Abstract A cherrybark oak plantation was established on an Upper Coastal Plain creek bottom in southwest Arkansas in 1962. At age 10, treatments of (1) thinning only, (2) thinning and pruning, and (3) a control (no treatment) were applied in three replicates. Repeated thinnings from below occurred in the thinned and thinned/pruned plots at ages 21, 26, and 31. Pruning was applied in the thin/prune plots only once, at age 10. Thinning had significant effects on diameter growth immediately and continued to accelerate diameter growth through age 39, but had no effect on total tree height. Height to live crown was significantly lower for thinned plots than in the control. Pruning appeared to have no effect on diameter, height, or number or height of epicormic branches. Sawtimber volume and accumulated sawtimber production was significantly greater in treatments that received thinning, with potential for greater economic returns. The reader is cautioned that these results may not be indicative of cherrybark oak plantations in the South due to the size of the study area and possible edge effects. South. J. Appl. Abstract Loblolly pine data from thinned and unthinned plantations were used to evaluate the effects of thinning on tree height-diameter relationships. Results showed that thinning positively influences both tree height and diameter growth in loblolly pine plantations. The intensity of the thinning and the time since thinning, along with the inherent site quality, will determine the magnitude and duration of the thinning response. An equation for predicting total tree height from dbh and certain stand characteristics is developed from the data and can be used for predicting tree height in thinned and unthinned plantations. Abstract Background Edge effects can influence species composition and community structure as a result of changes in microenvironment and edaphic variables. We investigated effects of habitat edges on vegetation structure, abundance and body mass of one vulnerable Microcebus species in northwestern Madagascar. We trapped mouse lemurs along four 1000-m transects (total of 2424 trap nights) that ran perpendicular to the forest edge. We installed 16 pairs of 20 m2 vegetation plots along each transect and measured nine vegetation parameters. To determine the responses of the vegetation and animals to an increasing distance to the edge, we tested the fit of four alternative mathematical functions (linear, power, logistic and unimodal) to the data and derived the depth of edge influence (DEI) for all parameters. Results Logistic and unimodal functions best explained edge responses of vegetation parameters, and the logistic function performed best for abundance and body mass of M. ravelobensis. The DEI varied between 50 m (no. of seedlings, no. of liana, dbh of large trees [dbh ≥ 10 cm]) and 460 m (tree height of large trees) for the vegetation parameters, whereas it was 340 m for M. ravelobensis abundance and 390 m for body mass, corresponding best to the DEI of small tree [dbh < 10 cm] density (360 m). Small trees were significantly taller and the density of seedlings was higher in the interior than in the edge habitat. However, there was no significant difference in M. ravelobensis abundance and body mass between interior and edge habitats, suggesting that M. ravelobensis did not show a strong edge response in the study region. Finally, regression analyses revealed three negative (species abundance and three vegetation parameters) and two positive relationships (body mass and two vegetation parameters), suggesting an impact of vegetation structure on M. ravelobensis which may be partly independent of edge effects. Conclusions A comparison of our results with previous findings reveals that edge effects are variable in space in a small nocturnal primate from Madagascar. Such an ecological plasticity could be extremely relevant for mitigating species responses to habitat loss and anthropogenic disturbances.

Seven sites ranging from 15 to 135 km from Mount St. Helens were selected to study the impact of air-fall tephra on the growth of Abiesamabilis (Dougl.) Forbes, A. procera Rehd., Pseudotsugamenziesii (Mirb.) Franco, Tsugaheterophylla (Raf.) Sarg., and T. mertensiana (Bong.) Carr. As tephra depth increased, there was a corresponding increase in visible foliar damage and associated decreases in diameter and height growth. Reduction in diameter growth was greater than reduction in height growth. The reduction in diameter growth approached 50% in both trees and saplings of A. amabilis. Growth reduction in true firs was greater than in associated species. This difference was related to their greater capacity for interception and retention of air-fall tephra. Damage to trees, and resulting growth reductions, were due to tephra coverage of both the foliage and the soil. Coverage of the foliage resulted in foliar damage, foliage abscission and reduction of total tree foliar area, and increased fine root mortality. Tephra coverage of the soil had the potential to restrict oxygen diffusion into the soil. However, soil oxygen concentrations less than 10% were measured only once over a 2-year period.

The comandra blister rust parasite (Cronartiumcomandrae Pk.) causes a serious canker disease of lodgepole pine (Pinuscontorta Dougl. ex Loud. ssp. latifolia (Engelm.) Critch.) in the central Rocky Mountains. The expansion, longevity, and distribution of comandra blister rust cankers were studied by annual monitoring, reconstructing canker histories, and random sampling. In saplings, infections occur throughout the lower 80% of the crown; and branch cankers expand toward the bole at 2.5 cm•year−1, regardless of temperature, age, position, tree size, vigor, or susceptibility to infection. The proportion of branch cankers that develop into stem cankers decreases logistically both with distance from infection site to bole and with time since infection. Fewer than 50% of branch cankers that are farther than 20 cm from the bole or more than 8 years old are expected to establish stem cankers. The proportion of branch cankers that become stem cankers decreases with distance more rapidly for comandra blister rust than for other stem rusts. The mean height of stem cankers increases with total tree height, but cankers are uncommon at the top of the crown and low on the trunk of larger trees. The number of years for a canker to girdle its host equals the diameter of the stem at the center of the canker measured in centimetres. Because girdling cankers develop infrequently, slowly, and predictably, potential losses from comandra blister rust can be reduced by timely and appropriate removal of damaged trees.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the growth and yield of teak (Tectona grandis) stands at different spacing and in different soil classes. Twelve spacing were evaluated in an Inceptisol and Oxisol, in plots with an area of 1,505 or 1,548 m2, arranged in a completely randomized design with nine replicates. The teak trees were measured at 26, 42, 50, and 78 months of age. Total tree height was less affected by spacing. Mean square diameter was greater in wider spacing, whereas basal area and total volume with bark were greater in closer spacing. An increase in volume with bark per tree was observed with the increase of useful area per plant. For teak trees, growth stagnation happens earlier, the growth rate is higher in closer spacing, and the plants grow more in the Inceptisol than in the Oxisol.

The study was carried out in Serbian spruce (Picea omorika Panc/Purkyn?) plantations in the western Serbia. The paper presents results of the analysis of crown development. The following elements were analyzed: total tree height, height of the crown base, absolute and relative crown length, maximal crown diameter, coefficient of crown spreading and degree of crown girth. We discuss approaches to the modeling of tree crown growth and development, growing under favorable environmental and stand conditions, without anomalies in development. In order to establish the relationship between analyzed factors, regression analyses were applied. Data fitting was by the analytic method, by the implementation of Prodan?s functions of growth, linear and parabolic function. Received models can be used for the simulation of various growth and developing processes in forest.

This chapter explains that the mobility of black southerners began increasing in the birth cohorts born immediately after the Civil War. Many of these moves took place within the South. Despite plentiful industrial jobs in the “thousand furnaces” of northern cities at the turn of the twentieth century, the potential wage benefits of settling in the North was dampened by the absence of a migrant network that southern blacks could use to secure employment upon arrival. Large flows of northward migration awaited a period of abnormally high economic returns, which arose during World War I. Circa 1915, northern factories supplying the war effort experienced a surge in labor demand, coupled with a temporary freeze in European immigration, which encouraged northern employers to turn to other sources of labor.

Archaeological site investigations on the South Atlantic Coastal Plain have revealed stratified cultural remains in sand deposits of mixed aeolian and fluvial origins, aeolian sand sheets and dunes, alluvial terraces, and Carolina Bay rims. These sites are typically shallow but have yielded discernible archaeostratigraphy within sand dominated deposits by using luminescence dating (OSL), AMS radiocarbon dating, and close interval sediment sampling. Periods of site burial are linked to regional and global paleoclimate records, including Bond events, and provide broader reconstructions for human ecology and periods of site burial.
