Abstract We study the superconformal index of S-fold theories by using the anti-de Sitter / conformal field theory correspondence. It is known that the index in the large-$N$ limit is reproduced as the contribution of bulk Kaluza–Klein modes. For finite-$N$, D3-branes wrapped around the non-trivial cycle in $\boldsymbol{S}^5/\mathbb{Z}_k$, which corresponds to Pfaffian-like operators, give the corrections of order $q^N$ to the index. We calculate the finite-$N$ corrections by analyzing the fluctuations of wrapped D3-branes. Comparisons to known results show that our formula correctly reproduces the corrections up to errors of order $q^{2N}$.

Abstract We present a new method of deriving shapes of entanglement wedges directly from conformal field theory (CFT) calculations. We point out that a reduced density matrix in holographic CFTs possesses a sharp wedge structure such that inside the wedge we can distinguish two local excitations, while outside we cannot. We can determine this wedge, which we call a CFT wedge, by computing a distinguishability measure. We find that CFT wedges defined by the fidelity or Bures distance as a distinguishability measure coincide perfectly with shadows of entanglement wedges in anti-de Sitter (AdS)/CFT. We confirm this agreement between CFT wedges and entanglement wedges for two-dimensional holographic CFTs where the subsystem is chosen to be an interval or double intervals, as well as higher-dimensional CFTs with a round ball subsystem. On the other hand, if we consider a free scalar CFT, we find that there are no sharp CFT wedges. This shows that sharp entanglement wedges emerge only for holographic CFTs owing to the large-$N$ factorization. We also generalize our analysis to a time-dependent example and to a holographic boundary conformal field theory (AdS/BCFT). Finally, we study other distinguishability measures to define CFT wedges. We observe that some of the measures lead to CFT wedges which slightly deviate from the entanglement wedges in AdS/CFT, and we give a heuristic explanation for this. This paper is an extended version of our earlier letter (arXiv:1908.09939 [hep-th]) and includes various new observations and examples.

We show that a "constructive derivation" of the anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence based on the quantum local renormalization group in large-N quantum field theories consistently provides the a – c holographic Weyl anomaly in d = 4 at the curvature squared order in the bulk action. The consistency of the construction further predicts the form of the metric beta function.

There has recently been a revival of interest in anti-de-Sitter space (AdS), brought about by the conjectured duality between physics in the bulk of AdS and a conformal field theory on the boundary. Since the whole subject of branes, singletons and superconformal field theories on the AdS boundary was an active area of research about ten years ago, we begin with a historical review, including the idea of the "membrane at the end of the universe." We then compare the old and new approaches and discuss some new results on AdS 5 × S5 and AdS 3 × S3.

In the first part of this paper we find supergravity solutions corresponding to branes on worldvolumes of the form Rd×Σ where Σ is a Riemann surface. These theories arise when we wrap branes on holomorphic Riemann surfaces inside K3 or CY manifolds. In some cases the theory at low energies is a conformal field theory with two less dimensions. We find some non-singular supersymmetric compactifications of M-theory down to AdS5. We also propose a criterion for permissible singularities in supergravity solutions. In the second part of this paper, which can be read independently of the first, we show that there are no non-singular Randall-Sundrum or de-Sitter compactifications for large class of gravity theories.

A conformal field theory on the boundary of three-dimensional asymptotic anti-de Sitter spaces which appear as near horizon geometry of D-brane bound states is discussed. It is shown that partition functions of gravitational instantons appear as high and low temperature limits of the partition function of the conformal field theory. The result reproduces phase transition between the anti-de Sitter space and the BTZ black hole in the bulk gravity.

An effective Hamiltonian for the study of the quantum Hall effect is proposed. This Hamiltonian, which includes a "current-current" interaction has the form of a Hamiltonian for a conformal field theory in the large N limit. An order parameter is constructed from which the Hamiltonian may be derived. This order parameter may be viewed as either a collective coordinate for a system of N charged particles in a strong magnetic field; or as a field of spins associated with the cyclotron motion of these particles.

Using a holographic proposal for the geometric entropy we study its behavior in the geometry of Schwarzschild black holes in global AdSp for p = 3, 4, 5. Holographically, the entropy is determined by a minimal surface. On the gravity side, due to the presence of a horizon on the background, generically there are two solutions to the surfaces determining the entanglement entropy. In the case of AdS3, the calculation reproduces precisely the geometric entropy of an interval of length l in a two-dimensional conformal field theory with periodic boundary conditions. We demonstrate that in the cases of AdS4 and AdS5 the sign of the difference of the geometric entropies changes, signaling a transition. Euclideanization implies that various embedding of the holographic surface are possible. We study some of them and find that the transitions are ubiquitous. In particular, our analysis renders a very intricate phase space, showing, for some ranges of the temperature, up to three branches. We observe a remarkable universality in the type of results we obtain from AdS4 and AdS5.

A metric is proposed to explore the noncommutative form of the anti-de Sitter (AdS) space due to quantum effects. It has been proved that the noncommutativity in AdS space induces a single component gravitoelectric field. The holographic Ryu–Takayanagi (RT) algorithm is then applied to compute the entanglement entropy (EE) in dual CFT2. This calculation can be exploited to compute ultraviolet–infrared (UV–IR) cutoff dependent central charge of the certain noncommutative CFT2. This noncommutative computation of the EE can be interpreted in the form of the surface/state correspondence. We have shown that noncommutativity increases the dimension of the effective Hilbert space of the dual conformal field theory (CFT).
