Kraepelin’s influence in renaming melancholia “depression” was enormous. But that alone would not suffice to explain why, an ocean away and a hundred years later, everybody became depressed. Mediators were needed to carry the doctrine of depression to the discipline of psychiatry, and then to individual patients. Those mediators were the American psychoanalysts, many of them distinguished migrants from Europe, and they gave pride of place to neurotic depression. Other mediators extracted depression and anxiety from the pool of nerves and yoked them together, making mixed depression-anxiety the favored disorder. To gain some perspective: In the first third of the twentieth century, in a great paradigm shift that transferred behavioral disorders from neurology to psychiatry, the spotlight shift ed from nerves, a diagnosis that implicated the whole body, to mood, a diagnosis that implicated mainly the mind. Mental illness triumphed over nervous illness, and depression became the main mood diagnosis. In 1908, Oswald Bumke, a psychiatrist then at the university psychiatric hospital in Freiburg, Germany (later to become professor of psychiatry in Munich), scolded the family physicians who never suspected depression in their wealthy patients whom they sent from spa to spa and sanatorium to sanatorium for the treatment of nondisease (symptoms without organic causes). The family doctors, who doubtlessly suspected the symptoms were of psychological origin, focused on the symptoms themselves; Bumke, more interested in mental than in physical symptoms, focused on what he believed the underlying cause to be: “depression,” as manifest in symptoms such as tiredness or an anxious preoccupation with their bodily health. For clinicians of Bumke’s generation, depression was a familiar concept. In understanding the rise of depression there are two questions that have to be sorted out: Why the depression diagnosis becomes so common and why depressive symptoms become divorced from the nervous syndrome and take on a life of their own as an affective disorder. Because events on both tracks happen around the same time, the narratives interblend, but they are separate stories. To foreshadow, it was American psychoanalysis that first put depression in the spotlight.

Objectives. The family doctor plays an important role in preventing mental health disorders through medical education and early detection of patients with mental health disorders. The objectives of this research are to evaluate the possibility of family doctors to do prevention through medical education and to apply questionnaires to detect depression in patients with chronic disease. In addition, the research aims to identify the barriers perceived by family physicians in performing these activities. Material and method. The research was conducted on the basis of a self-administered questionnaire, which was answered voluntarily by 153 family doctors from 37 counties in Romania, both in rural and urban areas. Results and discussions. The answers to the questions regarding the availability of doctors to do medical education for the prevention of mental health disorders and the possibility to apply questionnaires for the identification of depression in patients with chronic pathology were analyzed. The results show that 59.48% of family doctors do medical education for the prevention of mental health disorders and 41.18% apply questionnaires to detect depression, during the consultation, in patients with chronic pathology. Regarding the barriers perceived by family doctors in achieving prevention, 40.32% answered that they do not do medical education to prevent mental health disorders due to the lack of adapted work tools, 25.80% chose the lack of knowledge of communication techniques and 22.58% lack of time. 45.56% of family physicians answered that they did not apply questionnaires to detect depression due to lack of necessary tools and 40% due to lack of time. Conclusions. The research reveals both the role and the needs of family doctors in the prevention and promotion of mental health in patients with chronic pathology. The ability of family physicians to pursue medical education and the willingness to apply questionnaires for depression can be improved by allocating resources, such as tailored work tools, courses to improve knowledge of specific communication techniques, and time spent on these activities.

Ath-Thusi uses Aristotle's understanding of the practical reason of the theory of surgery. According to Ath-Thusi, the cause of deviation is anything excessive. Thus, the unbalanced state of the soul is caused by the advantages, disadvantages, or morbidity of the mind. Diversity in a society is a necessity, a household, as the smallest community of a complex society and full of differences, it is certainly necessary to be based on the building of togetherness and mutual respect between one another. This article will describe the creative ideas of Khawajah Nashiruddin Ath-Thusi related to the philosophy of the household in order to answer the present-day problematic of the family.

Abstract The aim of this research was to determine to what extent different variables describe the style and way of life present within the student population in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In this sense, in addition to general data on examinees, gender differences were identified, the assessment of parental dimensions of control and emotion, overall family circumstances, level of empathy, intercultural sensitivity, role models, preferences of lifestyles, everyday habits and resistance and (or) tendencies to depressive, anxiety states and stress. The survey included a sample of 457 examinees, students of undergraduate studies at the University of Zenica and the University of Sarajevo, with a total of 9 faculties and 10 departments covering technical, natural, social sciences and humanities. The obtained data give a broad picture of the everyday life of youth and confirm some previously theoretically and empirically justified theses about the connection of the family background of students, everyday habits, with the level of empathy, intercultural sensitivity and preferences of the role models and lifestyles of the examinees.

Introduction: In today’s realities of health care reform in Ukraine family doctors play a leading role. The aim of our work was to analyze the medical cards of patients who applied for medical care to the family medicine clinic. Materials and methods: It was analyzed outpatient medical cards of 87 patients who applied to the family medicine clinic in the Khotov village, Kyiv region. The study included people aged 18 to 60 years, which corresponded to the groups of young and middle ages according to the WHO classification. Review: Our findings indicate the prevalence of functional changes among young people: somatoform dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system - 9 (37,5%) and the development of organic manifestations at middle-aged patients: arterial hypertension - 32 (62,7%) and coronary artery disease - 17 (33,3%). Conclusions: This study is important for determining the risk groups, early diagnosis and prevention of diseases.

I would argue that history students should understand that the whole body of historical writing consists of interpretations of the past. They should be able to analyse a wide variety of texts and form their own opinions on a historical topic, and should be able to construct a coherent argument, using evidence to support their opinion. In doing so, they should be actively aware that their argument is no more “true” than that offered by any other historian. It is as much a product of their personal biography and the social formation in which they live as of the evidence used in its construction. Even this evidence is the product of other personal biographies and other social forces.

Abstract Background The purpose of this study is to forward the implementation of an operational evidence-based state screening program of common diseases in Ukraine, where currently no state-based and evidence-based screening (EBS) exists. EBS should be performed by Family Doctors in a primary care setting and concern prevalent diseases in adults, such as: obesity (BMI), hypertension (BP measurement), diabetes (glycaemia), dyslipidemia (cholesterol/lipids), colon cancer (FOBT/colonoscopy), breast cancer (mammography), STIs (chlamydia, syphilis), HIV, HBV, HCV (i.e. serology or other rapid tests), HPV (swabs), cervical cancer (test Pap). depression (i.e., PHQ-9), and smoking (i.e., Fagerstrom). Methods Four needs-based research actions were led among citizens and healthcare professionals, based on multidimensional empowerment. Internal Strengths and Weaknesses of the ongoing implementation process were identified through these studies, whereas external Opportunities and Threats were determined by the present socio-cultural and political context. This SWOT analysis is likely to guide future state-based initiatives to accomplish EBS implementation in Ukraine. Results Internal Strengths are the bottom-up multidimensional empowerment approach, teaching of EBS and the development of an internet-based platform “Screening adviser” to assist shared decision making for person-centred EBS programs. Internal Weaknesses identified for the Family Doctors are a heterogeneous screening and the risk of decreasing motivation to screen. External Opportunities include the ongoing PHC reform, the existent WONCA and WHO support, and the existence of EBS programs in Europe. External Threats are the lack of national guidelines, not fully introduced gate keeping system, the vulnerable socio-economic situation, the war situation in the East of Ukraine and the Covid-19 pandemic. Conclusions We started EBS implementation through research actions, based on a multidimensional empowerment of citizens, HCP and in EBS pathways involved stakeholder teams, to foster a sustainable operational human resource to get involved in that new EBS pathway to implement. The presented SWOT-analysis of this ongoing implementation process allows to plan and optimize future steps towards a state based and supports EBS program in Ukraine.

<p class="norm">The aim of this article is to shed some light on patterns of and major motives for the adoption of different types of disruptive learning innovations by Unisa academics. To realise the aim of the study, the following questions were addressed: What are the reasons for adopting disruptive learning innovations? What is the level of interaction with disruptive innovations? What training do Unisa academics require on disruptive innovations? A qualitative approach was adopted by conducting focus group interviews with 76 Unisa academics. The data was analysed using open and axial coding, where dominant themes from the discussions were identified and discussed in detail. The findings show that the interaction of Unisa lecturers with different technologies varied from technology to technology. The study also found that disruptive innovations play a pivotal role in opening avenues and collapsing the transactional distance in an ODL institution. Some lecturers lack skill in using some technology, which is a cause for concern. Therefore, lecturers need to be trained in using technology and develop a good understanding of it to improve teaching and learning.</p>
