Chapter 4, ‘Vesuvius on the Strand’, continues to explore the idea of seriality and catastrophe through the ‘cross-class obsession’ with Mount Vesuvius. There were numerous displays and shows of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in Naples all over London in this period, and this chapter considers the versions of the ‘real’ past—deep or recent—that they produced and how these might have contributed to a construction of a sense of the present. Bulwer’s phenomenally popular hit of 1834, The Last Days of Pompeii, which was received more as a multi-media show than as a novel, is used here as a test-case for re-thinking conventional literary generic hierarchies through a more nuanced appreciation of the possible uses and pleasures of texts in this period of widening readership and cultural participation.

Summary Using Mizar [1], in the context of a real vector space, we introduce the concept of affine ratio of three aligned points (see [5]). It is also equivalent to the notion of “Mesure algèbrique”1, to the opposite of the notion of Teilverhältnis2 or to the opposite of the ordered length-ratio [9]. In the second part, we introduce the classic notion of “cross-ratio” of 4 points aligned in a real vector space. Finally, we show that if the real vector space is the real line, the notion corresponds to the classical notion3 [9]: The cross-ratio of a quadruple of distinct points on the real line with coordinates x1, x2, x3, x4 is given by: $$({x_1},{x_2};{x_3},{x_4}) = {{{x_3} - {x_1}} \over {{x_3} - {x_2}}}.{{{x_4} - {x_2}} \over {{x_4} - {x_1}}}$$ In the Mizar Mathematical Library, the vector spaces were first defined by Kusak, Leonczuk and Muzalewski in the article [6], while the actual real vector space was defined by Trybulec [10] and the complex vector space was defined by Endou [4]. Nakasho and Shidama have developed a solution to explore the notions introduced by different authors4 [7]. The definitions can be directly linked in the HTMLized version of the Mizar library5. The study of the cross-ratio will continue within the framework of the Klein- Beltrami model [2], [3]. For a generalized cross-ratio, see Papadopoulos [8].

This paper studies different acceleration techniques for unsteady flow calculations. The results are compared with a non-accelerated, fully-explicit solution in terms of time-averaged pressure distributions, the unsteady pressure and entropy in the frequency domain and the skin friction factor. The numerical method solves the unsteady three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations via an explicit time-stepping procedure. The flow in the first stage of a modern industrial gas turbine is chosen as a test case. After a description of the numerical method used for the simulation, the test case is introduced. The comparison of the different numerical algorithms for explicit schemes is intended to ease the decision about which acceleration technique to use for calculations as far as accuracy and computational time are concerned. The convergence acceleration methods under consideration are, respectively, explicit time-stepping with implicit residual averaging, explicit time-consistent multigrid and implicit dual time stepping. The investigation and comparison of the different acceleration techniques are applicable to all explicit unsteady flow solvers. As another point of interest, the influence of the stage blade count ratio on the flow field is investigated. For this purpose, a simulation with a stage pitch ratio of unity is compared with a calculation using the real ratio of 78:80, which requires a more sophisticated method for periodic boundary condition treatment. This paper should help to decide whether it is vital from the turbine designer’s point of view to model the real pitch ratio in unsteady flow simulations in turbine stages.

The market of the hybrid electric vehicles has been increasing for several years. Different commercial EV and PHEV solutions are available for passenger cars and light vehicles for freight deliveries. However, the market of heavy trucks still regards traditional ICE vehicles powered by diesel oil fuel. The recent interest for electric solutions have been pushing the development of the hybrid solutions, but only micro-hybrid systems are considered feasible for heavy truck applications. The proposed research aims to define a methodological approach with a virtual model in order to simulate the behavior of a hybrid heavy truck. The scope of this research is the feasibility analysis of a retrofit hybrid heavy truck. A real driving cycle has been used in order to obtain reliable results in terms of cost, energy consumption and gas emission. The layout of the hybrid system has been proposed as well as the sizing of battery and electric motor. A commercial tool has been used for the vehicle modelling and simulation. As a test case, an 18-ton truck has been analyzed with a 10-liter diesel engine. Firstly, the simulation of the diesel truck has been reproduced considering the real driving cycle data. Secondly, the simulation activity has been focused on the evaluation of the hybrid system behavior by investigating different battery sizes with the same boundary conditions related to the real driving cycle.

Every culture has some standard of right and wrong. This is not fully discovered in a people's behavior, our author reminds us, but in their ideals. These ideals may, in essence, closely parallel the Decalogue; but this essence may be applied with widely varying emphases in the real life situations of different cultures. If the missionary, jealous for the essence of God's righteous demands, relies too heavily on the applications and emphases of his own culture, he may experience little conviction of sin in his hearers — and confused standards in the emerging church. Fully recognizing the dilemma this imposes on the cross-cultural witness, linguist-translator Dye finds hope and help in an ethnotheological approach to the problem.

The altar scene in Revelation 6:9–11 has been interpreted as a positive image of martyred saints being presence with God in heaven. This article, however, challenges this traditional assumption. Based on Roman imperial coinage, especially those coins with images of altars, it is likely that John portrayed the altar in his narrative as not representing the heavenly altar of God but the imperial altar of Rome. John takes well-known Roman images and challenges his readers to resist the temptation these altars represent as symbols of the false ideology espoused by Rome. He also illustrates how these altars, like the cross of Christ, may become the symbol for his readers' martyrdom. This article also suggests that architectural images of altars on Roman coins can provide a way to understand the strange position of the martyred ones who are “under the altar.”

25 Background: NCRT followed by surgery per the CROSS trial regimen is an accepted standard of care in the treatment of EC and GEJC. When treatments are used in the real-world setting, there are often patient, treatment and potential outcome differences compared to the original clinical trial. The study aim was to assess the real-world application and outcomes of the CROSS trial protocol. Methods: A retrospective chart review was undertaken of 83 patients (pts) with EC or GEJC who were treated from June 2012 to June 2018 with CRT. 65 pts were with NCRT intent to proceed to surgery. Pts’ demographics, clinical, pathological, treatment and surgical characteristics were assessed and exploratory analyses were conducted to review these factors and outcomes. Analyses included Chi-square, t-tests and Kaplan-Meier. Results: For pts who underwent NCRT (n = 65): median age was 68 yrs (range 52-80), male 79%, adenocarcinoma 82%, median (m) tumor length 5 cm, GERD 43%, clinical stage II/III 95%, and BMI > 30 in 37%. 80% completed CRT with RT ≥ 41.4 Gy; of these 88% had ≥ 50.4 Gy. Delay/interruption in chemotherapy occurred in 46% and in RT 37%. Pts who underwent surgery were younger (p = 0.04) and weighed more (p = 0.05). mOS was 37 months (M) v 14 M in those who started CRT ≤ 8 weeks (w) from diagnosis v > 8 w (p = 0.10). The median time from CRT to surgery was 8.9 w. 40 pts had surgery with a complete response in 38% and a R0 resection in 98%. Postoperative major and minor complications occurred in 67%. Those < 75 yrs v ≥ 75 yrs had a mOS of 32 M v 15 M respectively (log rank p = 0.46). 25 pts did not get surgery; 28% was due to death/progression. Pts who proceeded to surgery had a mOS of 35 M v 12 M in pts who did not go to surgery (log rank p = 0.002). Further correlative outcome data will be presented. Conclusions: Real-world data in our center showed patient, tumor and treatment differences compared to the CROSS trial protocol. Despite the broadening of eligibility and treatment criteria, survival in a single institution setting is maintained with trimodality therapy compared to NCRT alone. Real-world data is of value in the assessment of therapeutic validity of clinical trial data.

The article declares the author's concept of the cross-multidimensional organization of the educational process. From the standpoint of a multi-media approach in education, the author considers the formation and development of cross-cutting competencies among students in the system of general, professional, higher and additional education. The grouping of cross-cutting competences, a set of measures in education, contributing to their formation are presented. In the aspects of solving the problems of the formation and development of cross-cutting competencies, a characteristic of the advancing effects of a cross-multidimensional educational environment is given.
