Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of two dietary feeding periods of tiamulin in combination with chlortetracycline for the control and treatment of swine respiratory and enteric disease and subsequent growth performance. The study used 1,151 commercial crossbred barrows and gilts in a randomized complete block design. Pigs were housed in single-sex groups of 25 at a floor space of 0.69 m2/pig. There were two dietary treatments: 1) nonmedicated controls and 2) 39 mg/kg tiamulin + 441 mg/kg chlortetracycline (TIACTC) fed from days 7 to 20 and again days 49 to 62. There were 23 pens per treatment group. Daily observations were made throughout the study, including the number of pigs in each pen coughing, with diarrhea, or showing signs of lameness as well as the number of pigs in each pen requiring individual therapy treatment for each symptom. Pigs were weighed as a group on days 0 (for allocation purposes), 7, 21, 49, 61, 89 (start of marketing), and at time of slaughter. Within pen, animals were selected by visual appraisal and sent for slaughter over 4 wk to a commercial slaughter facility where HCW was collected and used to calculate carcass yield. There was no difference (P > 0.05) between treatments for the incidence of morbidity or mortality. Pigs fed TIACTC tended to have less coughing observations (P = 0.10) and less diarrhea observations (P = 0.08) during the study period, and had less observations of lameness (P < 0.001) and required less treatments than nonmedicated controls (P < 0.001). For the overall study period, pigs fed TIACTC had greater (P < 0.05) total BW gain (43.3 kg greater/pen) and greater (P < 0.05) ADG and ADFI than controls. There was no effect (P > 0.05) of treatment on G:F. Overall, pigs fed TIACTC weighed 1.3 kg heavier (P < 0.05) at the start of marketing and completed the study with an overall BW advantage of 1.6 kg (P < 0.05) compared to controls. The difference between treatments for live BW increased with marketing group (1.0 kg in marketing group 1 and 3.3 kg in marketing group 4). Pigs fed TIACTC had greater (P < 0.05) HCW (1.0 kg) than controls; however, there was no difference (P > 0.05) between treatments for carcass yield. The results of this study suggest that feeding TIACTC was successful at controlling respiratory and enteric disease and, consequently, improved growth performance and carcass weight of grow-finish pigs.

Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of dietary inclusion of narasin or zinc bacitracin on the growth performance and carcass characteristics of finishing pigs sent for slaughter using a 3-phase marketing strategy. The study used 2,219 crossbred pigs in a randomized complete block design (blocking factor = start date) with 3 dietary treatments: 1) Control (no feed additive), 2) 15 mg/kg narasin (Skycis, Elanco Animal Health, Greenfield, IN), and 3) 28 mg/kg zinc bacitracin (Albac, Zoetis, Parsippany, NJ). Pigs were housed in single-sex pens of 25 pigs in a commercial wean-to-finish facility and there were 30 pen-replicates of each dietary treatment. All pigs were weighed as a group (i.e., pen) on d 0 (start of experimental feeding period), 77, 91, and 105 (end) of study. Pigs had ad libitum access to feed and water throughout the study period; all feed additions to the feeder were recorded. Pigs were sent for slaughter according to the following marketing strategy: 1) after 77 d on study, the heaviest 20% of each pen was sent for slaughter (Phase 1), 2) after 91 d on study, the next heaviest 48% of each pen were sent for slaughter (Phase 2), and 3) after 105 d on study, the remaining 32% of each pen was sent for slaughter (Phase 3). Pigs within each pen were selected for slaughter by visual appraisal of weight and shipped to a commercial slaughter facility where standard carcass measurements (HCW, LM depth, and backfat depth) were measured. Feeding narasin increased (P < 0.05) final live BW (1.3 kg) and overall ADG (1.1%) compared to the other treatments, which were similar (P > 0.05). Dietary treatment did not impact (P > 0.05) overall G:F. Feeding narasin increased (P < 0.05) HCW (1.4 kg) and carcass yield (0.3% units) compared to the other dietary treatments, which were similar (P > 0.05) for these traits. Overall, these results demonstrate that narasin-fed pigs had improved overall growth rate, HCW, and carcass yield compared to controls or pigs fed zinc bacitracin.

The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of replacing corn with brown rice on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, carcass characteristics, and gut microbiota of growing and finishing pigs. A total of 100 growing pigs (23.80 ± 2.96 kg BW; 10 weeks of age) were randomly allotted to 4 dietary treatments (5 pigs/pen; 5 replicates/treatment) in a randomized complete block design (block = BW) as follows: corn-soybean meal basal diet (CON) and replacing corn with 50% (GBR50), 75% (GBR75), and 100% (GBR100) of ground brown rice. Each trial phase was for 6 weeks. During the growing period, there were no differences on growth performance and nutrient digestibility among dietary treatments. Similarly, no differences were found on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and carcass characteristics of pigs during the finishing period among dietary treatments. As a result of the beta diversity analysis, microbial populations were not clustered between CON and GBR100 during the growing phase, but clustered into two distinct groups of CON and GBR100 during the finishing phase. In conclusion, brown rice can be added to the diets of growing-finishing pigs by replacing corn up to 100% without negatively affecting growth performance of the pigs; additionally, this may have an effect on changes in pig intestinal microbiota if continued for a long time.

Abstract Our objective was to determine the effects of feeding different analyzed calcium to phosphorus (Ca:P) ratios on performance of growing-finishing pigs from 26 to 127-kg. A total of 1,134 barrows and gilts (PIC 359×Camborough, initial BW 26.3 ± 0.71 kg) were used in a 110-d growth trial with 27 pigs per pen and 7 pens per treatment in a randomized complete block design. The 6 dietary treatments were formulated to contain 0:75:1, 1.00:1, 1.25:1, 1.50:1, 1.75:1, and 2.00:1 analyzed Ca:P ratio. All diets were corn-soybean meal-based and were formulated to contain adequate standardized total tract digestible P (approximately 122% of NRC 2012 estimates) for the weight range in all 4 dietary phases. Treatments were achieved by increasing calcium carbonate at the expense of corn while maintaining a constant level of monocalcium phosphate. Experimental data were analyzed using generalized linear and nonlinear mixed models with pen as the experimental unit. Increasing analyzed Ca:P ratio increased (quadratic, P < 0.05) ADG, ADFI, and final BW. Feed efficiency (G:F) was relatively similar across analyzed Ca:P ratios of 0.75:1 to 1.75:1 but worsened (quadratic, P < 0.05) at the highest ratio of 2.00:1. Hot carcass weight (HCW) and carcass ADG increased (quadratic, P < 0.05) while carcass yield decreased (quadratic, P < 0.05) with increasing analyzed Ca:P ratio. Bone mineralization increased (quadratic, P < 0.05) with increasing analyzed Ca:P ratio. For ADG, ADFI, G:F, and bone ash, the quadratic polynomial model demonstrated the best fit. The maximum responses in ADG, ADFI, G:F, HCW, and bone ash were estimated at 1.38:1, 1.49:1, 1.29:1, 1.25:1, and 1.93:1 analyzed Ca:P ratio, respectively. In conclusion, for growing-finishing pigs from 26 to 127-kg fed diets adequate in STTD P, the analyzed Ca:P ratio to maximize growth performance and HCW criteria ranged from 1.25:1 to 1.49:1. A higher analyzed Ca:P ratio, estimated at 1.93:1, was required to maximize bone mineralization.

Abstract A total of 2,673 mixed sex pigs (DNA 600 × PIC 1050; initially 21.4 kg BW) were used in a 117-d study to evaluate the effects of increasing SID Lysine:Calorie NE ratio on the growth performance and carcass characteristics of DNA sired pigs. Pens of pigs (30 pigs/pen) were blocked by BW and location and allotted to 1 of 4 dietary treatments with 18 pens per treatment. Treatments were 90%, 95%, 100%, or 105% of the 2016 PIC recommended SID Lysine:Calorie NE ratio for finishing gilts. Data were analyzed as a randomized complete-block design with pen as the experimental unit. Overall (d 0-117), increasing Lysine:Calorie NE tended to improve ADG (Linear; P = 0.077) and G:F (Linear; P = 0.053). Although there was an increase in ADG with increasing SID Lysine:Calorie NE, there was no evidence for a difference (P &gt; 0.100) in final BW. The lack of BW response is most likely due to the lower (Quadratic; P &lt; 0.008) removal rate as SID Lysine:Calorie NE increased. Carcass ADG (Linear; P &lt; 0.064) tended to improve as SID Lysine: Calorie NE increased. An improvement in carcass G:F (Quadratic; P &lt; 0.004) was observed as SID Lysine:Calorie NE increased to 100% PIC (2016) recommendations, with little improvement observed thereafter. No significant differences were observed in carcass yield, loin depth, back fat, or % lean. These results suggests that DNA sired pigs fed increasing SID Lysine:Calorie NE ratios tended to have improved growth performance with no impact on carcass quality.

Abstract A total of 1,944 mixed sex growing-finishing pigs (PIC; 337×1050; initial BW of 22.5±0.53 kg) were used in a 131-d growth trial to determine the effects of increasing levels of xylanase in adequate diets on grow-finish pig growth performance and carcass characteristics. The 6 dietary treatments consisted of corn, soybean meal, and dried distillers grains with solubles with added xylanase (Belfeed B 1100 MP; Jefo Nutrition Inc., Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec) formulated to: 0, 5, 10, 20, 40, and 75 of enzymatic activity for xylanase (IU/kg) with 27 pigs per pen and 12 replicates per treatment. Data were analyzed as a randomized complete block design using lmer function in lme4 package in R with pen considered as the experimental unit, body weight as blocking factor, and treatment as a fixed effect. From d 0 to 70, there was a tendency (quadratic, R=0.068) for average daily gain (ADG) to decrease and then increase with increasing added xylanase, but there was no evidence (R &gt;0.10) of differences for average daily feed intake (ADFI) and feed efficiency (G/F). From d 70 to 131 and overall, there was no evidence of difference (R &gt;0.10) observed for ADG, ADFI, and F/G. There was no evidence for difference (R &gt;0.10) between treatments for number of pigs receiving injectable treatments or mortalities. For carcass traits, increasing xylanase increased then decreased (quadratic, R=0.010) percentage carcass yield. Also, as xylanase increased, percentage lean decreased (linear, R=0.038) and backfat marginally increased (linear, R=0.066). In conclusion, adding increasing levels of xylanase in nutrient adequate diets did not influence growth performance or mortality but did improve carcass yield when intermediate levels were fed.

Abstract Our objective was to determine the effects of feeding different neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and standardized ileal digestible (SID) lysine (Lys) levels on performance of growing-finishing pigs from 30- to 130-kg. A total of 2,016 barrows and gilts (PIC 280×Camborough, initial BW of 29.6±0.53 kg) were allotted to a randomized complete block design with a 2×2 factorial arrangement. Dietary treatments (Table 1) consisted with two NDF levels (13% or 20%) and two SID Lys curves (PIC2008 or PIC2016). There were 21 mixed-sex pigs per pen, and 24 pens per treatment. The experiment diets were fed in 3 phases. Wheat, wheat by-products, peas, and canola oil were used with NRC (2012) loading values to achieve treatments, and all diets were formulated to be iso-caloric (2,420 kcal NE/kg). Experimental data were analyzed using generalized linear mixed models with pen as the experimental unit. Increasing NDF level resulted in a reduction (P&lt; 0.05) in average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake, hot carcass weight, carcass yield, carcass ADG, and backfat depth (Table 2), and tended to decrease percentage of removals and mortality (P=0.10). Pigs fed PIC2016 Lys curve had greater ADG and carcass ADG as compared to those fed PIC2008 Lys curve (P&lt; 0.05). There were NDF×Lys interactions (P&lt; 0.10) for ADG, gain to feed ratio (G:F), carcass ADG, and carcass G:F. These response criteria were improved for pigs fed PIC2016 Lys curve compared to those fed PIC2008 Lys curve when NDF level was 13%; while no evidence of differences was observed at 20% NDF. Results indicate that increasing NDF level from 13 to 20% deteriorate performance of 30- to 130- kg pigs; and the improved growth performance of pigs fed PIC2016 Lys curve as compared to those fed PIC2008 Lys curve was only observed when lower NDF level was presented.

Abstract A total of 2,158 crossbred pigs was used to evaluate the effects of feeding 7.4 mg/kg ractopamine hydrochloride (RAC) on the growth performance and carcass characteristics of heavy-weight finishing pigs sent to slaughter using a 3-phase marketing strategy. The study was performed from 121.0 ± 4.28 kg to 144.5 ± 4.73 BW using a randomized complete block design (blocking factor was d of start on test) with 2 treatments (0 vs. 7.4 mg/kg RAC). Pigs were housed in a commercial wean-to-finish facility in groups of approximately 25 (44 groups/treatment), with ad libitum access to feed and water throughout the study, and pen weights of pigs were recorded at the start (d 0), and on d 7, 21, and 35 of study. Pigs were sent for slaughter according to the following marketing strategy: 1) after 7 d on RAC, the heaviest 16% of each pen was sent for slaughter (Phase 1), 2) after 21 d on RAC, the next 40% of each pen was sent for slaughter (Phase 2), and 3) after 35 d on RAC, the remaining 44% of each pen was sent for slaughter (Phase 3). Pigs were selected for slaughter by visual appraisal and shipped to a commercial facility where standard carcass measurements (HCW, LM depth, and backfat depth) were measured. Overall, feeding RAC increased (P &lt; 0.001) ADG (18.8%) and G:F (23.7%) compared to the control, but lowered (P &lt; 0.001) ADFI (3.3%). In addition, feeding RAC increased (P &lt; 0.001) HCW (3.9 kg), carcass yield (0.7% units), LM depth (5.0%), and predicted lean content (1.0% units), and reduced backfat depth (6.3% lower) compared to controls. With each subsequent phase of marketing, the magnitude of improvements in response to feeding RAC decreased for ADG (43.1, 20.9, and −3.1% for Phase 1, 2, and 3, respectively) and G:F (37.5, 25.8, and 6.4% for Phase 1, 2, and 3, respectively); however, improvements in HCW (1.6, 4.5, and 4.2 kg for Phase 1, 2, and 3, respectively), carcass yield (0.2, 0.6, and 0.9% units for Phase 1, 2, and 3, respectively), LM depth (2.3, 5.7, and 5.2% for Phase 1, 2, and 3, respectively), and predicted lean content (0.2, 1.0, and 1.3% units for Phase 1, 2, and 3, respectively) generally increased from feeding RAC. These results suggest that while improvements in growth performance from feeding RAC will generally decline after 21 d of feeding, improvements in carcass traits, particularly carcass yield and lean content, will continue with feeding RAC until d 35.

Abstract Our objective was to determine the effects of increasing standardized ileal digestible (SID) lysine (Lys) levels on growth performance and carcass characteristics of growing-finishing pigs. A total of 1,013 barrows and gilts (PIC337×Camborough, initially 29.2±0.21 kg) were used in a 112-d growth trial with 25 or 26 pigs per pen and 13 pens per treatment in a randomized complete block design. Diets were corn-soybean meal (SBM)-dried distillers grains with solubles-based, and treatments were achieved through the inclusion of SBM at the expense of corn. Diets were fed in 6 phases and formulated to be iso-caloric within each phase. Treatments consisted of: 1) Low Lys: overall dietary SID Lys levels as 87% of PIC2016 Lys requirement; 2) Medium Lys: overall dietary SID Lys levels as 97% of PIC2016 Lys requirement; 3) High Lys: overall dietary SID Lys levels as 106% of PIC2016 Lys requirement. Experimental data were analyzed using generalized linear mixed models with pen as the experimental unit. Pigs fed High or Medium Lys had greater (P&lt; 0.01) average daily gain compared to pigs fed Low Lys. There was no evidence (P &gt;0.10) for the difference between treatments for average daily feed intake. Pigs fed High Lys had the greatest (P&lt; 0.01) feed efficiency (G:F) followed by Medium Lys, with pigs fed Low Lys with the lowest G:F. Pigs fed High or Medium Lys had greater (P&lt; 0.01) hot carcass weight, loin depth, and lean percentage compared to pigs fed Low Lys. There was no evidence (P &gt;0.10) for treatment effect on carcass yield and backfat. Pigs fed Low Lys had greater removal and mortality rate than those fed High or Medium Lys (P&lt; 0.01). In conclusion, increasing SID Lys over PIC2016 recommendations through increasing SBM levels resulted in increased growth performance and carcass characteristics, and reduced removal and mortality rate of 29- to- 129 kg pigs.

Abstract Arginine plays an important role in regulating arginine-nitric oxide synthase pathway, regulating lipid metabolism, and upregulating the mRNA levels of genes involved in fat synthesis in muscle in animals, and can therefore improve feed utilization for protein accretion. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of supplementation of different concentrations of L-arginine on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and meat quality in finishing pigs. A total of 120 crossbred [(Landrace × Yorkshire) × Duroc] pigs with an average initial body weight (BW) of 53.80 ± 1.86 kg were used in this 10-week feeding trial. The pigs were randomly allotted to 1 of 3 dietary treatments (5 pigs/pen and 8 replicates/treatment) in a randomized complete block design according to their sex (2 gilts and 3 barrows) and BW. Dietary treatments included: 1) CON, corn-soybean meal based basal diet (containing 13.81 MJ/kg metabolic energy and 0.95% lysine for entire experimental period); 2) LA0.5, CON + 0.5 g/kg L-arginine; 3) LA1.0, CON + 1.0 g/kg L-arginine. Individual body weight was measured initially and at the end of 5th and 10th week, feed consumption was recorded on pen basis during the experiment to determine growth performance. Meat samples were randomly taken from each pen (2 pigs per pen, 1 gilt and 1 barrow; 16 pigs per treatment) for determination of meat quality. All data were analysed using linear and quadratic contrast (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC, USA). The result showed that L-arginine did not affect pig growth performance and nutrient digestibility. However, dietary L-arginine supplementation linearly increased (P&lt; 0.05) muscle marbling score, while linearly decreasing (P&lt; 0.05) cooking loss and drip loss of pork muscle (Table 1). Results of present study demonstrated that 1.0 g/kg L-arginine would be beneficial in improving the meat quality in finishing pigs.

Abstract A total of 1,890 growing-finishing pigs (PIC; 359 × 1050; initially 27.1 kg) were used in a 124-d growth trial to compare the effects of pigs fed diets with high-protein dried distillers grains (HPDDG) or conventional dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) on growth performance and carcass characteristics. Conventional DDGS contained 29.0% CP, 0.48% standardized ileal digestible (SID) Lys and 9.2% oil, whereas HPDDG contained 39.3% CP, 0.68% SID Lys and 11.1% oil. All diets were formulated on an equal SID Lys-basis with diets containing HPDDG having less soybean meal than diets with conventional DDGS. There were 27 pigs per pen and 14 pens per treatment. Treatments were arranged in a 2×2 + 1 factorial with main effects of DDG source (conventional DDGS or HPDDG) and level (15 or 30%). A corn-soybean meal-based diet served as the control and allowed linear and quadratic level effects to be determined within each DDG source. Pens were assigned to treatments in a randomized complete block design with initial weight as the blocking factor. Data were analyzed using lme4 package in R (version 3.5.2) with pen as experimental unit. Overall, there were no differences observed in ADG between pigs fed either DDG source. Pigs fed HPDDG had decreased (P&lt; 0.001) ADFI and increased (P&lt; 0.001) G:F compared with those fed conventional DDGS. Increasing either conventional DDGS or HPDDG decreased carcass yield and HCW (linear, P&lt; 0.02); however, there were no differences between pigs fed HPDDG or conventional DDGS. Iodine value (IV) was greater (P&lt; 0.001) in pigs fed HPDDG than conventional DDGS, and IV increased (linear, P&lt; 0.02) with increasing DDG. These data suggest that pigs fed HPDDG had greater G:F and IV compared with pigs fed conventional DDGS, probably due to the difference in oil content.
