The well-known Taylor cylinder impact test, which follows the impact of a flat-ended cylindrical rod onto a rigid stationary anvil, is conducted over a range of impact speeds for two polymers, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and polyetheretherketone (PEEK). In previous work, experiments and a model were developed to capture the deformation behaviour of the cylinder after impact. These works showed a region in which spatial and temporal variation of both longitudinal and radial deformation provided evidence of changes in phase within the material. In this further series of experiments, this region is imaged in a range of impacted targets at the Diamond synchrotron. Further techniques were fielded to resolve compressed regions within the recovered polymer cylinders that showed a fracture zone in the impact region. The combination of macroscopic high-speed photography and three-dimensional X-ray imaging has identified the development of failure with these polymers and shown that there is no abrupt transition in behaviours but rather a continuous range of responses to competing operating mechanisms. The behaviours noted in PEEK in these polymers show critical gaps in understanding of polymer high strain-rate response.

The impact of a flat-ended cylindrical rod onto a rigid stationary anvil, often known as the Taylor impact test, is studied. An axisymmetric model is developed to capture the deformation behaviour of the rod after impact. The most distinctive feature of the proposed model is that it takes into account the spatial and temporal variation of both longitudinal and radial deformation and consequently the strains and strain rates. The final deformed shapes and time histories of different field variables, as obtained from the model, are found to be in good agreement with corresponding experimental and numerical results reported in the literature. The proposed model is then used to formulate an inverse framework to estimate the Johnson–Cook constitutive parameters. In the inverse formulation, the objective function is constructed using the final deformed length and diameter at the impact end of the retrieved rod. Finally, the potential of the proposed model in estimating material parameters is illustrated through some examples.

Three-dimensional (3-D) high speed photography was used to record the overarm throwing actions of five open-age, four 18-year-old, six 16-year- old, and six 14-year-old high-performance baseball catchers. The direct linear transformation method was used for 3-D space reconstruction from 2-D images of the catchers throwing from home plate to second base recorded using two phase-locked cameras operating at a nominal rate of 200 Hz. Selected physical capacity measures were also recorded and correlated with ball release speed. In general, anthropometric and strength measures significantly increased through the 14-year-old to open-age classifications, while a range of correlation coefficients from .50 to .84 was recorded between these physical capacities and ball speed at release. While many aspects of the kinematic data at release were similar, the key factors of release angle and release speed varied for the different age groups.

HighlightsThe hydraulic performance of the impact sprinkler with circular and non-circular nozzles were measured.A High-Speed Photography (HSP) technique was employed to extract the jet breakup process of the impact sprinkler.Two index equations of jet characteristic lengths and equivalent diameters of non-circular nozzles were fitted. Abstract. An experiment was carried out to investigate the hydraulic performance of an impact sprinkler by using circular and non-circular nozzles. A High-Speed Photography (HSP) technique was employed to extract the breakup process and flow behavior of low-intermediate pressure water jets issued from the different types of orifices. These orifices were selected by the principle of equal flowrate with the same pressure. Moreover, two characteristic lengths: the jet breakup length and the initial amplitude of surface wave were measured. It was found that the sprinkler with circular nozzles produced the largest radius of throw followed by square nozzles and regular triangular nozzles when the cone angle of nozzle and pressure were unchanged, while the sprinkler with regular triangular nozzle had the best variation trend of water distribution and combination uniformity coefficient. Regular triangular jets exhibited a higher degree in breakup and the shortest breakup length compared with the square jets and the circular jets. The initial amplitudes of surface waves of regular triangular jets were larger than the square jets and the circular jets with the same cone angle. Two index equations of jet characteristic lengths and equivalent diameters of both circular and non-circular orifices were fitted with a relative error of less than 10%, which means the fitting formulas were accurate. Phase-enhanced x-ray imaging has been used to examine the geometry and dynamics of four diesel injector nozzles. The technique uses a high-speed camera, which allows the dynamics of individual injection events to be observed in real time and compared. Moreover, data has been obtained for the nozzles from two different viewing angles, allowing for the full three-dimensional motions of the needle to be examined. This technique allows the needle motion to be determined in situ at the needle seat and requires no modifications to the injector hardware, unlike conventional techniques. Measurements of the nozzle geometry have allowed the average nozzle diameter, degree of convergence or divergence, and the degree of rounding at the nozzle inlet to be examined. Measurements of the needle lift have shown that the lift behavior of all four nozzles consists of a linear increase in needle lift with respect to time until the needle reaches full lift and a linear decrease as the needle closes. For all four nozzles, the needle position oscillates at full lift with a period of 170–180 μs. The full-lift position of the needle changes as the rail pressure increases, perhaps reflecting compression of the injector components. Significant lateral motions were seen in the two single-hole nozzles, with the needle motion perpendicular to the injector axis resembling a circular motion for one nozzle and linear oscillation for the other nozzle. The two VCO multihole nozzles show much less lateral motion, with no strong oscillations visible.

This paper establishes a novel mathematical model for computing the plume flow field of a carrier-based aircraft engine. Its objective is to study the impact of jet exhaust gases with high temperature, high speed and high pressure on the jet blast deflector. The working condition of the nozzle of a fully powered on engine is first determined. The flow field of the exhaust jet is then numerically simulated at different deflection angle using the three-dimensional Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes equations and the standard [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text] turbulence method. Moreover, infra-red temperature tests are further carried out to test the temperature field when the jet blast deflector is at the [Formula: see text] deflection angle. The comparison between the simulation results and the experimental results show that the proposed computation model can perfectly describe the system. There is only 8–10% variation between them. A good verification is achieved. Moreover, the experimental results show that the jet blast deflector plays an outstanding role in driving the high-temperature exhaust gases. It is found that [Formula: see text] may be the best deflection angle to protect the deck and the surrounding equipment effectively. These data results provide a valuable basis for the design and layout optimization of the jet blast deflector and deck.

Six explosive experiments were performed in October 2014 and February of 2015 at the Munitions Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory with the goal of providing validation-quality data for particle drag models in the extreme regime of detonation. Three repeated single particle experiments and three particle array experiments were conducted. The time-varying position of the particles was captured within the explosive products by X-ray imaging. The contact front and shock locations were captured by high-speed photography to provide information on the early time gas behavior. Since these experiments were performed in the past and could not be repeated, we faced an interesting challenge of quantifying and reducing uncertainty through a detailed investigation of the experimental setup and operating conditions. This paper presents the results from these unique experiments, which can serve as benchmark for future modeling, and also our effort to reduce uncertainty, which we dub forensic uncertainty quantification (FUQ).

The Taylor test is used to determine damage evolution in carbon-fibre composites across a range of strain rates. The hierarchy of damage across the scales is key in determining the suite of operating mechanisms and high-speed diagnostics are used to determine states during dynamic loading. Experiments record the test response as a function of the orientation of the cylinder cut from the engineered multi-ply composite with high-speed photography and post-mortem target examination. The ensuing damage occurs during the shock compression phase but three other tensile loading modes operate during the test and these are explored. Experiment has shown that ply orientations respond to two components of release; longitudinal and radial as well as the hoop stresses generated in inelastic flow at the impact surface. The test is a discriminant not only of damage thresholds but of local failure modes and their kinetics. This article is part of the themed issue ‘Multiscale modelling of the structural integrity of composite materials’.


The type of stress pulse produced when a liquid mass strikes a solid at high velocity is first examined. Compressible behaviour, giving rise to a sharp peak of pressure, is found to occur in the initial stages of the impact. The duration of this peak depends on the dimensions and impact velocity of the liquid mass, and also on the compressible wave velocity for the liquid. A comparison is made with pulses produced by solid/solid impact and by the detonation of small quantities of explosive. Both the high-speed liquid impact and the explosive loading give intense pulses of duration only a few microseconds. A solid/solid impact has, by comparison, a much longer impact time of the order of hundreds of microseconds. The fracture of glasses and hard polymers using these three types of loading is described. The development of fracture is followed by high-speed photography. Differences in the modes of fracture are attributed to variations in the shape and duration of the applied stress pulses. Short circumferential fractures produced around the loaded area in liquid impact and explosive loading are shown to be initiated by the Rayleigh surface wave at points where flaws existed. More complex fracture patterns on the front surfaces of plates are due to the reinforcement of the surface wave with components of stress waves reflected from the back surface. A combination of impact loading and etching makes it possible to investigate the distribution and depths of flaws, their role in the fracture process, and the effect which etching has upon them. The observation on the deformation produced in solids by liquid impact has practical significance in the problem of supersonic aircraft flying through rain and in the erosion of turbine blades moving at high velocity through wet steam.

Currently, most of commercial needle-free jet injectors generate the liquid jet by a method called “driving object method” (DOM); however, the reliability and efficiency are still questioned. This paper proposes a new concept of jet generation method, known as “impact driven method” (IDM). A prototype of an IDM jet injector is designed, built, tested, and compared to a commercial device (Cool.click, Tigard, OR). Fundamental characteristics, i.e., the exit jet velocity and impact pressure, are measured. Jet injection processes are visualized both in air and in 20% polyacrylamide by high speed photography. In this study, from the prototype of the IDM jet injector, a maximum jet velocity of 400 m/s and impact peak pressure of 68 MPa can be obtained. It is clear that the IDM jet injector provides a double pulsed liquid jet, which is a major advantage over the commercial jet injector. Because, the first pulse gives a shorter erosion stage, and then, immediately the second pulse follows and provides a better penetration, wider lateral dispersion, and considerably less back splash. Hence, lower pain level and higher delivery efficiency should be achieved. It can be concluded that the IDM concept is highly feasible for implementation in real applications, either for human or animal injection. However, the control and accuracy of IDM still needs to be carefully investigated.

Hydraulic characteristics of orifice plates with multiple triangular holes in hydrodynamic cavitation reactor were experimentally investigated by use of three dimensional particle image velocimetry (PIV), high speed photography, electronic multi-pressure scanivalve and pressure data acquisition system, and numerically simulated by CFD software Flow 3D in this paper. Effects of number, arrangement and ratio of holes on hydraulic characteristics of the orifice plates were considered. Effects of arrangement and ratio of holes and flow velocity ahead of plate on cavitation number and velocity profile were compared. Distribution of turbulent kinetic energy and similarity of velocity profile were analyzed. And characteristics of cavitating flow downstream of the orifice plate were photographically observed by high speed camera. Also, a comparison with flow characteristics of orifice plate with hybrid holes (circle, square and triangle) was made.
