PurposeThis study examines the effects of comparable companies, within the same industry, on cash-holding (CH) levels of a specific firm in the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET). Peer effects are hypothesized to affect a firm's average CH levels.Design/methodology/approachThe authors use data of listed firms in the Thai stock markets from 1995 to 2018. The sample consists of 5,277 firm-year observations. The authors perform robustness tests by incorporating gross domestic product, economy and competitiveness.FindingsPeer firms' CH levels correspond positively to the specific firm's CH. This strengthens further for firms with high cash flow volatility during periods of high competition. Unfavorable economic periods also motivate the association between a firm's CH and peer firms' CH.Practical implicationsA policy on CH should account for cash held by peer firms. Firms can justify their CH policy as compatible with peers' cash flows, especially during periods of competitiveness and an unfavorable economy.Originality/valueThe authors provide novel evidence on how emerging markets' CH levels differ from those in developed markets and propose adjusted explanations for the rivalry- and information-based theories. The findings add substantial knowledge to corporate finance by arguing that CH policies are based on peer firms' strategic moves.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine how pre-IPO cash flow and earnings volatility influence both post-IPO pricing and valuation. This paper provides an empirical extension of Pástor and Veronesi’s (2003, 2005) argument that uncertainty surrounding a private firm’s expected profitability can impact how the firm is valued in the IPO aftermarket. Design/methodology/approach This paper includes a sample of 695 IPOs between 1996 and 2011. Pre-IPO financial statement data are hand collected from the EDGAR database. Pre-IPO cash flow and earnings volatility is computed using the standard deviation of the firm’s three years of cash flows and earnings prior to the IPO. Tobin’s Q serves as a measure of post-IPO firm valuation. This paper includes two subsamples to account for the “hot” IPO market of the late 1990s. Findings Firms with higher pre-IPO cash flow volatility are associated with higher post-IPO aftermarket valuations. This result holds for both the “hot” IPO and the later sub-sample. Pre-IPO earnings volatility does not influence aftermarket valuations, suggesting that only the uncertainty surrounding cash flows serves as a salient measure to IPO investors. Finally, IPO underpricing is associated with pre-IPO cash flow volatility, suggesting another channel in which IPO pricing is influenced. Research limitations/implications The hand collection for this paper is laborious and is limited to yearly cash flow and earnings numbers. The paper documents that quarterly and yearly cash flow and earnings volatility measures are highly correlated for the select stocks that allow for such testing. Further, a broader sample that accounts for more international IPO issues might corroborate the findings in this paper. Practical implications This study shows that investors both initially price and value IPO firms base on their pre-IPO cash flow volatility. Originality/value This is the first paper to examine the direct link between pre-IPO cash flow and earnings volatility on IPO aftermarket valuation and IPO pricing.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of Shariah compliance status on corporate cash holding decision. Design/methodology/approach This study applies ordinary least square and generalized method of moments regression models for a sample of 178 Malaysian listed firms over the period 2008–2017. Findings The results show that Shariah compliance has positive impact on the level of cash reserves of firms. It is also found that Shariah-compliant (SC) firms quickly adjust their level of cash holdings toward a target level than non–Shariah-compliant (NSC) firms. These results can be explained by the restrictions imposed by Shariah rules on firms to sustain their compliance status. Further, the results reveal that SC firms are likely to hold more cash out of their cash flows. This is the expected result, as the firms operating within the ambit of Shariah rulings and regulations face external financing constraints. Practical implications This study has important implications for managers, policymakers and regulators. For managers, the study is an important reference to understand and design cash management policies by considering restrictions imposed by Shariah regulations. In particular, managers should pay more attention to periods of credit crunch and weak economic conditions in which SC firms may be exposed to greater bankruptcy risks. For policymakers and regulators, this study may be useful in assessing the effect of the restrictions imposed by Shariah law on firm’s cash holding decision. Therefore, in an effort to increase the supply of external financing available to SC firms, policymakers should encourage the issuing of Islamic financial products. Originality/value This paper focuses on SC firms where financial constraints are bound to be more stringent than for NSC firms. It explores the implications of relevant Islamic principles on corporate cash holdings.

The article examines the pattern of cash holdings of 266 Indian companies comprised in the S&P BSE 500 index for the period 2005–2015 to understand the factors that influence the level of cash balances, to estimate the amount of excess cash held by these companies and to analyse how these companies spend their excess cash. The sample companies hold approximately 12 per cent of their total assets as cash in 2015. The pattern of cash holdings of the sample companies is supported by the static trade-off and the financing hierarchy model. Consistent with earlier evidence, firms with large cash balances have strong growth opportunities, larger cash flows, higher cash flow volatility, higher leverage, higher level of promoter holding and belong to the government-owned sector. Companies that have more liquid assets other than cash have more tangible assets and pay more to their shareholders hold lower cash balances. However, contrary to earlier evidence, size of the firm is not related to the amount of cash holding. Further, firms with large cash balances have higher leverage. The study does not find association of cash holding with many other variables found to have association with cash holding in developed markets. A large number of the firms in the sample hold cash in excess of what is predicted on the basis of firm’s characteristics. These companies manage their cash balances in a manner that is not consistent with maximization of shareholders’ wealth.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to observe whether the entrenchment of managers can affect firms’ dividend disbursement decisions and investor sentiment in the Tunisia context. Design/methodology/approach The sample includes all non-financial listed stocks in the Tunisia stock exchange during the years 2004–2017. Moreover, the entrenchment of managers is measured by five proxy explained the managers rooting from all listed firms. The propensity to pay dividends is measured by the dividend yield. Findings The findings yield qualitatively consistent with the previous research. After controlling for the effect of a manager’s behavior and different entrenchment phase, the result shows that entrepreneurial the firm’s decision to pay dividends could be influenced by the managers’ entrenchment. Research limitations/implications The result is limited at the level of the non-financial companies listed in the BVMT, but in future studies, the investigation with other countries can be compared. Practical implications Moreover, investors in Tunisia show their preference for a dividend to self-control and satisfaction and increase their profit, especially in an abnormal economic situation explained by the Tunisian political crisis. Originality/value The originality of this paper is to investigate both the important role of the entrenchment and cycle life of the manager on the decision to distribute dividends and the investor sentiment. Moreover, the author’s problem may be a reference for future investigation talking about the managers’ psychology like opportunism.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine how Moroccan institutional investors view dividend policy. It discusses the importance these investors attach to the dividend policy of their investee firms, how much influence they exercise in shaping investee firms’ dividend policies, their reactions to changes in dividends, and their views on various explanations for paying dividends. Design/methodology/approach A mail survey provides a respondent and firm profile and responses to 28 questions involving various explanations for paying dividends and 30 questions on different dividend issues. Findings Institutional investors attach substantial importance to dividend policy and prefer high dividend payments. Although liquidity needs are a major driver, taxes play little role in shaping dividend preferences. Respondents agree with multiple explanations for paying dividends giving the strongest support to catering, bird-in-the-hand, life cycle, signaling, and agency theories. Research limitations/implications Despite a high response rate, the number of respondents limits partitioning the sample and testing for significant differences between different groups. Practical implications The lack of communication between Casablanca Stock Exchange (CSE) listed firms and institutional investors may depress stock prices and increase volatility. The results suggest agency problems and a weak governance environment at the CSE. Originality/value This study documents the importance that institutional investors place on dividend policy, their reactions to changes in their investees’ dividend policy, and the methods used to influence these firms. It extends previous research by reporting the level of support Moroccan institutional investors give to various explanations for paying dividends.

Purpose This study aims to examine the value relevance of earnings in terms of predicting the value variables such as cash flow, capital investment (CI), dividend and stock return under the Indian institutional settings. Design/methodology/approach The study used panel Granger causality tests to examine causality relationships among variables and panel data regression models to check the statistical associations between earnings and value variables. Findings Based on a data set of 7,280 Bombay Stock Exchange-listed firm-years spanning over ten years from March 2009 to March 2018, the results show higher sensitivity of earnings toward cash flows, CI, divided and stock return and vice-versa. Further, the findings deduced from the empirical results demonstrate that earnings are positively related to value variables. Overall, the results established that earnings are value-relevant and have predictive ability to forecast the value variables that facilitate investors in portfolio valuation. The results are consistent with the predictive view of the value relevance of earnings. Several robustness checks confirm these results. Originality/value This study brings new empirical evidence from a distinct capital market, India, and provides a new facet to the value relevance debate in terms of its prediction view. The study is among earlier attempts that jointly measure the ability of earnings in forecasting different value variables by taking a uniform sample of firms at the same period. Hence, the study provides a comprehensive view of the predictive ability of reported earnings.

Purpose In the context of public-private partnerships (PPPs), it has been argued that the standard valuation framework produces a paradox whereby government appears to be made better off by taking on more systematic risk. This has led to a range of approaches being applied in practice, none of which are consistent with the standard valuation approach. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that these approaches are flawed and unnecessary. Design/methodology/approach The authors step through the proposed alternative valuation approaches and demonstrate their inconsistencies and illogical outcomes, using theory, logic and mathematical proof. Findings In this paper, the authors demonstrate that the proposed (alternative) approaches suffer from internal inconsistencies and produce illogical outcomes in some cases. The authors also show that there is no problem with the current accepted theory and that the apparent paradox is not the result of a deficiency in the current theory but is rather caused by its misapplication in practice. In particular, the authors show that the systematic risk of cash flows is frequently mis-estimated, and the correction of this error solves the apparent paradox. Practical implications Over the past 20 years, PPP activity around the globe amounts to many billions of dollars. Decisions on major infrastructure funding are of enormous social and economic importance. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to demonstrate the flaws and internal inconsistencies with proposed valuation framework alternatives for the purposes of evaluating PPPs.

This paper examines the relationship between financial constraints and the stock returns explaining the pricing of stock through financially constrained and unconstrained firms in Pakistan. Three proxies; total assets, tangible to total assets and cash holding to total assets ratios) have been used for financial constraints and the study tried to investigate that either the investors are compensated for taking the extra risk or not in Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX). We find that the financially constrained firms don’t earn higher returns when their capital structure is heavy with liquid assets and their cash flows are more than the unconstrained firms in PSX. Moreover, the time series results showed that the risk-adjusted returns of the most constrained firms give the mix and somewhat negative and significant and insignificant results for the Pakistani firms listed in PSX sorted based on tangible to total assets and Cash holding to total asset ratios. Purpose This paper aims to assess auditor narcissism’s effect on audit market competition (auditor concentration, clients’ concentration and competitive pressure). Design/methodology/approach This paper’s method is descriptive-correlational based on published information from listed firms on the Tehran Stock Exchange from 2012 to 2018 using a sample of 188 firms (1,310 observations). The method used for hypothesis testing is linear regression using panel data. Findings The results show a negative and significant relationship between auditor narcissism and audit market competition and its indices, including auditor concentration, clients’ concentration and competitive pressure. Moreover, a positive and significant relationship was observed between audit quality and audit market competition and its indices, including auditor concentration, client concentration and competitive pressure. Originality/value To analyzes competition indices in the audit market (auditor concentration, clients’ concentration and competitive pressure). The variable is assessed once more using the exploratory factor analysis of the so-called three variables single variable, named audit market competition. So the central question of the study is investigated within a broader sense. Moreover, as the present study is carried out in the emergent financial markets with extremely competitive audit markets to figure out the effect of auditors’ intrinsic characteristics on such markets’ competitiveness, it can provide useful information in this field.

Purpose – The aim of this paper is to examine the nexus between firm-specific attributes and a company’s decision to setup a separate risk management committee (RMC) as a sub-committee of the board within the context of an emerging economy, South Africa. Design/methodology/approach – The authors analyse data extracted from audited annual financial reports of 181 non-financial firms listed on the Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE) by using logistic regression technique. Findings – The results show a strong positive relationship between the existence of a separate RMC and board independence, board size, firm size and industry type. However, the authors fail to find support for the hypotheses that independent board chairman, auditor reputation, reporting risk and financial leverage have an influence on a firm’s decision to establish RMC as a separately standing committee in the board structure. The findings signify the role of costs associated with information asymmetry, agency, upkeep of a standalone RMC, damage to the reputation of directors and industry-specific idiosyncrasies on a firm’s decision to form a separate RMC. Research limitations/implications – As in most empirical studies, this study focuses on listed firms. Nonetheless, future studies that focus on non-listed firms could add additional insights to the literature. Investigating the role of firm-specific governance attributes other than those considered in the present study (e.g. gender of directors, ownership structure, etc.) could further enhance the understanding of antecedents of risk-management practices. Practical implications – The findings have practical implications for the investment community in assessing the quality of risk management practices of companies listed on the JSE. Furthermore, the results provide insights that are potentially useful to the King Committee and other corporate governance regulators in South Africa in their effort to improve corporate governance practices. Originality/value – The present study focuses on firms drawn from an emerging economy which has profound economic, institutional, political and cultural differences compared to advanced economies, which have received a disproportionately higher share of attention in prior studies. Thus, the study contributes additional insights to the literature on corporate risk management from the perspective of an emerging economy.
