The Oxford Handbook of Political Consumerism addresses the study of political consumerism. It discusses how production and consumption affect broader societal affairs at home and abroad, and how the phenomenon of political consumerism has developed in different directions—geographically, conceptually, and methodologically—and in multiple sectors, at multiple levels, and involving multiple disciplines. Its varieties create challenges for scholars to make sense of the phenomenon. Critical questions arise about its appropriate conceptual framing and methodologies. This introductory chapter defines and elaborates upon political consumerism and its four forms (boycotts, buycotts, discursive actions, and lifestyle endeavors). It offers an overview of the Handbook’s six thematic parts: political consumerism’s history, its theory and research design, its presence in major industry sectors, its global geographic spread and practice, its democratic paradoxes and challenges, and its problem-solving potential. This chapter also provides summaries and reviews of the Handbook’s thirty-nine chapters.

The aim of this study was to know the influence of Problem Solving Strategy implementation in cooperative learning of structural approach Think Pair Share (TPS) to mathematics learning outcome of VIII class students of SMP Negeri 14 Pekanbaru. This study use pre experimental research design using The static group comparison research design. The instruments of  data collection include early mahematics skills test and mathematics learning outcome test. Data were analyzed using t test. The result of this study showed that there is influence of problem solving strategy in cooperative learning of structural approach Think Pair Share (TPS)  to mathematics learning outcome  of  VIII class students of SMP Negeri 14 Pekanbaru

This study presents the problem that is solving math story question is a difficulty for students so the teacher uses a problem solving model and students will find it easier to understand the meaning of the story question and be able to solve them. The research design is qualitative and descriptive approach. The subjects in this study were the principal, student guardians of grade 4 (mathematics teacher), and students. Data collection techniques were in the form of interviews, observation, and documentation. The results of this study indicate that by planning, implementing, evaluating the use of a good problem solving model will be able to solve problems, with the obstacles and efforts will be get a good result.

This introductory chapter links inequality with battlefield performance. It argues that divided armies are flawed by design—that the greater the level of military inequality—that is, the more these ethnic groups were subjected to prewar discrimination or repression by the state—the worse a belligerent's expected wartime performance. To flesh out this argument, the chapter first defines inequality and introduces a military inequality coefficient, before turning to the specifics of battlefield performance. Though no consensus exists as to measuring military effectiveness, the chapter offers some ways to measure military performance. Next, the chapter turns to the dangers of military inequality and makes a more protracted argument about why inequality matters. Finally, it provides some background into Project Mars and discusses the research design for this study.

Purpose The purpose of the paper is to set out ideas regarding the use of both first- and second-order cybernetics in reducing global energy-based emissions through energy technology innovation at multiple levels and to discuss necessary production and consumption patterns to facilitate such changes over time. Design/methodology/approach The paper uses a conceptual framework to estimate a national model of energy consumption and production, conceived as embedded hypercubes for different actor levels. The author has developed a model that elaborates on a multi-level ecosystem for low-carbon technology adoption and innovation, embedded within a sustainability transition framework. Findings The paper reviews product–process relationships at multiple levels and grounds the framework in a transition approach. With more contextually conceptualized framework grounded in theory, this research aims to inform future development in the topic area, given the embryonic emergence of advanced cybernetic technologies, by viewing such capabilities at the subsystem level as a unit of analysis. Originality/value The paper will be of interest to firm managers, ecologists and policymakers with a particular interest in system sciences. The framework can be applied for facilitating discussions or for scenario planning.

This introductory chapter provides an overview of the book's main themes. This book explores the state, shape, change, and evolution of Midwestern Jewish cuisine through time. It tracks geographically based culinary recipes and changes made to them through time by presenting and analyzing ones from Midwestern Jewish sources, both kosher and non-kosher. It documents the availability of fruits, vegetables, and other comestibles throughout the Midwest that impacted how and what Jews cooked; and considers the effect of improved preservation and transportation on rural and urban Jewish foodways. Then, it examines the impact on Jewish foodways—the cultural, social, and economic practices relating to the production and consumption of food—of large-scale immigration, relocation, and Americanization efforts during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, paying special attention to the attempts of social and culinary reformers to modify traditional Jewish food preparation and ingredients.

The use of visual representations (VRs) in mathematics is a strongly recommended practice in special education. Although recommended, little is known about special educators’ knowledge of and instructional emphasis about VRs. Therefore, in this study, the authors examined special educators’ own knowledge of and their instructional emphasis with VRs in mathematics for students with disabilities (SWDs) in Grades K-12. A total of 146 teachers (pre- and in-service) responded to an online survey. A mixed methods triangulation research design was utilized. Findings include the following: (a) teachers hold conceptions about VRs and the roles they serve in problem solving; their ideas, however, lack depth and are narrow in perspective; (b) what teachers emphasize about VRs to SWDs tends to match their own conceptions, but the explanations they provide for SWDs need expanding and refinement; and (c) given their narrow conceptions, VRs may be limited to a peripheral role in special educators’ instruction.
