Some aspects of the physics of the Moon

The development of the study of the Moon falls into three distinct phases. The Moon’s orbit provided a critical test of Newtonian theory, and observation of the motion of the Moon was a central problem in astronomy for over 2½ centuries. The discrepancies between this so-called ‘theory of the Moon’ and its observed motion yielded most important results: the secular and irregular changes in the Earth’s rotation rate, the evolution of the Moon’s orbit through geological time and the internal distribution of density within the Moon. The subject of the Moon’s motion remains today a lively one with many unsolved problems: laser ranging to the Moon provides a new technique for their solution. The study of the evolution of the Moon’s surface started with the famous paper by G. K. Gilbert in 1893 when, for the first time, clear evidence was produced that the craters had an impact origin. The recognition that the Moon’s surface is extremely old- little changed because of the absence of the forces of erosion so important in the terrestrial biosphere-provided a strong impetus for the develop­ment of the accretion theory of the origin of the Earth and planets. From the study of the frequency distribution of craters, dating of the lunar surface has developed and the understanding of the evolution of the surface much improved by the application of the principles of geology.

This year marks not only the twenty-fifth anniversary of the first manned landing on the Moon ( Apollo 11 ) but also the thirty-fifth anniversary of the first planetary missions. The latter was the Soviet Luna 1 and 2 carrying magnetometers to test whether the Moon possessed a global magnetic field. Luna 1 passed the Moon but Luna 2 crash landed, both showed that the Moon had no magnetic field as large as 50 or 100 y (1 y = 10 -5 G = 10 -9 T). Such an experiment had been proposed by S. Chapman ( Nature 160, 395 (1947)) to test a speculative hypothesis concerning magnetic fields of cosmic bodies by P. M. S. Blackett ( Nature 159, 658 (1947)). Chapman’s suggestion was greeted by general amusement: 12 years later it was accomplished. Also two years after the launch of Sputnik 1 in 1957, Luna 3 was launched and for the first time viewed the far side of the Moon on 9 October, 1959. Laboratories from many countries were invited by NASA to take part in the analysis of rocks returned from the Apollo missions and later from the Soviet automated return of cores from the lunar regolith. British laboratories were very active in this work, and a review of the results of the new understanding of the Moon as a result of space missions formed the subject of a Royal Society Discussion Meeting in 1975 (published in Phil. Trans. R. Soc. Lond . A 285). British laboratories received samples from the automated Soviet missions that took cores from the regolith and returned them to Earth. Work on Luna 16 and 20 samples were published in Phil. Trans. R. Soc. Lond . A 284 131-177 (1977) and on Luna 24 in Phil. Trans. R. Soc. Lond . A 297 1-50 (1979).

Ever since the time of Newton, his explanation of the general phenomena of the tides by means of the action of the moon and the sun has been assented to by all philosophers who have given their attention to the subject. But even up to the present day this general explanation has not been pursued into its results in detail, so as to show its bearing on the special phenomena of particular places,—to connect the actual tides of all the different parts of the world,—and to account for their varieties and seeming anomalies. With regard to this alone, of all the consequences of the law of universal gravitation, the task of bringing the developed theory into comparison with multiplied and extensive observations is still incomplete; we might almost say, is still to be begun. Daniel Bernoulli, in his Prize Dissertation of 1740, deduced from the Newtonian theory certain methods for the construction of tide tables, which agree with the methods still commonly used. More recently Laplace turned his attention to this subject; and by treating the tides as a problem of the oscillations rather than of the equilibrium of fluids, undoubtedly introduced the correct view of the real operation of the forces; but it does not appear that in this way he has obtained any consequences to which Newton’s mode of considering the subject did not lead with equal certainty and greater simplicity; moreover by confounding, in the course of his calculations, the quantities which he designates by λ and λ', the epochs of the solar and lunar tide (Méc. Cél. vol. ii. p. 232. 291.), he has thrown an obscurity on the most important differences of the tides of different places, as Mr. Lubbock has pointed out.

This given article reveals the topicality not only of destructive, but also of constructive, as well as hybrid conflicts. Practically it has been done for the first time. It also describes the history of the formation of both foreign and domestic social conflictology. At the same time, the chronology of the development of the latter is restored and presented objectively, in full, taking into account the contribution of those researchers who actually stood at its origins. The article deals with the essence of the socio-psychological approach to understanding conflicts. The subject of social conflictology includes the regularities of their occurrence and manifestation at various levels, spheres and conditions, including normal, complicated and extreme ones. Social conflictology includes the theory and practice of diagnosing, resolving, and resolving social conflicts. It analyzes the difficulties that occur in defining the concept, structure, dynamics, and classification of social conflicts. Therefore, it is no accident that the most important task is to create a full-fledged theory of social conflicts. Without this, it is impossible to talk about effective settlement and resolution of social conflicts. Social conflictology is an integral part of conflictology. There is still a lot of work to be done, both in theory and in application, for its complete design. At present, there is an urgent need to develop conflict-related competence not only of professionals, but also for various groups of the population.

Abstract This contribution intends to draw attention to one of the most significant monuments of medieval Ravenna: the church of Santa Maria in Porto Fuori, which was destroyed during the Second World War. Until now, scholars have focused on the pictorial cycle known through photographs and attributed to the painter Pietro da Rimini. However, the architecture of the building has not been the subject of systematic studies. For the first time, this essay reconstructs the fourteenth-century architectural structure of the church, the apse of which was rebuilt by 1314. The data that led to the virtual restitution of the choir and the related rood screen are the basis for new reflections on the accesses to the apse area, on the pilgrimage flows, and on the view of the frescoes.

The possible presence of very large petroleum and natural gas reserves in the area beneath the North Sea is currently the subject of intense investigation. If confirmed, as seems likely in at least some localities, this occurrence will raise legal problems of considerable interest and complexity. For the North Sea is not merely an oilfield covered by water: for centuries it has been one of the world's major fishery regions and the avenue to and from the world's busiest seaports. Thus all three of the present principal uses of the sea—fishing, navigation, and the exploitation of submarine resources—promise to meet for the first time on a large scale in an area where all are of major importance. The process of reconciling the various interests at stake will provide the first thoroughgoing test of the adequacy and acceptability of the general principles laid down in the 1958 Geneva Convention on the Continental Shelf and should add greatly to the practice and precedents available in this developing branch of the law. In the present article an attempt is made to review some of the geographical and economic considerations involved in the North Sea situation, to note some of the technical and legal developments that have already taken place, and to consider these elements in the light of the various interests and legal principles concerned.

SummaryThe Devonian brachiopod Tropidoleptus is recognized for the first time in South Africa. It is present in the lower part of the Witteberg Group at four widely separated localities. Data regarding the stratigraphical range of the genus elsewhere, combined with information on recently described fossil plants and vertebrates from underlying strata of the upper Bokkeveld Group, suggest that a Frasnian or even Givetian age is reasonable for the lower part of the Witteberg Group. The recognition of Tropidoleptus in a shallow water, near-shore, molluscan association, at the top of the South African marine Devonian sequence, is similar to its occurrence in Bolivia, and suggests a common Malvinokaffric Realm history of shallowing, prior to later Devonian or early Carboniferous non-marine sedimentation. It is noteworthy that Tropidoleptus is now known to occur in ecologically suitable environments around the Atlantic, but is absent from these same environments in Asia and Australia. Tropidoleptus is an excellent example of dispersal in geological time — first appearing in northern Europe and Nova Scotia, then elsewhere in eastern North America and North Africa, followed by South America and South Africa, while continuing in North America.

Perhaps more importantly, what to teach the undergraduate whose only experience with political science, and the formal study of politics, will be the introduction they receive in our classes?Owing to the peculiarities of our discipline, the “Introduction to Political Science” class is often just that: a tour through all the major gardens in the discipline, describing to students what is done among scholars and practicioners in the various fields, giving them an overall view of what we do, how we do it, and in the process perhaps making a case for the significance of our discipline, our research, and perhaps even the subject itself — politics.

In the 18th century, as many as 300 German-language plays were produced with the military and its contact and friction with civil society serving as focus of the dramatic events. The immense public interest these plays attracted feeds not least on the fundamental social structural change that was brought about by the establishment of standing armies. In his historico-cultural literary study, Tilman Venzl shows how these military dramas literarily depict complex social processes and discuss the new problems in an affirmative or critical manner. For the first time, the findings of the New Military History are comprehensively included in the literary history of the 18th century. Thus, the example of selected military dramas – including Lessing's Minna von Barnhelm and Lenz's Die Soldaten – reveals the entire range of variety characterizing the history of both form and function of the subject.
