The elliptical nozzle has the potential ability to increase the air-fuel mixture quality. A one-way coupled spray model and Homogenous Relaxation Model (HRM) was adopted to investigate the spray behaviors and the air-fuel mixture progress in real diesel combustion chamber with the application of elliptical and circular diesel nozzle. The results indicated that the spray cone angle and the air entrainment mass of elliptical nozzle were larger than that of the circular nozzle, while the spray penetration of the elliptical nozzle which the aspect ratio is 1.5 and 2 was shortened by 11% and 8.3% as compared to circular spray respectively. Also, the air entrainment mass of the elliptical spray with a ratio of 1.5 and 2 increased by 60% and 35% as compared with circular spray respectively. Furthermore, the partial equivalent ratio and the high concentration area in the cylinder is reduced for elliptical nozzle, and the air-fuel mixture is more uniform. The fuel evaporation rate of elliptical spray is always higher than that of the circular spray.

Abstract One of the most common ways to obtain mixing between liquid and air, is by injecting the liquid jet into an incoming gaseous crossflow. The physics of this mixing flow is very complicated due to the presence of many flow interfacial instabilities. Usually, a perpendicular liquid jet into the cross flow airstream is used as the standard method of mixing. In the present work, the effect of the injection angle of the liquid flow emanated from a circular nozzle into airstream was experimentally investigated. The flow characteristics of the liquid jet were visualized by diffused backlight shadowgraph technique and high-speed photography. Water was used as the working liquid and tests were conducted into an incoming airstream at room temperature and pressure. A circular nozzle with 1.5 mm in diameter was used. The injection angles of the 30, 45, 60 and 90 degrees of the liquid jet into the airstream were considered. Different parameters of liquid jet flow such as breakup length and trajectory were measured. It was found that at low angles the path was independent from the momentum ratio.

The present study focuses on the effect of nozzle exit inclination on the mixing characteristics of Mach 2.17 overexpanded jets at the NPR 5, NPR 6 and NPR 7, using commercial software package ANSYS Fluent. The convergent-divergent nozzles, investigated are circular nozzle and bevel nozzle with bevel angle 300, and bevel angel 450. The nozzles are constructed with equal throat-to-exit area ratio, in order to maintain uniform Mach number at the nozzle exit. From the results, it was found that, the bevelled nozzles effectively reduce the jet core as much as 46%, indicating enhanced jet mixing. It was also observed that at lower NPR, i.e., at NPR 5, the Bevel30 nozzle is found superior over Bevel45 and circular nozzle and at the intermediate NPR, both of the Bevel30 and Bevel45 nozzle reduces the jet core with the same rate. However, at highest NPR of the present study, the Bevel45 nozzle exhibits the highest mixing enhancement. An early axis switching is seen for the Bevel30 jet at NPR 5 and for the Bevel45 jet at NPR 7.

CFD simulation and analysis of the internal flow field of the annular multi-nozzle jet pump are carried out to study the effects of nozzle section geometries on performance of the pump based on the finite volume method and realizable k-ε model. The results show that the square nozzle peak efficiency is 3% higher than that of the circular nozzle and 4.1% higher than that of the triangular nozzle. According to the simulation results, the mixing mechanism of the working fluid and second fluid is analyzed on the basis of the vortex dynamics. The results show the following: the recirculation area and the friction loss of the non-circular nozzle are reduced, and the mixing effect is improved; the streamwise vortex plays a major role in the mixing process and decays to an extremely small value at the end of the throat after attenuating rapidly in the suction chamber; compared with the streamwise vortex, the strength of the spanwise vortex is relatively stronger; the spanwise vortex still fluctuates after developing to a certain extent in the throat; the maximum streamwise vorticity peak value of the square nozzle is 31% more than that of the circular nozzle and 39% more than that of the triangular nozzle; the maximum spanwise vorticity peak value of the square nozzle is 19% less than that of the circular nozzle and 12% less than that of the triangular nozzle.

As an important over-current component of the waterjet propulsion system, the main function of a nozzle is to transform the mechanical energy of the propulsion pump into the kinetic energy of the water and eject the water flow to obtain thrust. In this study, the nozzle with different geometry and parameters was simulated based on computational fluid dynamics simulation and experiment. Numerical results show a good agreement with experimental results. The results show that the nozzle with a circular shape outlet shrinks evenly. Under the designed flow rate condition, the velocity uniformity of the circular nozzle is 0.26% and 0.34% higher than that of the elliptical nozzle and the rounded rectangle nozzle, respectively. The pump efficiency of the circular nozzle is 0.31% and 0.14% higher than that of the others. The pressure recovery and hydraulic loss of the circular nozzle are superior. The hydraulic characteristics of the propulsion pump and waterjet propulsion system are optimal when the nozzle area is 30% times the outlet area of the inlet duct. Thus, the shaft power, head, thrust, and system efficiency of the propulsion pump and waterjet propulsion system are maximized. The system efficiency curve decreases rapidly when the outlet area exceeds 30% times the outlet area of the inlet duct. The transition curve forms greatly affect thrust and system efficiency. The transition of the linear contraction shows improved uniformity, and the hydraulic loss is reduced. Furthermore, the hydraulic performance of the nozzle with a linear contraction transition is better than that of others.
