LORI LAITMAN (b. 1955)Men with Small Heads (2000)

This chapter studies Lori Laitman’s Men with Small Heads (2000). From a large and tempting selection of song cycles, this one is especially to be prized, since the counter-tenor repertoire is in need of a boost. The piece, though, lies just as well for mezzo or baritone. It fizzes with confidence and verve from start to finish, with words always audible, as long as the singer has the requisite verbal panache and slickness. The texts are a delight too—their bracing ironies aptly captured throughout. The composer has given careful thought to phrasing, and her markings throughout demonstrate her innate understanding of the voice. The words do, of course, suit an American accent, and this should be borne in mind. The musical idiom is neatly poised on the edge of tonality, identifiably ‘American’ yet entirely personal and cohesive, with an inbuilt rhythmic flexibility tailored to the flow of the texts. The piano writing also has flair and vitality and is clear-textured enough for the voice to come through.

Abstract Covid-19 pandemic has enforced Indian engineering institutions (EIs) to bring their previously half-shut shades completely down. Fetching new admissions into EI campus during pandemic it has become ‘now or never’ situation for EIs. During crises situation institutions have struggled to come back on the normal track. The pandemic that has changed students’ behavior and family’s preferences drastically due to mental stress and emotional life attached with it. Consequently, it becomes prerequisite, and emergency need to examine the choice characteristics influencing selection of EI during Covid-19 pandemic situation. The purpose of this study is to critically examine institutional influence and pandemic influence due to Covid-19 that affects students’ choice about an engineering institution (EI) and consequently to explore relationships between institutional and pandemic influence. The findings of this quantitative research, conducted through a self-reported survey have revealed that institutional as well as pandemic influence have governed the EI choice under Covid-19 pandemic. Secondly, pandemic influence is positively affected by institutional influence. The study demonstrated that EIs will have to reposition themselves to normalize pandemic influence by tuning institutional characteristics that regulates situational influence and new enrollments. It can be yardstick for policy makers to attract new enrollments under pandemic situation.

This paper addresses the question of the definition of compounding from a terminological perspective. In terminology, concepts are defined by a selection of properties shared by prototypical cases. For scientific terminology, the selection is validated by the strength of the theories that can use the definition. It is shown that morphophonological criteria often adduced in the delimitation of compounding are not adequate in a universal definition. In order to come up with a better definition, a two-step procedure is proposed. In the first step, a universal definition is used to determine for constructions in a particular language whether they belong to compounding. In the second step, language-specific properties are used to identify instances of these constructions. A definition is proposed that takes a compound as a word with a binary, headed structure, a relation between the elements that is not determined by compounding and a non-head that is not introduced as an entity in the discourse. The use of this definition is illustrated with a number of constructions in different languages. It is shown that expressions commonly called exocentric and copulative compounds are generally not compounds in this definition, but that some expressions that have been labelled as such are in fact compounds. The two-step procedure demonstrated here for compounding can also be used for other linguistic terms.

Abstract The global context of climate change predicts increases in the risk of important climatic factors that could directly influence plant survival and crop yields. Such projections are made using models of plant growth and development, climate, and possible future scenarios. However, the use of different models and methodologies, combined with different scenarios, produces an infinity of contrasting results, considering different combinations of temperature, water distribution, and CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. This work makes projections of the possible climatic and environmental effects on the development and the yield of the soybean considering different scenarios. For maintenance and yield improvements, the needs and possibilities of using techniques related to the climate and the use and protection of soils and cultivars already adapted to different environments are emphasized. It is also expected that science will evolve to adapt plants to the expected stresses. Science should act to select genotypes that can respond to stresses by initiating processes that result in the activation of responses at the molecular, biochemical, and physiological level, in the fight to increase tolerance to abiotic stresses. Such advances lead us to believe that the exploration of the existing genetic variability will enable the selection of genotypes tolerant to drought, saline soils, and high temperatures. It is concluded that the set of knowledge that we have today, together with the scientific advances that are yet to come, allows humanity to continue having the hope of having a better future than those predicted in the most pessimistic scenarios.

AbstractThis is a modified subtotal laryngectomy. On the tumour-free side of the larynx, some posterior structures, with their neurovascular supply are preserved. The endolaryngeal mucosa is tubed in continuity with the trachea below and projects into the pharynx above. Thus a myomucosal shunt is formed. Air is directed into it by finger occlusion of the tracheal stoma. The voice production is highly satisfactory. Aspiration is prevented by constriction of the thyroarytenoid muscle which provides a valved upper end of the tube. The possibility of leaving tumour in the laryngeal remnant is eliminated by careful selection of patients, and re-confirmation of tumour extent intra-operatively and a frozen section.Eleven such operations have been performed since October 1983 for squamous cell carcinoma, some previously irradiated. None of the patients had local recurrence. Only one had an aspiration problem which later resolved. All acquired a satisfactory voice

In recent times, vocal fold problems have been increasing dramatically due to unhealthy social habits and voice abuse. Non-invasive methods like acoustic analysis of voice signals can be used to investigate such problems. Various feature extraction techniques are used to classify the voice signals into normal and pathological. Among them, long-time acoustical parameters are used by many researchers. The selection of best long-time acoustical parameters is very important to reduce the computational complexity, as well as to achieve better accuracy with minimum number of features. In order to select best long-time acoustical parameters, different feature reduction methods or feature selection methods are proposed by researchers. In this work, genetic algorithm (GA) based optimal selection of long-time acoustical parameters is proposed to achieve higher accuracy with minimum number of features. The classification is carried out using k-nearest neighbourhood (k-NN) classifier. In comparison with other works in the literature, the simulation results show that a minimum of 5 features are required to classify the voice signals by GA and a better accuracy of 94.29% is achieved.

This article studies the mobility of human voices in Basilio Martín Patino’s series of television films about Andalusia. It explores the voice as an object of cinematic representation and as a focal point of affective investments in a transnational context of postcolonial and neo-colonial power struggles. Furthermore, it scrutinizes a selection of voices that speak and sing throughout the series and considers the location of these voices across the soundtrack of Patino’s films. Through its mobile vocal aesthetic, Patino’s film series gestures towards an ethics of representation in which flamenco becomes a wandering signifier that can only be envisioned in the plural, through a myriad set of accented voices and memories.

Alternative dispute resolution (ADR) includes dispute resolution processes and techniques that act as a means for disagreeing parties to come to an agreement short of litigation. Despite historic resistance to ADR by many popular parties and their advocates, some courts now require some parties to resort to ADR of some type, usually mediation. The rising popularity of ADR can be explained by the increasing caseload of traditional courts, the perception that ADR imposes fewer costs than litigation, a preference for confidentiality, and the desire of some parties to have greater control over the selection of the individual or individuals who will decide their dispute. In Indonesia based on the Law No. 30/1999 concerning Alternative Dispute Resolution and Arbitration, ADR is interpreted as alternative to adjudication as it is reflected in the title of the Law No. 30/1999. Based on article 32 the collateral forclosure is enable to be done. The procedure of this were adopting the procedure of the collateral forclosure in civil court.Keyword : Alternative dispute resolution, collateral forclosure.

This paper aims to discover how to frame Muhammadiyah’s political direction news in the 2019 Presidential Election on Republika.co.id, Kumparan.com, and Tribunnews.com. From this phenomenon arises a question of precisely the political direction of Muhammadiyah in the 2019 Presidential Election? The method used in this research is the framing analysis of Robert N. Entman’s model, which states that each media constructing news must go through two stages, namely the selection of issues and the highlighting of aspects. Analyzing data obtained through 4 steps, (1) Define problems, (2) Diagnose causes, (3) Make moral judgment, and (4) Treatment Recommendation. This research shows that Muhammadiyah is a social organization in an association engaged in da'wah Amar Ma'ruf Nahi Munkar and Tajdid. Muhammadiyah as a religious movement has always been a lyric for the participants of the presidential election because it has an excellent political power second after Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), which is said to be a representation of the voice of Muslims. In early September, the number one vice-presidential candidate, Ma'ruf Amin, visited the central office. Muhammadiyah, and the previous month, the number two pair, Prabowo-Sandiaga, also asked for a blessing to participate in the 5th Annual event. After that, I reveal that this study showed three online mass media: Republika.co.id, Kumparan.com, and Tribunnews.com in their coverage of Muhammadiyah's political direction in the 2019 presidential election were neutral. Muhammadiyah, as a religious organization, chose consistency to maintain neutrality in the presidential election and give all Muhammadiyah citizens freedom to vote at the five-yearly event.

A survey using questionnaires, observation and interviews was conducted in 2011 to ascertain the collection stewardship strategies of archival repositories with religious archives in Pietermaritzburg. The study concluded that there was a need to establish a religious archives group in order for the voice of ecclesiastical archives to resonate across South Africa. Through this group, it is hoped that there will be greater coordination and networking amongst the archival repositories. The help of associations such as the South African Society of Archivists, the Oral History Association of South Africa and the South African Preservation Group could greatly assist in fostering best practices in archival management. To champion this worthwhile cause, it would be ideal to come up with an Open Day on religious archives to serve as an advocacy platform. These recommendations are made against a backdrop of the poor state of religious archives in Pietermaritzburg, resulting from acute underfunding and which threatens the survival of this record in the long term.
