Purpose: Knowledge management aims to maximize the results of an organization through processes that foster the creation and sharing of knowledge. The objective of this article was to analyse what the international scientific literature has focused on regarding knowledge management in the public sector and whether there is research related to knowledge management with environmental management.Design/methodology/approach: This is a systematic review of the state of the art of the knowledge management in the public sectorFindings: The authors’ main contribution is the proposal of a research agenda with recommendations for future researchTwenty articles pertinent to the purpose of this research were identified. The results of the study identified that the topic of knowledge management is still quite insipid in the public sector, encountering numerous cultural and technological barriers.Practical implications: The study showed that knowledge management practices in the public sector tend to significantly increase the performance of organizations, generating greater efficiency and productivity. As shown in the results, the proposed ideal is to align learning, leadership, technology and organizational culture to the process of sharing organizational knowledge.Originality/value: This is the latest research that conducts a state-of-the-art review of state-of-the-art knowledge management in the public sector and proposes a research agenda with several suggestions that can guide researchers, managers and governments to advance research that is truly useful to development the theme in a world context


Knowledge Management is the process of capturing, distributing and distributing knowledge effectively. In the last few decades with the rise in information technology and advances in Knowledge Management, ethics in knowledge management is one of the important areas to be researched. The present study uses the Scopus database to analyze the research trends in this area. The findings highlighted that there are less than 10% studies in the area of knowledge management and ethics. The study finding has shown that although there is a rise in the studies in this area, the ethics in knowledge management is one area which needs to be explored.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to explore, understand and investigate the relationship between national culture and knowledge management (KM) process.Design/methodology/approachThis study is based on systematically and objectively capturing the contents of extant research papers published by researchers in this area by using the literature review methodology.FindingsThe study demonstrates significant relationship between national culture and KM process. Further, it also provides directions for future research.Practical implicationsThe study will help top management to understand and appreciate the impact of national culture on KM process in organization, where people from different nations are working together. The management may apply appropriate organizational interventions to manage people of different national cultures in effective manner and effective utilization of knowledge of the organization through KM process. This paper will be considered as a quick reference and resource for anyone interested in this area.Originality/valueThis study is a comprehensive literature review of influence of national culture on KM process. Further, it also sets the research agenda for future researchers.

Knowledge management (KM) is a critical practice by which a firm’s intellectual capital is created, stored and shared. This has lead to a rich research agenda within which knowledge management systems (KMS) have been a key focus. Our research reveals that an important element of KM practice— knowledge appraisal—is considered in only a fragmentary and incomplete way in research. Knowledge appraisal reflects the multi-level process by which a firm’s knowledge is evaluated by the organization or individual for its value. The processes are highly intertwined with the use of the KMS. It therefore requires consideration of KA across multiple levels and types of knowledge across the entire KM cycle. To achieve this goal, we develop and present a taxonomy of knowledge appraisal practices and discuss their role in the KM lifecycle emphasizing implications for research and practice.

Knowledge has been recognized as a key organizational resource. Yet, despite commitment in knowledge management (KM), many researchers and organizations overlook the need to engage in the alignment of knowledge-related resources with business-related strategies (knowledge strategic alignment). Although many reasons may be advanced for the lack of research and practice on knowledge strategic alignment, two reasons stand out. First, the alignment concept is difficult to understand and measure (Chan, Huff, Barclay & Copeland, 1997), and second, the KM field is relatively new and lacks appropriate frameworks, models, and methodologies for expected research and practice (Earl, 2001). The objectives of this chapter are twofold: The first is an attempt to respond to the call for frameworks, models, and methodologies for research in KM; and the second is an attempt to “simplify” the understanding of the alignment concept within the KM field. To attain both objectives, we first review the KM literature, and then opine on research from the alignment “reference fields” (Information Systems/Information Technology (IS/IT) and strategic management), where the alignment concept is well researched and practiced to propose a framework for research on alignment in the KM field. We identify relevant research models, discuss conceptualizations of alignment in KM, and illustrate the application of the framework, models, and alignment concepts.
