Population screening may harm quality of life (QoL), and traditional health-related QoL tools could be inadequate to evaluate this risk. Two global and generic QoL instruments were developed for studying the QoL consequences of screening (SCREENQOL), and QoL variation in a normal population (SEQOL). SCREENQOL and SEQOL (Self-Evaluation of Quality of Life Questionnaire) are self-administered questionnaires with items rated on 5-point Likert scales. SCREENQOL consists of 21 items measuring QoL across 6 different dimensions based upon validated QoL questionnaires. SEQOL consists of 317 items measuring QoL across 8 different dimensions, based on an integrative theory of QoL, a theoretical framework from a Danish QoL survey involving 7,222 persons 31 to 33 years old. For further validation, SEQOL and SCREENQOL were sent to 2,460 persons 18 to 88 years old randomly selected from the Danish Central Person Register together with Nottingham Health Profile (NHP) and Sickness Impact Profile (SIP). For SCREENQOL and SEQOL, test-retest reliability correlation was both >0.8, Cronbachs alpha was 0.65 and 0.75, correlation (r) to NHP was 0.67 and 0.49, to SIP 0.46 and 0.27, respectively (p

ABSTRACT Objective: to analyze the relationship between student participation in associations and the way they perceive their quality of life. Methods: a study of one hundred and sixty students of Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) Dentistry course belonging to the first, fifth, eighth and tenth semesters in Florianopolis, SC, Brazil. The theoretical basis is the Public Health approach, that, under the wider concept of health, considers associations as health promoters. A sociodemographic questionnaire, a questionnaire on associativism and the WHOQOL-Bref were used for data collection. Results: the results indicate that the participation of Dentistry students in associations improves self-evaluation of quality of life, satisfaction in personal relationships and reduces the frequency of negative feelings. Conclusion: students who participate in voluntary associations are associated with a better quality of life, promoting a more adequate professional formation. In this way, the participation of students in associations should be stimulated by the University. This perspective of analysis values social aspects in the perspective of health and can be a pioneering study in a field where there is still much to be studied, and can bring substantial contributions to the field of collective health and health as a whole.

ABSTRACTOld age is a priori a vulnerable stage of the lifecourse. Quality of life can be expected to decline in older age due to loss, isolation, and declining cognitive and physical abilities. The purpose of this study was to investigate the distribution, prevalence and trajectory of life satisfaction (LS) as a measure of quality of life among Swiss elderly women. We also assessed the impact of different social determinants on LS within the age categories of the ‘young old’ and the ‘old old’ across different cohorts. Using the Swiss Household Panel survey data, analyses of LS distribution and trajectories were conducted for 1,402 women aged 65–84 years. About 50 per cent of elderly women in Switzerland were very satisfied with their lives. The mean LS score and the prevalence of satisfied women were lower in more recent cohorts of identical ages. However, their LS remained more stable over ageing than was the case in former cohorts. High education, satisfaction with income, social support, living with a partner and good self-perceived health were all positive and significant predictors of LS. Longitudinal analyses allowed the ageing process net of cohort and period effects to be disentangled and the assessment of the influence of both social determinants and within-individual psychological traits on the self-evaluation of LS.

The aim of study was to evaluate the change quality of life of ostomy patients after reconstructive rehabilitation treatment. The study was performed in two Lithuanian‘s sanatoriums. The study was made in two stages. We questioner 40 patients, who arrived to sanatoriums for rehabilitation after ostomy operation. Patient‘s were asked to answer the questionnaires in the first day of stay and 3 month after operation. Questionnaires: Ostomate Quality of Life (QOL) Survey and 15 supplementary question were used. The results of the study show that after three months following ostomy operation patient‘s quality of life improves significantly. The results of the study show that stress level was significantly lower (77,5 percent) in three months after having an intestine stoma operation, physical condition got better (80 percent), psychological state (75 percent), self-evaluation (72,5 percent), sexuality (52,5 percent), activeness has risen as well (85 percent) (p<0,05). Patients education began in a hospital and is continued at the sanatorium. Ostomy patients were introduced about changing the colostomy pouches and parastomal skin care. It is important to note that at the sanatorium the majority of ostomy patients receive information about nutrition peculiarities. Conclusions. The quality of life of ostomy patients improved significantly in many areas after reconstructive rehabilitation treatment.

An interesting set of findings has emerged from the literature regarding schizotypy. Individuals with psychometric schizotypy self-report pathology in certain neuropsychological, affective experiential, expressive and olfactory abilities and subjective quality of life at levels between one and two standard deviations more severe than their non-schizotypal peers; a level often similar to that seen in chronic schizophrenia. Objectively however, individuals with psychometric schizotypy do not show concomitant impairments in these domains. This “subjective-objective” disjunction is remarkable in that samples are largely drawn from college settings; thus likely reflecting the healthiest individuals within the schizophrenia-spectrum. We propose that this disjunction can be conceptualized as a “cognitive bias”, and that it reflects a dysfunction in the systems underlying reasoning and self-evaluation. In this article, we lay out evidence underlying the subjective-objective disjunction and discuss potential methodological and psychological issues that may explain this phenomenon.

Background. Trunk deformity is an important manifestation of idiopathic scoliosis (IS). Patients’ perception of spinal deformity and its impact on their quality of life (QoL) are important aspects of scoliosis treatment. The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between radiographic parameters (Cobb angle), clinical parameters (angle of trunk rotation, ATR), and the type of conservative treatment used vs the perception of trunk aesthetics as well as QoL in IS patients. Material and methods. The study enrolled 90 subjects (68 females, 22 males) diagnosed with IS (age: 9-18 years, 14.3± 2.1; Cobb angle 10-66°, 22.2°±12.2; ATR 2-20°, 7.6°±3.9). The study group was divided into (1) patients treated with bracing and physiotherapy (n=35) and (2) subjects undergoing physiotherapy alone (n=55). The perception of trunk deformity was analysed with the TAPS visual scale. QoL was measured with the Polish version of the SRS-22 questionnaire. Results. The study showed that the patients’ perception of their trunk aesthetics significantly worsened with increasing Cobb angle (TAPS, rS= -0.327, p<0.01) and ATR (TAPS, rS= -0.228, p<0.05) values. Moreover, higher ATR values significantly decreased the patients’ QoL (SRS-22, rS= -0.232, p<0.05). Bracing significantly worsened the patients’ perception of aesthetics and QoL (TAPS, 3.2±0.8 vs 3.8±0.6, p<0.05; SRS-22, 3.9±0.4 vs 4.0±0.4, p<0.05 for patients treated with bracing and physiotherapy alone, respectively). Conclusions. 1. The magnitude of scoliosis, angle of trunk rotation, and bracing leads to worsen perception of trunk aesthetics and quality of life. 2. The curvature angle, angle of trunk rotation, bracing, female sex, and age are all associated with a worse perception of trunk aesthetics and quality of life. Self-evaluation of trunk aesthetics and quality of life do not depend on the type of scoliosis. 3. In planning the management of idiopathic scoliosis, one should take into account the impact of spinal deformity on worse patient-rated body aesthetics.

We set up a study to analyze quality of life and social adaptation in a group of women suffering from fibromyalgia.Patient inclusion from 1st March to 30th June 2010. An especially designed questionnaire was used for the study, together with Short-Form-36 Health Survey (SF36), Family Apgar questionnaire, Duke-UNC Functional Social Support (Duke-UNC 11) questionnaire, and Social Adaptation Self-evaluation Scale (SASS). SPSS was used for statistical analysis.Following explanation of purpose of our study and confidentiality agreement, 35 women voluntarily joined our study. Mean age was 52.2 years standard deviation (SD) 7.17. 82,9% had children (mean 2.03 and SD 0.94); 85.7% of patients acknowledged coping with fibromyalgia “badly” or “very badly”; 60% acknowledged that their illness affected their families “severely” or “critically”; 94.3% acknowledged their quality of life affected “much” or “very much”; and 85.7% of patients had their social relationships “much” or “very much” affected. 82.9% of our group of patients was under psychiatric treatment. SF36 scored an average of 27.85 on the physical functioning subscale (SD 19.93); physical role 6.42 (SD 18.53); pain 16.64 (SD 13.7); social functioning 32.14 (SD 21.92); mental health 33.14 (SD 19.0); emotional role 15.23 (SD 30.61); vitality 16.28 (SD 18.60) and general health perception 16.71 (SD 14.54). Family Apgar scored 7.34 (SD 2.53). Duke-UNC 11 scored 35.17 (SD 11.34). Finally, SASS scored 31.32 (SD 7.59).In view of the results, women suffering from fibromyalgia showed severe changes in all parameters analyzed, social adaptation being very much impaired.
