Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the non-Newtonian physical model of Eyring–Powell fluid for the rheology inside a long circular pipe. Design/methodology/approach Although many research studies are available now on this topic, none gives full solutions explicitly accessible. Findings It is proven here that the hydrodynamically fully developed fluid flow acknowledges the exact solution, influenced by a non-Newtonian parameter as well as the adverse pressure gradient parameter prevailing the flow domain. These parameters are unified under a new parameter known as the generalized Eyring–Powell parameter. Without the presented analytical data, it is impossible to detect the validity range of such physical non-Newtonian solutions, which is shown to be restricted. Originality/value Full solution of the energy equation for the thermally fully developed laminar regime is also presented under the assumption of uniform wall temperature at the pipe wall. The physical impacts of pertinent parameters on the rheology of the non-Newtonian fluid with regard to the Reynolds number, Darcy friction factor and pressure drop are easy to interpret from the derived formulae. Particularly, a decrease in the centerline velocity and an increase in the rate of heat transfer are clarified for the considered flow configuration.

The objective of this paper is to study the characteristic of a circular tube with a built-in arc belt on fluid flow and heat transfer in uniform wall temperature flows. Numerical simulations for hydrodynamically laminar flow was direct ran at Re between 600 and 1800. Preliminary results on velocity and temperature statistics for uniform wall temperature show that, arc belt can swirl the pipe fluid, so that the fluid at the center of the tube and the fluid of the boundary layer of the wall can mix fully, and plays the role of enhanced heat transfer, but also significantly increases the resistance of the fluid and makes the resistance coefficient of the enhanced tube greater than smooth tube. The combination property PEC is all above 1.5.

A solution methodology is developed to obtain three-dimensional fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics in the entrance region of a rhombic duct. Owing to the complexity of the geometry, the literature results are limited to the fully developed values. The numerical methodology is based on an algebraic coordinate transformation technique, which maps the complex cross section onto a rectangle, coupled with a calculation procedure for three-dimensional parabolic flows, which reduces the problem to a series of two-dimensional problems. The Nusselt number and friction factor results are obtained for boundary conditions of uniform wall heat flux and uniform wall temperature. The asymptotic values of the Nusselt numbers and friction factors approach the available fully developed results. The entry length results for the limiting case of φ = 90 deg are in perfect agreement with the available experimental and numerical results for a rectangular duct.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to investigate the thermal response of the laminar non-Newtonian fluid flow in elliptical duct subjected to a third-kind boundary condition with a particular interest to a non-Newtonian nanofluid case. The effects of Biot number, aspect ratio and fluid flow behavior index on the heat transfer have been examined carefully.Design/methodology/approachFirst, the mathematical problem has been formulated in dimensionless form, and then the curvilinear elliptical coordinates transform is applied to transform the original elliptical shape of the duct to an equivalent rectangular numerical domain. This transformation has been adopted to overcome the inherent mathematical deficiency due to the dependence of the ellipsis contour on the variables x and y. The yielded problem has been successfully solved using the dynamic alternating direction implicit method. With the available temperature field, several parameters have been computed for the analysis purpose such as bulk temperature, Nusselt number and heat transfer coefficient.FindingsThe results showed that the use of elliptical duct enhances significantly the heat transfer coefficient and reduces the duct’s length needed to achieve the thermal equilibrium. For some cases, the reduction in the duct’s length can reach almost 50 per cent compared to the circular pipe. In addition, the analysis of the non-Newtonian nanofluid case showed that the addition of nanoparticles to the base fluid improves the heat transfer coefficient up to 25 per cent. The combination of using an elliptical duct and the addition of nanoparticles has a spectacular effect on the overall heat transfer coefficient with an enhancement of 50-70 per cent. From the engineering applications view, the results demonstrate the potential of elliptical duct in building light-weighted compact shell-and-tube heat exchangers.Originality/valueA complete investigation of the heat transfer of a fully developed laminar flow of power law fluids in elliptical ducts subject to the convective boundary condition with application to non-Newtonian nanofluids is addressed.

First and second order slip flow models in rectangular microchannels heated at constant and uniform wall temperature are studied. The velocity and temperature profiles for hydrodynamically and thermally developed incompressible slip flow regime available in literature are used. The average nondimensional slip velocity and temperature jump are found by using first and second order slip flow models. The average Nusselt number is also derived by using both first and second order slip flow models. The effects of Knudsen number, aspect ratio and second order slip flow model on the heat transfer characteristics of microchannel are explored.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the three-dimensional natural convection and entropy generation in the rectangular cuboid cavities included by chamfered triangular partition made by polypropylene. Design/methodology/approach The enclosure is filled by multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)-H2O nanofluid and air as two immiscible fluids. The finite volume approach is used for computation. The fluid flow and heat transfer are considered with combination of local entropy generation due to fluid friction and heat transfer. Moreover, a numerical method is developed based on three-dimensional solution of Navier–Stokes equations. Findings Effects of side ratio of triangular partitions (SR = 0.5, 1 and 2), Rayleigh number (103 < Ra < 105) and solid volume fraction (f = 0.002, 0.004 and 0.01 Vol.%) of nanofluid are investigated on both natural convection characteristic and volumetric entropy generation. The results show that the partitions can be a suitable method to control fluid flow and energy consumption, and three-dimensional solutions renders more accurate results. Originality/value The originality of this work is to study the three-dimensional natural convection and entropy generation of a stratified system.

The problem considered is that of determining the heat losses from a gas flowing turbulently in a poorly insulated pipe where the heat lost from the outer surface is by free convection and radiation. The approach employed in solving the heat equation is analogous to that first introduced by Latzko for the solution of the uniform wall temperature problem. Later, in 1957, Fettis obtained a solution to the same problem in terms of Jacobi polynomials. A method for coupling the inner convection with the environment is given in the later portion of the paper. The results obtained for a numerical case are also presented.
