Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to include the following items: to show the absolute necessity of managing the international community, to explore the fundamental possibility of managing the global world, to prove or disprove such a possibility, to determine the real background of global governance in modern conditions and to show the methods of transition toward global governance. Design/methodology/approach – The main methodological principles used in writing the paper are: the principle of the integrity of the world; the understanding of globalization as an objective historical process; the principle of historical sequence of the considered event; the principle of priority of the general over the particular, as well as of the global over the regional and the local. Findings – As a result of the proposed research, it is shown that the global world needs to be managed. Prerequisites for the management of the global world are identified, among which the most important are morality and rights. It is shown that for management of the global world there should not only be global government, but also other branches of government, such as a World Parliament and a judicial system based on global law. Research limitations/implications – A clear distinction between the management and regulation of social relations is made. The need to further explore the concepts of international law and global right is stated. Practical implications – National sovereignty increasingly must give place to global governance structures. Social implications – The need to build a global civil society is evident. Originality/value – The absolute necessity and possibility of regulating the world community are shown. New approaches to solving this problem are proposed. They are based on existing assumptions in the field of executive and legislative power and also involve the creation of new structures, primarily in the area of the judiciary.

This book provides a series of case studies concerning ports and port communities from around the world, in attempt to determine the impact of globalisation on the port industry and the link between local and global port conditions. It also presents the case for the absolute necessity of ports and port systems to trade and industry on a global scale. The book is comprised of ten essays, the first six of which concern local issues in a rapid globalising industry. The second section contains the remaining four essays, which consider port systems from national perspectives.

Purpose Globalisation has remained a subjective term as the magnitude unfolded. Every new decade witnesses new opportunities for global integration of the economies. One among such initiatives, it is argued, is the One Belt One Road initiative of the People’s Republic of China. It is assumed to be beneficial for the world and at least for the region, if not to say more. The world has witnessed efforts and trends of protectionism as well, but China comes up with new vigour. One Belt One Road has entered into consistent talks and deliberations at the world level. It is therefore imperative to identify the emerging linkages between the participant countries in One Belt One Road. This study aims to take up the task of enquiring about the effect of One Belt One Road on the gravity between China and the nations of Eurasia. This study looks for the realisation of the expected economic ties and internationalisation emerging from One Belt One Road and the evidence for the same. This will be identified in the present study. The paper also attempts to theorise a model for One Belt One Road. Design/methodology/approach This study takes up the task of enquiring about the effect of One Belt One Road on the gravity between China and the nations of Eurasia. The hypothesised economic ties and internationalisation will be a reality or not. And what are the evidences for the same. This will be identified in the proposed study. An attempt to theorise the model for One Belt One Road is also taken. Findings It is perceived that the mega project would fill the wedge between China and Eurasia and convergence will follow with the start of the One Belt One Road. Originality/value The emergence of China in the global world order as the initiator of mega deals and projects and its dominion in every realm of economic activity is a topic of scrutiny for the entire world. In this context, the One Belt One Road initiative offers huge potential for exploration. As the project is in its early stages of planning and execution, its prospects of tying entire Europe and Russia with China through two of the revived ancient routes are essential to the entire world.

Purpose – The purpose of this review is to challenge the view that universities, particularly medallion institutions, have the prerogative to repurpose or interpret funds received without accepting responsibility to provide value. Design/methodology/approach – This is a review article discussing issues raised in the 2014 Global Forum in Paris. Findings – Citing this “Forum” and the open literature, it is evident that as more money is made available through new donors, maintaining oversight on how such funds are used can become problematic. Rather, it is suggested that donors become more involved and responsible rather than participating passively and accepting the “wisdom” of the recipients. Social implications – The world is becoming more dynamic, implying that ideas and funds committed in the beginning need careful and ongoing assessment. Many new donors lack the experience of older organizations, both funders and funded, and may have a proclivity to default to decisions of others. “There be Dragons Here”. Originality/value – Recipients of funds, particularly the institutions of higher education have a tendency to see the world through the eyes of their expertise. In the past, most parties have deferred to such “authority” which is proving to be more tenuous in an evolving and changing global world. Care needs to be exercised using criteria that needs to be dynamic and one that is still evolving.

For all its myriad debates, interpretations, and discussions, research on detailing and imagining civil society, global civil society, and associated social relations is constrained in how it conceives global social relations. There is confusion as to whether civil society and global civil society refer to an analytical concept or an actually existing reality or both simultaneously. This chapter adds a missing dimension to these discussions through engaging a critical dialogue or dialectics between concept and reality in civil society research on the nature and extent of civil society particularly as they relate to global governance and contestation. The theoretical and practical activities of civil society, seen through a dialectical lens of the world, are related in the conclusion to a greater understanding of movement and change through the processes of transversal hegemony.

In classical pragmatism, evolution is understood in light of interrelation of an organism and its environment. The thinking and knowing ability of man is no exception. The purely human features – consciousness, reason, imagination, language and the use of signs – are treated as realization of the natural process of adaptation.Pragmatism maintains that reason does not exist separately from environment. Man uses his reason to better adapt and accommodate in human/nonhuman contexts. This ability is а biological need and necessity in his struggle for survival. In the constantly changing world, challenges, that man faces in his everyday experience, stimulate the appearance of new ways of perceiving the world and thinking of its transformations.Present-day technological innovations have transformed political and social relations in the global world. Among other things, Internet is of utmost importance for changes in face-to-face social contacts. In this respect it is responsible for alterations in man’s consciousness and his way of thinking. It led to modification and deformation of the very principle of human worldview and social interrelation. In philosophy this phenomenon is known as «сlip consciousness / thinking». It is roughly explained as а peculiar ability to simultaneously perceive the world through short, often unrelated messages in the form of video clips or TV news.Internet affected the volume and form of information exchange and dissemination because the structure of the information space had become different. It is filled with an unstoppable stream of messages which human mind cannot sensibly grasp. As а result attention becomes unfocused, shallow and imperceptive. On the other hand, people with clip consciousness are able to simultaneously perceive various information and do different things. The notion «сlip consciousness» has not yet been adequately defined and appreciated. It requires further analysis and evaluation on the principle of reasonable balance.

Subject Chinese overseas aid in the COVID-19 pandemic. Significance China is positioning itself as a leader in the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic, drawing on its industrial base to ramp up production and exports to equipment-starved countries around the world. Decades of manufacturing offshoring have left the United States unable to meet its own need for critical medical supplies and ensure the security of others during this crisis. Impacts There may be other industries besides medical supplies that are not generally seen as ‘critical’ but could become so in a time of crisis. Washington’s growing fixation on confronting Beijing will divert it from leadership in global governance. China’s diplomacy will be undermined by strident expressions of nationalism that show it as unprepared for global leadership. The more bilateral ties deteriorate, the fewer reasons Beijing and Washington have to step back from confrontation.

Purpose This paper aims to analyze the Egyptian revolution as an anti-systemic movement. It illustrates how Egypt’s position in the world-economy has affected its political economy orientation and led to the marginalization of critical masses, who launched the revolution. Design/methodology/approach The paper follows Wallerstein’s world-system analysis focusing on the anti-systemic movement concept. The paper analyzes the Egyptian case based on Annales school’s longue durée concept, which is a perspective to study developments of social relations historically. Findings The Egyptian revolution was not only against the autocratic regime but also against the power structure resulting from the neoliberal economic policies, introduced as a response to the capitalism crisis. It represented the voice of the forgotten. The revolution was one of the anti-systemic movements resisting the manifestations of the capitalist world-economy. Originality/value This paper aims at proving that the Egyptian revolution was an anti-systemic movement; which will continue to spread as a rejection to the world-system and to aspire a more democratic and egalitarian world. The current COVID-19 pandemic is exacerbating the crisis of the world-system.

Abstract Friedrich Kratochwil engages critically with the emergence of a global administrative law and its consequences for the democratic legitimacy of global governance. While he makes important contributions to our understanding of global governance, he does not sufficiently discuss the differences in the institutional design of new forms of global law-making and their consequences for the effectiveness and legitimacy of global governance. I elaborate on these limitations and outline a comparative research agenda on the emergence, design, and effectiveness of the diverse arrangements that constitute the complex institutional architecture of contemporary global governance.

In several late texts, Derrida meditated on Paul Celan's poem ‘Grosse, Glühende Wölbung’, in which the departure of the world is announced. Delving into the ‘origin’ and ‘history’ of the ‘conception’ of the world, this paper suggests that, for Derrida, the end of the world is determined by and from death—the death of the other. The death of the other marks, each and every time, the absolute end of the world.
