AbstractBackgroundMalaria still remains a major killer of children under-five, claiming the life of one child every two minutes globally. More than 78% of deaths among children under-five in Africa are as a result of malaria infection. Despite the several interventions to reduce malaria and anaemia, the disease remains a global public concern as more children continue to die. This study assessed the prevalence and trend of malaria and anaemia in children under-five years from 2012 to 2016.MethodsWe conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study among children under-five with malaria and anaemia who received care at the hospital in Jasikan town, Ghana from 2012 to 2016. Data were extracted from the children’s ward admission and discharge registers. We computed descriptive statistics to describe the data. STATA version 14 was used to carry out the analyses.ResultsOut of 30082 malaria cases, 835 were with anaemia from 2012 to 2016. This study demonstrated an overall proportion of malaria with anaemia as 0.028 (28 per 1000 malaria cases). Year 2014 recorded the highest proportion (38 per 1,000 malaria cases) of malaria with anaemia cases in the district. Overall, prevalence rate of malaria and anaemia cases separately was found as 61.5% and 4.4% respectively from 2012-2016. Children within 24-35 months’ age group contributed the highest (28.3%) and 0-11 months accounted for the lowest (12.9%) malaria with anaemia cases. Majority of malaria with anaemia cases 531 (63.6%) occurred in the rainy season from June to July.ConclusionThere is a high prevalence of malaria with anaemia cases among children under-five from 2012-2016. Age and seasonal variation were found to be predictors of an increase in the prevalence of malaria with anaemia.

Objectives: Assess the nutritional status, worm infection status and some related factors among children aged 12-36 months of Dakrong district, Quang Tri province. Subject and method: A cross sectional study was carried out in 2010, in 680 children aged 12-36 months in 4 communes of Dakrong district, Quang Tri province. Results: The malnutrition rate was 55.0% for underweight, 66.5% for stunting and 16.2% for wasting. The prevalence of malnutrition increases by age group. The prevalence of worm infection was 31.6%, the highest prevalence was belong to Ascaris infection (24.6%), followed by Hookworm and Trichuris (6.5% and 6.2%, respectively). The prevalence of worm infection among children under two is very high (27.0%). The prevalence of worm infection was distributed quite equally between the malnutrition children group and normal children group. Recommendation: Early deworming forchildren from 12 months should be considered as important strategy against the malnutrition of children in Dakrong district, Quang Tri province

BACKGROUND Globally, there is an increasing prevalence of excessive screen time exposure among young children, including Malaysia. Parents are advised to limit this exposure but there are barriers for many of them to follow this recommendation. To date, there is a lack of studies on the factors that cause these parental barriers. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to determine the parental barrier towards the reduction of excessive child’s screen time and its predictors among parents of children under five years old in Petaling District, Selangor. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted from April 2019 to June 2020 among 789 parent-child dyads attending child health clinics in Petaling District, Selangor. Validated self-administered questionnaires were used to capture information on sociodemographic factors, parental influences, child-related factors, environmental factors, and parental barriers. Stratified sampling with probability proportionate to size was employed. Data were analysed with IBM SPSS version 25. Descriptive analysis and bivariate analysis were performed before multiple linear regression was used to identify the predictors of parental barriers. RESULTS The overall mean score of parental barriers was 3.51 ± 0.83, indicating that the average numbers of barriers experienced by parents were more than three. The multivariate analysis showed that the predictors of parental barriers included monthly household income (adjusted β: -0.031, 95% CI: -0.048 to -0.015), parents who worked in public sectors (adjusted β: 0.178, 95% CI: 0.063 to 0.292), positive parental attitude on screens (adjusted β: 0.684, 95% CI: 0.576 to 0.793), parents’ low self-efficacy to influence child’s physical activity (adjusted β: -0.318, 95% CI: -0.432 to -0.204), and child’s screen time (adjusted β: 0.042, 95% CI: 0.024 to 0.061). CONCLUSIONS The strongest predictor of the parental barriers to reduce excessive child’s screen time was the positive parental attitude on screen time. Thus, future intervention strategies should aim to foster correct parental attitudes towards screen time activities among young children.

Abstract Background: Diarrhea is responsible for 525,000 children under-five deaths and 1.7 billion cases globally and is the second leading cause of death among children under-five every year. It is a major public health problem in low income countries like Ethiopia. The main aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of diarrhea and associated risk factors among children under-five in Debre Berhan Town, Ethiopia. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in 420 parent or caretaker/children pairs in Debre Berhan town between 13–18 April 2018. A multi-stage sampling strategy was used to select the study participants. Data were collected using pre-tested and structured questionnaires. Data were entered in Epi-info computer software version 3.5.1 and exported to SPSS Window Version-16 for analysis. Adjusted odds ratio with 95% confidence intervals were used to assess the level of significance. Results: The two week prevalence of diarrhea among children under-five was 16.4% (69/351). Children aged 7-11 months (adjusted odds ratio (AOR): 4.2, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.2 - 15.3), being the second-born child (AOR: 3.9, 95%CI: 1.8 - 8.5), not vaccinated against rotavirus (AOR: 10.3, 95%CI: 3.2 - 91.3) and feeding children by hand (AOR: 2.5, 95%CI: 1.1 - 6.1) were significant predictors of diarrhea. Conclusions: This study revealed that the two weeks period prevalence of diarrhea among children under-five years was 16.4%. Education programs on the importance of vaccination against rotavirus, increasing breast feeding frequency with complementary food after six months and the critical points of hand washing are recommended.

Background: Under-five children are more vulnerable to malnutrition especially in rural areas resulting in more morbidity and mortality among them. The present study is aimed to assess the prevalence of malnutrition among children of 1-5 years of age in tribal hamlets of Valparai block, Coimbatore district in Tamil Nadu. Methods: A community-based, cross-sectional study was conducted among 95 children in the age group of 1-5 years during December-January 2020. Anthropometric measurements were taken. The indicators of nutritional status of children like stunting, underweight, and wasting were expressed using WHO growth standards. Results: The overall prevalence of malnutrition in our study was 31.6%. Among the 30 (31.6%) malnourished children, 40% were underweight, and 6.67% were severely underweight. 40% were stunted, of which 13.3% were severely stunted. Wasting was present in 23.3% of malnourished children. Severe wasting was not seen. Socio-demographic factors including the type of house, maternal education, BMI of the mother, age of mother at childbirth and place of delivery had significant association with malnutrition among under-five tribal children. Conclusions: Malnutrition poses a serious threat to under-five children. Though many known risk factors of malnutrition have been studied, understanding the local factors linked with malnutrition is so crucial while planning information, education, and communication programs in this area.

Kasus diare terus meningkat di Kota Makassar sebanyak 23.334 kasus ditahun 2016. Balita menjadi kelompok yang rentan terhadap diare. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui kontaminasi bakteri Escherichia coli pada botol susu dengan kejadian diare pada balita di wilayah kerja Puskesmas Kaluku Bodoa Kota Makassar Tahun 2018. Jenis penelitian yang digunakan adalah observasional dengan desain cross sectional study. Populasi adalah seluruh balita yang berada di wilayah kerja Puskesmas Kaluku Bodoa. Sampel adalah balita yang memakai botol susu yang dipilih menggunakan teknik proportional random sampling, sebanyak 72 anak balita. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tidak dapat melihat hubungan Escherichia coli pada botol dikarenakan seluruh sampe terdapat Escherichia coli dan tidak memenuhi  syarat,  sedangkan pada proses  pencucian (p=0.007), penyimpanan botol (p=0.041), menyiapkan botol (p=0.100), penyediaan air bersih (p=0.904), kebiasaan cuci tangan pakai sabun (p=0.229). Kesimpulan dari penelitian bahwa tidak dapat melihat perbandingan Escherichia coli pada botol susu dikarenakan seluruh sample terdapat bakteri E.coli. Terdapat hubungan yang signifikan antara pencucian dan  menyiapkan botol susu dengan kejadian diare pada balita di wilayah kerja Puskesmas Kaluku Bodoa Kota Makassar Tahun 2018. Penelitian ini menyarankan agar para ibu atau wali anak lebih memperhatikan cara pencucian botol susu dan  penyiapan botol susu. This study aims to determine the contamination of Escherichia coli bacteria in milk bottles with the incidence of diarrhea in infants in the working area of ​​Kaluku Bodoa Public Health Center Makassar City in 2018. The type of research used was observational with a cross sectional study design. The population is all children under five in the working area of ​​Kaluku Bodoa Health Center. Samples are toddlers who use milk bottles selected using proportional random sampling technique, as many as 72 children under five. The results showed that there was no relationship between Escherichia coli on the bottle because all Escherichia coli was present and did not meet the requirements, whereas in the washing process (p = 0.007), storage of bottles (p = 0.041), preparing bottles (p = 0.100), provision clean water (p = 0.904), handwashing habits with soap (p = 0.229). The conclusion from the study that can not see the comparison of Escherichia coli in milk bottles because all samples contained E.coli bacteria. There is a significant relationship between washing and preparing milk bottles with the incidence of diarrhea in infants in the working area of ​​the Kaluku Bodoa Public Health Center Makassar City in 2018. This study suggests that mothers or guardians of children pay more attention to how to wash bottles and prepare milk bottles.
