Purpose The purpose of this paper is to widen the discussion about the ongoing paradigm shift in global higher education. Design/methodology/approach The paper discusses and gives examples on several major changes and potential future developments within higher education. Findings Several major changes have taken place within higher education in a short time. Financial restraints leading to shorter accountability periods, mass education and research, as well as increased competition through e-enhanced globalization, have changed the field of higher education profoundly. It simultaneously faces requirements to produce a higher level of competence, shorten the implementation periods and to offer this to an increasing number of participants with fewer resources. Thus, it should be considered if the mission of higher education institutions has changed and what that mission should be. Research limitations/implications The paper is written from a culturally limited point of view (Finland/Nordic countries/Europe) and does not rely on empirical research findings. Social implications The potential paradigm shift has major social implications globally. It may change the way we understand and operate higher education during the next few decades. Originality/value A lot of the presented ideas have been discussed before in other articles. However, the potential implications as a whole have not yet been adequately discussed in scientific processes.

Purpose This study aims to provide a theoretical account of the nexus of religion and entrepreneurship in hospitality and tourism (H&T) by considering the influences of religion on entrepreneurial motivation, acquisition of resources for entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial behaviour. Design/methodology/approach The authors synthesise research and theory on religion and entrepreneurship and apply it within H&T, taking into account the specificities of the industry. Specifically, they pooled together relevant theory and empirical research findings which they summarised to identify points of convergence and divergence, before refining the data to allow for further theoretical insights to be gained. Findings The authors suggest that religion may positively or negatively influence entrepreneurship; in particular, they identify various modes of religion influences, which offer insights into how religion may encourage, sustain and amplify entrepreneurship or alternatively inhibit entrepreneurship. Originality/value Religion offers an important yet underused lens for understanding the activities and mechanisms influencing entrepreneurship in the rapidly evolving H&T industry. This study identifies different aspects of the two multidimensional and interdisciplinary concepts of religion and entrepreneurship and offers new insights into the relationship between the two within the context of H&T.

Purpose This paper aims to engage with the concept of resilience as theorized by David Chandler in his book Resilience: The Governance of Complexity by drawing from the theory of governmentality presented by Michel Foucault and Jonathan Joseph. Design/methodology/approach Evolving from classical liberalism to neoliberalism and from natural sciences to social sciences, the term “resilience” raises many questions about its sustainability in terms of its meaning and complexity. While most scholars tend to underscore the significance and practicality of the term, a few scholars argue that it is a failed dogma with neoliberal characteristics. As this is a theory-based study, its methodology involves close readings of academic texts produced mainly by David Chandler, Michel Foucault and Jonathan Joseph. Findings The central argument in this paper is though Chandler convincingly explains the paradigm shift of the term resilience from classical to neoliberal, his theorizing lacks the understanding that the type of power and governmentality involved in individual freedom, autonomy and complexity are actually parts of the neoliberal state. Hence, the buzzword resilience today is actually an extension of the same neoliberal thought. Originality/value First, the author attempts to critically engage with the term resilience from a sociological point of view using purposively selected academic literature. Second, the paper attempts to bring Chandler’s conceptualization on resilience into the disaster context and evaluates its practicality within the tenets of neoliberalism by drawing on Joseph’s and Foucault’s theorizations.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe lessons learned from a homecare practice for frail elderly people. Design/methodology/approach – It is strictly a description of a point of view in respect of care of frailty designed to avoid institution. Findings – Generally, frail elderly patients choose care focused on comfort and function as opposed to the traditional systematic healthcare goals of rescue and prevention. This choice should be respected. Research limitations/implications – There are no formal research findings. Practical implications – Cost-saving as well as improvement in care is possible through team-based relationship-oriented homecare of the frail elderly where that care emphasizes comfort and function. Originality/value – This paper is authored by Dr John Sloan and is entirely original.

Purpose – Considers the new Trailblazer apprenticeships being offered by Barclays and Santander. Design/methodology/approach – Examines the reasons for the programs and the results they are expected to achieve. Findings – Explains that the three-year Trailblazer qualification enables young people to achieve the sixth-level apprenticeship, equivalent to a university degree. Practical implications – Demonstrates the wide range of career options open to successful candidates. Social implications – Highlights a useful route into training and employment for young people, some of whom have spurned conventional higher education and training. Originality/value – Shows how two banks are implementing the government’s Trailblazer apprenticeship scheme.

Purpose Boltanski and Thevenot’s Economies of Worth framework and the project world introduced by Boltanski and Chiapello are well known in the fields of sociology and organization theory, but have been largely ignored in the project management literature. The purpose of this paper is to introduce them into the literature on projects and projectification. Design/methodology/approach The framework and the project world are described in detail and compared with two streams of writings that are well known in the field of project management: Making Projects Critical and the project as a complex self-organizing emergent network. Findings The paper shows that the framework and the project world are relevant to research in project management and the understanding of the projectification of society. Research limitations/implications The framework and the concepts presented could be used in both conceptual and empirical research in project management, particularly the analysis of projects in which disputes occur among stakeholders. Several paths that future developments could follow are identified. Practical implications The framework can be used to better understand disputes and identify how they can be resolved or compromises can be found. Social implications The analysis by Boltanski and Chiapello showed that the evolution of management practice is linked to changes in society and in the dominant ideology. Originality/value The paper introduces a very valuable framework into the project literature.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore perceptions by higher education (HE) senior professors and managers of their role in preparing graduates for entry to the labour market. By providing a theoretical and empirical overview of the functional role of HE institutions in preparing graduates for work, the paper designs an own research framework for future developments in this area. Design/methodology/approach – The conclusions in the paper are based on a literature review and approximately 240 semi-structured interviews with HE professors and managers from six European countries and from six different study fields. The results are broadly compared with an international survey of graduates from 20, mainly European, countries. Findings – The senior HE professors and managers see their own role in supporting graduates’ careers in a surprisingly intuitive way. There are some important differences and similarities among the study fields, although they are generally not motivated to apply an evidence-based approach to study and programme developments. Originality/value – This paper is based on the results of a three-year survey of the European research network, and two international conferences comprising more than 100 contributions from over 30, mainly European, countries.

Purpose Taking the researchers’ perspective, the purpose of this paper is to examine the types of context information needed to preserve data’s meaning in ways that support data reuse. Design/methodology/approach This paper is based on a qualitative study of 105 researchers from three disciplinary communities: quantitative social science, archaeology and zoology. The study focused on researchers’ most recent data reuse experience, particularly what they needed when deciding whether to reuse data. Findings Findings show that researchers mentioned 12 types of context information across three broad categories: data production information (data collection, specimen and artifact, data producer, data analysis, missing data, and research objectives); repository information (provenance, reputation and history, curation and digitization); and data reuse information (prior reuse, advice on reuse and terms of use). Originality/value This paper extends digital curation conversations to include the preservation of context as well as content to facilitate data reuse. When compared to prior research, findings show that there is some generalizability with respect to the types of context needed across different disciplines and data sharing and reuse environments. It also introduces several new context types. Relying on the perspective of researchers offers a more nuanced view that shows the importance of the different context types for each discipline and the ways disciplinary members thought about them. Both data producers and curators can benefit from knowing what to capture and manage during data collection and deposit into a repository.

PurposeCurrently, it is unclear how omnichannel retailers can create a last mile offer that is both attractive and sustainable from an economic and environmental point of view. The purpose of this paper is to explore to which extent consumers are willing to adopt last mile options that are more sustainable and how these options should be composed to remain attractive.Design/methodology/approachTo this end, the authors surveyed a representative sample of Belgian consumers, using choice-based conjoint experiments, and analysed their preferences structures.FindingsConsumers’ preference goes out to free, next day delivery to an address of choice, on regular office hours during the week. However, when free delivery and return are offered, consumers are willing to collect their orders themselves or wait longer for their orders to arrive.Practical implicationsThe research findings are important for retailers that (plan to) operate an omnichannel model. For omnichannel retailers with a dense store network, the results indicate that consumers accept their store network as pick-up and return locations, allowing retailers to create a more efficient and sustainable supply chain in which their online and offline activities can be combined.Originality/valueThe research findings contribute to current literature and practice by combining “planet” and “profit” components of sustainability in last mile transport and applying it in the novel omnichannel environment.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the evolving of integrated care, focussing on developments in why what matters to the patient matters and how to better understand the value the patient brings to and anticipates from integrated care. Design/methodology/approach A descriptive piece that draws on relevant research findings, literature, reports and health policy. Findings Although integrated care is a contemporary policy agenda, it is bringing back to the forefront the benefits of a population health planning approach. The shift in the health systems focus from inward looking to outward looking is promising, albeit has taken 25 years and is still evolving. Leadership is being demonstrated, however, a shared vision is elusive and not all voices are being heard. The development of a narrative that defines integrated care from the patient’s point of view is an important step. Next is better understanding the immediate and anticipatory public value integrated care offers. Originality/value This is a novel perspective of an enduring health reform policy concept. Currently the literature is thin.

This book, consisting of nine chapters, is the result of multiple theoretical and empirical research carried out by students in the post-graduate program in education (PPGE) at Universidade Nove de Julho (UNINOVE). The object of the research was to carry out a study on the new models of higher education, implemented in Brazil between 2005 and 2013. The studies carried out focus, above all, on institutional principles, student access policies, the internationalization process, quota policies, and mechanisms for inclusion in higher education for public school students. These were studies that used, as a theoretical basis, epistemological models of a counter-hegemonic character and, from a methodological point of view, an essentially qualitative approach. The studies showed, generically, the possibility of building other models of higher education capable of overcoming the elitism, characteristic of traditional universities. The inclusion of students from public school reveals that it is possible to make higher education a right for everyone, democratizing it, in the sense of establishing social and cognitive justice.
