The Trafficking Panic in Late Imperial Austria

This chapter explores a variety of issues central to the turn-of-the-century Austrian panic over trafficking. They include anti-Semitism, Jews as protagonists and victims, and mass migration in an urbanizing world, as well as why particular Austrian cities were associated with the trade in women. The chapter analyzes the government’s domestic and international efforts to combat trafficking, as well as the role bourgeois reform organizations played. It explores the relationship between the trafficker and the trafficked, arguing that these women and girls were not simply victims, but sometimes willing participants, or something in between, in order to sketch a more nuanced picture of turn-of-the-century “white slaving.” The term “trafficker” is employed to reflect the way sources (the state, journalists, reform groups) viewed the issue, not because it can be proved that the problem was as widespread as they claimed.

This review essay examines works of Russian and Soviet Jewish History by Eugene Avrutin, Oleg Budnitskii, and Yaacov Ro’i that focus on the relationship between Jews and the state during the “long” Russian twentieth century. The works examine this relationship in three discrete periods: the late imperial era proceeding the revolutions of 1917; the era of the Russian Civil War; and the late Soviet era of stagnation and decline. Challenging interpretations of Soviet historiography that have emphasized the open inclusion of Jews in the Soviet project, these works collectively stress the need to reconsider the persistence of racial discourses and anti-Semitism that structured relations between Jews and the state before and after the Bolshevik revolution.

The objective of this work is to reflect on the categories of thought through which it is a question of apprehending the history in the book, hybrid between story and novel, Historia argentina, by Rodrigo Fresán, from an analysis of the narrative forms through those that build the stories, since the structure of the work, by way of stories that work by resonance, reflects the way in which history is conceived. To do this, I fundamentally start form the ideas of Ricardo Piglia about the relationship between politics and literature, for whom fiction reproduces the language of the State and creates its reverse. And I also turn to the theories of Eloy Fernández Porta, studied in Afterpop, to demarcate the way in which the use of pop references in this work responds to a critique of the forms of official culture. Therefore, the objective of this work is the analysis of the revision of the language with which Argentine history has been articulated, and the search for another language to write and apprehend in Argentine history, taking as a central idea the concept of distancing, since it figures the attitude, both emotional and intellectual, regarding the writing of history.

This article attempts to take stock of the state of research on democracy and culture by providing answers to several sets of questions. It seeks to improve the understanding of the relationship between culture and action, and between political culture and democratic outcomes. The article begins by exploring the way the literature has dealt with the possible meaning of culture and political culture and their relationship to action. It also suggests why there has been little contribution to democracy derived from political culture research, and identifies how the efforts to rethink how and why the subject matter is approached in certain ways led many analysts to break out of established epistemological demarcations. This eventually led to the reinvigorated tools of investigation and research on democracy and civic culture. The article concludes with a discussion on the implications of improved tools of investigation for future research.

This chapter examines the relationship between the state's presence at the urban margins and the depacification of poor people's daily lives in Arquitecto Tucci, focusing in particular on the role of the local police in the neighborhood and the way it partakes in the crime it is supposed to be controlling. It first considers the ways in which the local police see the area and its residents, showing that police agents understand the origins and character of violence as “cultural.” It then presents a series of vignettes to depict the particular presence of the repressive arm of the state in Arquitecto Tucci before discussing police brutality and the highly selective nature of law enforcement when it comes to incarceration of offenders. It argues that law enforcement in Arquitecto Tucci is intermittent, selective, and contradictory.

This chapter explores the history of ideas about intervention in family, highlighting attempts to shape children's upbringing for the sake of the nation's future. A consistent and influential idea has been that undesirable attitudes and actions, and the propensity for deprivation, are transmitted down the generations through the way that parenting shapes children's minds and brains. The chapter considers the relationship between interventions designed to address fears about the state of the nation in the form of poverty, crime, and disorder, and understandings of the role of parents and families as they link to shifting emphasises of the capitalist system across time.

AbstractThe word relationship indicates the way in which two or more things are connected, or the state of being connected. There is nothing in nature really unrelated to anything else. Medicines are interrelated to each other in various ways of therapeutic action. Knowledge of these relations is very important for accurate prescribing. Hahnemann was always careful to observe and record the antidotes to the remedies he proved. The relationship of remedies is the most useful section in therapeutic pocket book. Even Kent advocated the use of this particular section which can be studied at various levels of mind, parts, sensations, modalities, etc. But it is the least understood and least used because of neglect on the part of physicians. The practitioners are mastering the art of individualisation which is one of the pillars of homoeopathic treatment but more stress needs to be laid upon the grouping of remedies based on their relationship which has great importance in practice for the ideal cure. The homoeopathic literature was found to be very rich in describing the relationship which every remedy owes to each other. This review aims to bring forward the underlying facts and experiences of different authors regarding remedy relationship.

AbstractIn this essay I will demonstrate the way in which the relationship between political authority and religious authority evolved throughout the history of Islam; and point out where religious rule gave way to the creation of nation states. I will map corresponding changes inZakātcollections, among various nation states, to support my argument in favour of a continued separation of religious and political functions in contemporary nations with Muslim majority populations.

The relationship between society and the State takes various forms. The breadth of such interaction involves the development and implementation of mechanisms of interaction not previously used when extraordinary events occur. The provision of public services with the introduction of extraordinary administrative and legal regimes is at the same time experiencing significant difficulties. The difficulties require the transformation of the system of providing public services not only in order to solve new problems, but also to increase the effectiveness of public authorities with the population when abolishing the extraordinary regime. The authors concluded that in Russian law enforcement practice, the use of an unannounced procedure for the provision of public services should expand. The consolidation of a proactive (proactive) regime is a step in the process of improving the efficiency of public services. However, the movement in the indicated direction must continue. It is necessary to exclude from the legislation the principle of the application procedure for the provision of public services.

The tracking of students in the schools is a topic that obligates social and educational reference. This is a fieldthat exposes gaps and contradictions regarding the possibilities and intentions of parts of Israeli society. It is difficultto definewho is being talked about. In addition, it is difficultto separate between or limit the reference to the single student as a real and feeling subject and the desire of the system for a child as a product of education. It is difficultto describe a general picture without forgetting the individuals in it, the students, when the relationship between the tracking, the dropping out, and the exclusion is unavoidable. This article is an attempt to examine the argument presented in research studies that the gaps between different groups in the population derive from the policy of tracking in education from the establishment of the State of Israel until today and that this policy is intentional. The way that the school as an organization acts and the topics with which it copes can be explained in social policy and in the sociological rationale that characterizes society in Israel.Which social and educational policy serves the tracking of students and why, despite the data and the numbers that indicate a large gap, is the topic of tracking not present in the educational discussion? I seek to assert that research in the field is insufficient and thait is necessary to place the topic on the agenda and conduct an educational discussion.
