PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to study the effect of the material inhomogeneity on crack behavior initiated both axially and circumferentially in or near the butt weld and to discuss consequences on residual lifetime of the welded structure.Design/methodology/approachA three‐dimensional numerical model of pipe weld with smooth and continuous change of material properties has been used to study the fracture behavior of the cracked pipe structure. The stress intensity factor was considered as a parameter controlling the fracture behavior. The semi‐elliptical shape of the crack front was estimated under assumption of constant stress intensity factor along the crack front.FindingsAccording to the results obtained in the paper the following conclusions were deduced. First, the most critical location of the crack is in the middle of the inhomogeneous region (weld center) regardless of the crack orientation. The stress intensity factor is substantially higher than in the case of a crack located in the homogenous pipe. Second, with regard to crack shapes, the circumferentially oriented cracks are practically identical regardless to the crack location if compared with the axial cracks. Third, the stress intensity factors of axially‐oriented cracks are approximately twice higher than in the case of circumferential cracks. This implies that the cracks are more likely to grow in an axial direction.Originality/valueThe results described in the paper can be used for estimation of critical crack length or for estimation of the critical applied inner pressure of medium transported in the pipe and are of paramount importance for service life estimations of polymer welded pipes in actual use.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to develop a methodology for in situ stress intensity factor (SIF) determination that can be used for the analysis of cracked structures. The technique is based on digital image correlation (DIC) combined with an overdetermined algorithm.Design/methodology/approachThe linear overdeterministic algorithm for calculating the SIF based on stress values around the crack tip is applied to a strain field obtained by DIC.FindingsAs long as the image quality is sufficiently high, a good accuracy can be obtained for the measured SIF. The crack tip can be automatically detected based on the same strain field. The use of the strain field instead of the displacement field, eliminates problems related to the rigid body motion of the analysed structure.Practical implicationsIn future works, based on the applied techniques, the SIF of complex cracked plane stress structures can be accurately determined in real engineering applications.Originality/valueThe paper demonstrates application of known techniques, refined for other applications, also the use of stress field for SIF overdeterministic calculations.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present the determination of critical stress intensity factor (KC) both by experimental method and three-dimensional (3D) finite element simulations. Design/methodology/approach CT specimens of different compositions of Al6061-TiC composites (3wt%, 5wt% and 7wt% TiC) with variable crack length to width (a/W=0.3-0.6) ratios are machined from as-cast composite block. After fatigue pre-cracking the specimens to a required crack length, experimental load vs crack mouth opening displacement data are plotted to calculate the KC value. Elastic 3D finite element simulations have been conducted for CT specimens of various compositions and a/W ratios to compute KC. The experimental results indicate that the magnitude of KC depends on a/W ratios, and significantly decreases with increase in a/W ratios of the specimen. Findings From 3D finite element simulation, the KC results at the centre of CT specimens for various Al6061-TiC composites and a/W ratios show satisfactory agreement with experimental results compared to the surface. Originality/value The research work contained in this manuscript was conducted during 2015-2016. It is original work except where due reference is made. The authors confirm that the research in their work is original, and that all the data given in the article are real and authentic. If necessary, the paper can be recalled, and errors corrected.

This study gives the problem of a crack in the film oriented perpendicular to the film-substrate interface with the crack tip terminating at the interface. Based on Beuth’s theory, three-dimensional model is simplified to plane strain problems, which obtains fracture mechanisms of a cracked film-substrate medium by applying the boundary element method(BEM). The method aptly resolves the problem involving stress concentration and, further, that this study develops the multi-region boundary element method and applies it to evaluate the cracked film-substrate medium. It shows that the stress intensity factor is affected by the different elastic mismatches and the thickness ratio of the film and the substrate. These results indicate: 1) The stress intensity factor has remarkable increased with the decrease of the thickness ratio of the film and the substrate. The effect of the fracture behavior of film is negligible when the thickness ratio of the film and the substrate is above 10, therefore, it is treated as thin film; 2) The stress intensity factor will decrease with the increase of α ( −1 pα p +1) for β = 0 and β =α / 4 , where α and β are called Dundurs parameters. What’s more, this paper studies the special condition of the film-substrate medium, which is the analysis of the fracture of the absence of any elastic mismatch between the film and the substrate, i.e.α=β=0, and revision of the formula of Xia and Hutchinson is put forward for the stress intensity factor of the deep crack problems by comparing to the former conclusions of Y.Murakami.

The interaction of multiple flaws in close proximity to one another may increase the stress intensity factor of the flaw in structures and components. This interaction effect is not distributed uniformly along the crack front. For instance, the strongest interaction is generally observed at the point closest to a neighboring flaw. For this reason, the closest point could show a higher value of the stress intensity factor than all other points in some cases, even if the original value at the point of the single flaw is relatively low. To clarify the condition when the closest point shows the maximum stress intensity factor, we investigated the interaction of two similar elliptical flaws in an infinite model subjected to remote tension loading. The stress intensity factor of the elliptical flaws was obtained by performing finite element analysis of a linear elastic solid. The results indicated that the interaction factors along the crack front can be expressed by a simple empirical formula. Finally, we show the relationship between geometrical features of the flaw and the stress intensity factor at the closest point to a neighboring flaw.

The objective was to quantify the variation of stress intensity factor to weld root flaw sizes in steel frame connections. Finite-element analyses were used to study fracture toughness in welded beam-column connections. Investigations of fracture behavior mainly focused on the standard pre-Northridge connection geometry. Finite element analysis was performed using the ANSYS computer program. Stress intensity factor was calculated through a J-integral approach. Results show that stress intensity factor is not uniform and is largest in the middle of beam flange. Stress intensity factor increases nearly linear with the increase of flaw size. Backing bars have little effect on weld fractures.

Effects of defects on the dynamic fracture behavior of engineering materials cannot be neglected. Using the experimental system of digital laser dynamic caustics, the effects of defects on the dynamic fracture behavior of nearby running cracks are studied. When running cracks propagate near to defects, the crack path deflects toward the defect; the degree of deflection is greater for larger defect diameters. When the running crack propagates away from the defect, the degree of deflection gradually reduces and the original crack path is restored. The intersection between the caustic spot and the defect is the direct cause of the running crack deflection; the intersection area determines the degree of deflection. In addition, the defect locally inhibits the dynamic stress intensity factor of running cracks when they propagate toward the defect and locally promotes the dynamic stress intensity factor of running cracks when they propagate away from the defect.

A 3-D linear elastic analysis has been performed for a circular crack located in the nozzle corner region of a nuclear pressure vessel. The stress intensity factor, K, was found to be virtually constant along the crack front for this particular nozzle corner flaw, which extends one quarter of the distance through the nozzle corner diagonal. The magnitude of K is discussed in relation to the stress intensity factor for the ASME Maximum Postulated Flaw, and is compared to the results of a number of other analyses reported in the literature.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to evaluate theoretically and numerically the stress and stress intensity factor (SIF) at the time of propagation of the crack in bi-material. The problem is formulated using two thin materials which are bound by a cracked adhesive at the tip and having a micro-crack in one of these two materials.Design/methodology/approachThe plane stresses and the SIF will be determined as a function of two parameters (Poisson’s ratio and Shear modulus). The numerical analysis is carried out on a flat element, having a main crack in one of these ends, and a micro-crack varies in the vicinity of this main crack. The problem is analyzed by the finite element method and processed by computational software (ABAQUS).FindingsThe numerical and theoretical analysis allowed the author to determine and compare the values of plane stresses and SIF in each area of the material.Originality/valueThe theoretical analysis of SIF is based mainly on a mathematical calculation of equations of plane stresses; these equations are determined by development of complex analytical functions of bi-materials given by other researchers. Using the numerical method, several models are modeled by changing the micro-crack position relative to the main crack to determine the plane stresses and SIF for each position.
