analysis of linear non-self-adjoint hybrid serpentine belt-drive systems. The adjoint eigenfunctions are acquired in terms of the mode shapes of an auxiliary hybrid system. The closed-form characteristic equation of eigenvalues and the exact closed-form solution for dynamic response of the non-self-adjoint hybrid model are obtained. Numerical simulations are performed to demonstrate the method of analysis. It is shown that there exists an optimum damping value for each vibration mode at which vibration decays the fastest.

Experimental modal analysis is a relatively young part of dynamics, which deals with the vibration modes identification of machines or their parts. Its development has started since the beginning of the eighties, when the computers hardware equipment has improved and the fast Fourier transform (FFT) could be used for the results determination. Nowadays it provides an uncountable set of vibration analysis possibilities starting with conventional contact transducers of acceleration and ending with modern noncontact optical methods. In this contribution we mention the use of high-speed digital image correlation by experimental determination of mode shapes and modal frequencies. The aim of our work is to create a program application called Modan 3D enabling the performing of experimental modal analysis and operational modal analysis. In this paper the experimental modal analysis of a thin steel sample performed with Q-450 Dantec Dynamics is described. In Modan 3D the experiment data were processed and the vibration modes were determined. The reached results were verified by PULSE modulus specialized for mechanical vibration analysis.

In the far north, low temperatures and atmospheric icing are a major danger for the safe operation of wind turbines. It can cause several problems in fatigue loads, the balance of the rotor and aerodynamics. With the aim of improving the rigidity of the wind turbine blade, composite materials are currently being used. A numerical work aims to evaluate the effect of ice on composite blades and to determine the most adequate material under icing conditions. Different ice thicknesses are considered in the lower part of the blade. In this paper, modal analysis is performed to obtain the natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes of the structure. This analysis is elaborated using the finite element method (FEM) computer program through ABAQUS software. The results have laid that the natural frequencies of the blade varied according to the material and thickness of ice and that there is no resonance phenomenon.

The deflection of the beam estimated from modal flexibility matrix (MFM) indirectly is used in structural damage detection due to the fact that deflection is less sensitive to experimental noise than the element in MFM. However, the requirement for mass-normalized mode shapes (MMSs) with a high spatial resolution and the difficulty in damage quantification restricts the practicability of MFM-based deflection damage detection. A damage detection method using the deflections estimated from MFM is proposed for beam structures. The MMSs of beams are identified by using a parked vehicle. The MFM is then formulated to estimate the positive-bending-inspection-load (PBIL) caused deflection. The change of deflection curvature (CDC) is defined as a damage index to localize damage. The relationship between the damage severity and the deflection curvatures is further investigated and a damage quantification approach is proposed accordingly. Numerical and experimental examples indicated that the presented approach can detect damages with adequate accuracy at the cost of limited number of sensors. No finite element model (FEM) is required during the whole detection process.

Vibration based structural health monitoring methods are usually dependent on the first several orders of modal information, such as natural frequencies, mode shapes and the related derived features. These information are usually in a low frequency range. These global vibration characteristics may not be sufficiently sensitive to minor structural damage. The alternative non-destructive testing method using piezoelectric transducers, called as electromechanical impedance (EMI) technique, has been developed for more than two decades. Numerous studies on the EMI based structural health monitoring have been carried out based on representing impedance signatures in frequency domain by statistical indicators, which can be used for damage detection. On the other hand, damage quantification and localization remain a great challenge for EMI based methods. Physics-based EMI methods have been developed for quantifying the structural damage, by using the impedance responses and an accurate numerical model. This article provides a comprehensive review of the exciting researches and sorts out these approaches into two categories: data-driven based and physics-based EMI techniques. The merits and limitations of these methods are discussed. In addition, practical issues and research gaps for EMI based structural health monitoring methods are summarized.
