PurposeThis study aims to contribute to the body of scientific knowledge about teaching and promoting social entrepreneurship in higher education institutions (HEIs) based on a measurement before and after concluding an educational experience.Design/methodology/approachIt tests hypotheses to draw conclusions from analyzing the pre- and post-test results of three study cases with different training experiences, to know the characteristics of the 304 participants.FindingsThe study indicated that incorporating transversal social entrepreneurship projects in various courses resulted in students feeling more capable regarding their social entrepreneurship potential.Originality/valueThe study presents the analysis of social entrepreneur training in three different curricular study cases. The information obtained adds value to social entrepreneurship education research that takes social entrepreneurship beyond business schools.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify the effects of algorithm teaching on the problem-solving skills of deaf-hard hearing students. Design/methodology/approach In this research, a pre-test and post-test problem-solving scale was applied to the single group (16 deaf-hard hearing students at a secondary school level) that had received algorithm education. Pre-test and post-test results were compared in order to see whether there was a significant difference among students in terms of their problem-solving attitudes. Students’ levels of performing the applications were examined through observation forms and their opinions about algorithm teaching were received. Findings As a result of the research, it was determined that implemented algorithm teaching had a significant effect on improving the problem-solving skills of the students. Originality/value Scratch training can be administered as either a compulsory or an optional course for hearing students as the Scratch programme offers the opportunity of teaching algorithmic reasoning with games, making the courses entertaining and giving students the chance to create their own designs which helps to improve their creative problem-solving skills and their motivation accordingly. Scratch teaching can be beneficial in developing students’ problem-solving behaviours and creativity.

Abstract: A common form of dyslipidemia is often associated with cardiovascular disease which is hypertriglyceridemia. Triglycerides in the body is mainly used as energy storage for a variety of metabolic processes. Poco-poco gymnastics from North Sulawesi. The purpose of this study is to find out the influence of poco-poco gymnastics to triglyceride blood levels. Methods: This study is experimental using one group pre and post test design, the subjects were 25 female students year 2013 Science and Mathematic Faculty of Pharmacyof Sam Ratulangi University Manado who met the inclusion criterias. Data was analyzed using paired t test. Results: Based on the research that has done from 25 subjects it was obtained that there was a decrease in mean triglyceride levels before and after poco-poco gymnastics for four weeks. However, this decrease was not significant (p=0,366). Conclusion: There was a decrease in triglyceride levels after poco-poco exercises for four weeks but this is not significant.Keywords : poco-poco gymnastics, triglycerideAbstrak: Bentuk umum dislipidemia yang sering dikaitkan dengan penyakit kardiovaskuler yaitu hipertrigliseridemia. Trigliserida dalam tubuh terutama dipakai untuk menyediakan energi berbagai proses metabolik. Salah satu faktor yang dapat mempengaruhi kadar trigliserida yaitu olahraga. Senam poco-poco merupakan senam yang berasal dari Sulawesi Utara. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh senam poco-poco terhadap kadar trigliserida darah. Metode: Penelitian ini bersifat eksperimental dengan rancangan one group pre and post test dengan jumlah subjek penelitian 25 mahasiswi Program Studi Farmasi Fakultas MIPA Universitas Sam Ratulangi Manado yang memenuhi kriteria. Data dianalisis dengan uji t berpasangan. Hasil: Berdasarkan penelitian yang dilakukan pada 25 subjek penelitian diperoleh hasil yaitu terjadi penurunan rata-rata kadar trigliserida sebelum dan sesudah senam poco-poco selama empat minggu. Namun penurunan ini secara statistik tidak bermakna (p=0,366). Simpulan: Terjadi penurunan kadar trigliserida setelah latihan senam poco-poco selama empat minggu namun penurunan ini secara statistik tidak bermakna.Kata Kunci: senam poco-poco, trigliserida

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to focus with the university-based business plan competition (BPC) and proposes how the theory of effectuation might inform a new model. Such a purpose is timely given the under-challenged nature of the BPC methodology. Design/methodology/approach Extant literature pertaining to business planning and the business plan within entrepreneurship education and effectuation is reviewed; numerous conceptual issues which undermine BPC provision in its traditional form are then identified. In response to these identified issues, a series of principles which could underpin the introduction of an effectuation-led business coopetition (EBC) are outlined. Findings Strong emphasis on business plan production within a conventional BPC model raises questions about its capacity to release the entrepreneurial potential of the higher education institution student and provide them with an authentic and relevant entrepreneurial learning experience. Through using the ideas of effectuation to rethink provision, the action of business plan production can usefully be replaced with the action of business implementation. As well as facilitate a beneficial shift from competition to coopetition-based entrepreneurship education. Originality/value This paper valuably critiques the efficacy of a commonly employed yet under-challenged methodology for entrepreneurship education; the BPC. The propositions offered can guide competition provision in a more authentic, realistic and relevant way that is potentially better suited to inspiring and supporting entrepreneurial new venturing amongst students and graduates now rather than in the future. The paper thus has practical value to those designing and delivering competition-based entrepreneurship education.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to introduce the current state of education in the field of social enterprise in Slovakia and its support, share the experience of social entrepreneurship education providers and formulate recommendations for the development of human resources in the context of supporting social enterprise. Design/methodology/approach This paper is presented as a case study. It is based on the initial experience of education providers in the field of social entrepreneurship in Slovakia, as the concept of integrating social entrepreneurship into education in Slovak conditions is currently in the phase of gradual establishment. Findings One of the biggest barriers of the development of education is insufficient awareness and overall promotion of social enterprise in Slovakia. The general public lacks awareness on the topic of social enterprise and a general platform on social enterprise, which would provide information on the possibilities of formal and non-formal education, is missing. Research limitations/implications The findings of this paper are based on the limited experience of social entrepreneurship education providers, as the systematic concept of integrating social entrepreneurship into education in Slovak conditions is currently in the phase of gradual establishment. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study, which provides an overview of the present situation of education in the field of social enterprise from the perspective of the experience of the addressed organizations, their opinions and perception.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present an adaptation of a program that is at the intersection of two dynamic force fields. The first relates to imperatives impinging upon and inherent in higher education. The second ties to the concept of ecosystems as spaces for aligning actors and resources to create value. Design/methodology/approach Tables I-III present pre-test and post-test means and p-values for the paired sample t-tests for the measures. Findings As expected, post-test means are consistently significantly higher (or lower depending on item wording) for a shift in beliefs away from self-censoring and prejudging ideas during ideation and more toward greater openness in the ideation process. Originality/value The paper examines the outcome of an educational program.

The visual diet hypothesis suggests that exposure to a certain body type increases our preference for that type of body, and exposure to ideal bodies is proposed to lead to body dissatisfaction. Here we examined the effect of exposure to high/low muscularity bodies on muscularity preferences and, subsequently, on body satisfaction in men, as well as exploring how men’s pre-existing cognitions around their bodies might moderate susceptibility to these effects. Study 1 participants (80 women, 84 men) viewed high or low muscularity images of real and CGI male bodies and reported their preferences for pairs of bodies varying in muscularity before and after. They additionally completed the Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire 4. Data replicated previous results showing that viewing low muscularity images reduces preferences for muscularity in participants. This was significantly moderated by SATAQ in men, such that those with higher internalisation of cultural body ideals (higher SATAQ scores) showed this effect more strongly. In Study 2, participants (81 Men) completed the same task, with the change that some viewed the CGI bodies, and some the real bodies, during the manipulation, and also completed the Drive for Muscularity Scale at pre-test and the Body Image States Scale at pre- and post-test. Results again showed that exposure to low muscularity bodies reduces muscularity preferences but there was no moderating effect of SATAQ or of drive for muscularity. There was also no impact of viewing the images on body satisfaction.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to describe the implementation of a print management system to control costs and reduce waste associated with printing practices.Design/methodology/approachA paper collection study found that 8 percent of pages printed in the library were never claimed. A print management system was implemented requiring print jobs to be manually released by users. Statistics on toner lifespan and number of pages printed before and after the system was implemented were compared.FindingsThe print management system reduced the total number of pages printed in a semester by 32 percent from Fall 2009 to Fall 2011 and increased the lifespan of toner cartridges so they would perform more efficiently.Practical implicationsImplementing a print management system without charging students a printing fee reduces the amount of wasted paper and the costs associated with purchasing paper and toner for printing services.Originality/valueThe paper describes the implementation of a print management system in a library that has substantially reduced the number of pages printed from library computers and the amount of toner used. The authors believe they have made a significant impact on reducing a primary area of waste.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the motivations of social entrepreneurs. It explores the case of the Gathering in Ireland in 2013, when against a backdrop of recession, the national Government encouraged individuals and communities to organize events and invite the Diaspora to visit Ireland as a way of helping the country to revitalize. Some 5,000 events took place across the country during the year, and this paper examines this in the context of social entrepreneurship. Three research questions are posed: Who were these tourism and social entrepreneurs who organized events as a result of the Gathering? What motivated them to engage in these activities? Will this social entrepreneurship activity be maintained beyond 2013 and how has it been impacted by the Gathering? Design/methodology/approach The empirical research was conducted in two counties in Ireland, Co. Kerry and Co. Westmeath. The research tools used were key informant interviews, a survey of event organizers and focus groups. Findings Key findings show that the Gathering has resulted in the emergence of new social entrepreneurs, but it has also had a positive impact on those who had run their events before, as it made them be more strategic in the way they planned and ran their event and also resulted in them thinking about these events in terms of tourists rather than just the local community. They also developed new skills which will aid their future development. It is clear that social entrepreneurs can play a fundamental role in the development of tourism destinations, and this is an important topic for researchers in tourism to be concerned about. Originality/value The originality of this paper lies in the fact that it addresses the issue of motivation of social entrepreneurs and challenges us to think more about how these types of entrepreneurs identify the problem that they will address. Furthermore, this case shows that the motivation for such action can be prompted by a national strategy, rather than as the literature heretofore represented it as an innate motivation that materialized and developed within particular individuals.

Purpose The practice of social entrepreneurship has grown rapidly around the world, including in Malaysia where it is still considered to be at an early stage. Nevertheless, little is known about the career transition among youth who choose careers as social entrepreneurs. The purpose of this study is to explore the challenges faced by youth social entrepreneurs who run social enterprises in Malaysia. Design/methodology/approach This study used a qualitative approach to collect and analyse data to answer the research questions. Seven youth social entrepreneurs were interviewed until data saturation was met. An interview guide was created for the purposes of conducting the interviews. The interviews were recorded using a voice recorder. Data were transcribed verbatim and grouped in order to identify the codings, categories and themes. Findings The findings show the career transition to become a social entrepreneur, as well as the major challenges that youth social entrepreneurs face, which include acclimatising to the life and career of a social entrepreneur and not getting support from family. Practical implications The study findings are also significant for presenting valuable data on the experience of the developing social entrepreneur. The qualitative nature of the study provides valuable experiential insight into the lives and struggles of young social entrepreneurs in Malaysia. The findings will allow local authorities and social entrepreneurship regulatory agencies to design initiatives and plan actions intended to overcome the challenges. Originality/value This study makes an original contribution by showing that the process of career development as a social entrepreneur has given meaning to the informants. Despite presenting many challenges, social entrepreneurship has reinforced the role of youth social entrepreneurs, especially in relation to social responsibility.

Purpose The purpose of this paper was to ascertain how social entrepreneurs were required to recognize their new ventures’ scope and scale of operations. The firm boundary was based upon two dimensions, namely, the scope of the offering and its scale. The objective of this research was to ascertain the thinking regarding this of social entrepreneurs engaged through technology-based social entrepreneurship (TBSE). Design/methodology/approach This study conducted an in-depth interview of 26 technology entrepreneurs engaged in social entrepreneurship ventures in India. The interview was carried out based upon a semi-structured open-ended questionnaire. This study undertook thematic and relational content analysis to develop a model of technology-based social entrepreneurs’ venture scoping and scaling. Findings This study found that the antecedent variables were the level of support perceived by social entrepreneur from government and at the industry level. Furthermore, the variables’ entrepreneurial and market orientation of social entrepreneurs were found to be the independent variables. These four variables in turn determined the explorative and exploitative horizon of the technology-based social entrepreneurs. Finally, an interplay of these variables ascertained the perspectives of social entrepreneurs engaged in TBSE regarding the notion of their firm’s scope and scale. Research limitations/implications The theoretical insights developed in this research study provided an integrated theoretical perspective accommodating both environmental perspectives (industry support and government support) and organizational perspectives (entrepreneurial and market aspects). This was in context of TBSE. Practical implications The insights from this research study could provide a robust and comprehensive understanding to social entrepreneurs regarding the strategic thinking towards scale and scope for a technology-based social venture. Originality/value To the best of the author’s knowledge, this study was one of the first theoretical works in TBSE towards scaling versus scoping perspectives.
