Limited currency will hinder carmakers in Ethiopia

Subject Outlook for Ethiopia's auto sector. Significance Ethiopia boasts a small auto manufacturing sector with large ambitions. The government has designs to become the top producer of cars in Africa within 20 years. Low current exports, shortages of foreign currency and quality concerns stand in the way of this grand goal. Impacts Increased car ownership will spur the government to expand road infrastructure. South Africa's auto industry will continue to dominate the continent's production. Efforts by Kenya to increase automotive production could spur regional competition.

Significance National GDP nevertheless contracted by just 1.5% in 2020 -- less than almost any other country in Latin America. Resilient remittances and exports, coupled with unprecedented policy support, have mitigated the effects of the pandemic and subsequent containment measures, leaving the country better placed for recovery than its neighbours. Impacts Enduring poverty, inequality and violent crime, and the impacts of accelerating climate change, will drive further migration from Guatemala. The government will pursue banking law reforms, to reduce risks to financial activities in the post-pandemic business environment. Infighting and corruption scandals will hinder the opposition's ability to benefit from the decline of the president's popularity.

The manufacturing sector has greater responsibility for conducting and operating its business. The primary objective of every unit is to maximize profits. The manufacturing sector is the key driver of energy consumption and if an automobile consumes high fuel or if the resources are under-utilized, it is definitely the fault of the manufacturer. If we seriously need a solution to these problems, we need to change the way we design, manufacture, and sell the products. The manufacturing sector must use energy and resources efficiently. ‘Green Manufacturing' or sustainable industrial activity is the need of the hour and the Government of India requires the manufacturing sector to play a bigger role in the country's economy. This paper focuses on the initiative taken by the industries to make the environment eco-friendly. The paper further will emphasize upon a case study of Hero MotoCop.

Subject Oil and COVID-19 shocks in Azerbaijan. Significance The COVID-19 pandemic and oil price collapse present a dual challenge to the government, whose economic or political responses are likely to mirror its behaviour in past crises. Despite reasonable fiscal strength, there are policy risks in areas such as defending the national currency at the cost of depleting foreign currency reserves. Impacts Demands for healthcare and welfare spending will rise, as will unemployment. The banking sector looks vulnerable: four major banks are already in temporary administration. The size of the shadow economy makes it difficult to assess numbers of lay-offs and the resulting demand for welfare assistance.

Subject Philippines automobile sector expansion efforts. Significance The Comprehensive Automotive Resurgence Strategy (CARS) became active on January 3, following its announcement by the trade and industry department (DTI) and release of the implementing rules and regulations in 2015. CARS is the most ambitious industrial policy initiative of President Benigno Aquino's administration, seeking to turn the Philippines from a vehicles importer into a regional automotive production hub. Impacts The DTI hopes for 6.4 billion dollars in new economic activity from CARS, and up to 200,000 new jobs. CARS is unlikely to be a 2016 election issue, or to be reversed after Aquino's administration ends in May. The government will need to factor increasing auto usage into its development planning, perhaps requiring new roads.

Subject Egypt's social protection programmes. Significance A sizeable proportion of the population has been hit by the November 2016 currency devaluation, intended to quell distortions in the foreign currency market, in which the Egyptian pound lost more than half of its value. Living standards were hit hard, both by the effects of the 50% devaluation and by successive hikes in fixed prices for subsidised fuel and electricity. Inflation averaged 30% during 2017 and has only come down marginally to about 18% on average in the first eight months of 2018. The government has expanded its social protection system in the face of these pressures. Impacts The demand for protein-rich food will increase as cash transfers boost income. The cash provision is likely to lead to more overcrowding in schools in poor areas. The government will seek a political dividend from new social programmes as it tries to bolster its legitimacy.

Significance The IT sector has been an unmitigated success in recent years and formerly coexisted with the government, but internet shutdowns raised operational risks, and the industry's staff have become progressively involved in civic action. Impacts IT outsourcing is an important source of foreign currency revenues, which may now decline. Neighbouring Ukraine, Poland and the Baltic states are set to benefit if IT companies move out of Belarus. The Belarusian service sector would suffer from a mass exodus of skilled and well-paid IT workers.

Subject CJEU ruling on Swiss-franc mortgages. Significance A long-anticipated ruling by the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) on October 3 opens the way for the annulment of foreign currency (FX)-linked mortgage contracts in Poland whose terms have been deemed to be unfair by local courts. It is a partial victory for the mortgage holders. Impacts The ruling will shield banks from the immediate conversion of loans into zloty-based contracts at a favourable exchange rate for borrowers. The ruling is non-binding and merely provides guidance for Polish courts. Polish bank stocks and the zloty have fared well since the CJEU announced its decision.

Complexity academic level The case provides an opportunity for participants to step into the shoes of Doshi and plan a way to expand Vardhman Envirotech (VE) business by either entering the government segment or by undertaking international market expansion. In doing so, participants should understand the existing strategy by taking into consideration the aspects regarding the manner in which VE’s Injection Recharge Well differs from the existing recharge well solutions. VE lack of experience in government segment, as well as international markets provides an interesting context for the case discussion wherein participants have to examine the positives and challenges of both expansion opportunities and decide the way forward. Significance So far, state-sector price controls and price caps on food and private markets have prevented runaway inflation. However, producers are withholding goods or selling on the black market, exacerbating shortages. Dollars trade on the street for twice the official exchange rate. Impacts Food shortages and rising prices will fuel discontent; criticism of the government will grow on social media. The dollarised retail sector and the ubiquitous black market will constrain coherent economic policy planning. Havana hopes COVID-19 vaccine development will help revive international tourism and become a new foreign currency earner.
