Diponegoro University is one reputable university belonging to Indonesia. This state university is located in Semarang, Central Java Province. Global dynamics have also colored its journey in implementing its traditionally assigned three missions: teaching, conducting research, and providing public services. These make this university highly confident heading to become a research university. A research university is a step to take that the university has its competitiveness to compete with the others in the world. There are some Higher Education-rankings institutions which evaluate all Higher Education Institutions in the world, such as Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings, Times Higher Education (THE) University Rankings, 4 International Colleges and Universities (4ICU), and Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). Meanwhile, the ministry which has the function to make coordination with higher education institutions in Indonesia has also conducted higher education institutional ratings, primarily for Indonesian internal needs. The criteria of a research university refer to those evaluated by the higher education institutional ratings in the international level. A research university is a new paradigm which encourages a higher education institution in Indonesia to become highly confident to globally compete with the others in the whole world.

Established in 1997, Ton Duc Thang University (TDTU) is now among the best universities in Vietnam for all aspects, after 20 years of development. With sixteen faculties of multi-disciplines and around 25,000 students, TDTU has made lots of achievements. In 2017, TDTU is ranked 245th in the world (and ranked 1st in Vietnam) on Sustainable Development by UI GreenMetric World University Rankings (UI GreenMetric); ranked 1st among universities in Vietnam for high-quality research outputs by Nature Index; ranked 2nd among universities in Vietnam (and ranked 1st in research category) by Xephangdaihoc, a group of independent experts of Vietnam. Sustainability is of TDTU’s focus. This paper shortly discussed TDTU’s latest achievements on sustainability, and then focused on issues and innovation in managing waste at Ton Duc Thang University.

Universities play an important role in the economic development - knowledge economy. Previous studies proposition that universities significantly contribute to the economic development of the countries. Countries implement policies to efficiently connect higher education and the economy. This study explores the relationships between the university performances measured by the world university rankings and the gross domestic product. We employed the data from the World Bank and two university rankings for a period of 2011-2016. We ran correlation analysis followed by t-test analysis for confirming the linear and non-linear relationship. For robustness, we used chi-squared test for independence. The result shows there is a positive non-linear relationship between university performances and GDP. Indicators for citation and research suggests the quality of the research matters more than the mere research and publications. We may conclude that the “research quality” of the university intensive in researching can contribute indirectly to the economic development of the countries.

It is necessary to know the state of the Chinese universities. In this paper the general objective was determine the situation of Chinese universities: Problems, COVID-19 & efforts. Methodology, in this research, 31 documents have been selected, carried out in the period 2016 - 2021; including: scientific articles, review articles and information from websites of recognized organizations. The keywords used in the searches were: Chinese universities and COVID-19. Results, China has approximately 2,845 universities, which are gradually improving their infrastructure and academic level. The percentage of women has increased (UIS.UNESCO, 2021). A close collaboration between the university and the industry was presented as they refer (Hou, Hong & Shi, 2021). Employers consider the University of Hong Kong to have the best graduates (SICAS, 2018). Difficulty deciding what to investigate. The situation in Chinese universities is stabilizing, after COVID-19 was presented, continuing with virtual courses and the intensive use of ICTs. In addition, the progressive opening of these institutions, monitoring the health of students and teachers. Conclusions, Chinese universities are ranking better in world rankings such as the QS World University Rankings. They are overcoming the limitations imposed by COVID-19. The number of graduates, researchers and patents is considerable and competes with the great powers of Europe, Asia and North America. In addition, some of its universities are achieving international recognition and have students from various parts of the world.

The article presents the rating of higher education institutions of the world in 2016, including the position of Russian universities. The methodology and indicators used in the formation of the rating, and its results are analyzed. The article considers the three most well-known rankings - Shanghai (ARWU), QS World University Rankings, The World University Rankings.

The most important condition of modern world globalization for university system is the position of the uni-versity, its role and place, both in its own country and in the world positioning. Getting into the world ranking in the leading places, universities sharply increase their attractiveness not only for applicants, but also for employers, investors and the state, which can provide additional subsidies. The article considers the position of the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics in the QS World University Rankings.

The main objective of this paper is to illustrate the current status of quality assurance practices and identify challenges and opportunities facing Tribhuvan University (TU) in general and higher education institutions of TU in particular. Apart from a range of benefits and prospects from adopting and implementing the Quality Assurance and Accreditation (QAA) system within TU, it has been facing a number of challenges in maintaining quality in its higher education institutions. In return, the implementation of the system can create a number of opportunities, particularly it has to internationalize its higher education and show a strong presence in the world university rankings. In order to meet this objective, the study has used a descriptive-analytical approach to find out the issues related to quality assurance in higher education institutions. Finally, the paper has made important policy implications and recommendations to support the ongoing efforts of UGC, Nepal and maintain and ensure quality in higher education institutions of TU.

Mehran University of Engineering & Technology is a public university established in 1973. Wit seventeen faculties of multi-disciplines and having more than 7,500 students, MUET has made lots of achievements. In 2019, MUET is ranked 271 in the world, 2nd in Pakistan, 1st in Sindh Province, and slotted 275th in terms of Energy and Climate change (EC) indicators implementations on Sustainable development by UI GreenMetric World University Rankings. UI GreenMetric is a sustainability-based ranking whose aim is to provide rankings of universities all over the world based on their efforts for the implementation of pre-define indicator criteria. One of the criteria for this ranking is the Energy and Climate change (EC) indicator which had a most 21 percent weightage. In this review, this paper presents a detailed analysis for the implementation of EC indicators of UI GreenMetric World University Rankings to reduce carbon dioxide footprints and maintain sustainability at MUET gymnasium fitness facility. In this mechanism, an Energy Efficient Flywheel-Based KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) Bicycle Generator is designed and developed. Additionally, a techno-economic (Energy, Cost and Co2 emission saving) beneficial analysis of generators with their usage as a free renewable energy source to overcome luminosity demand of MUET gymnasium fitness facility by an efficient LED lighting system and their relative relation with the EC indicator implementation is also discussed.

Purpose – The region's universities are “riding a tiger” of university rankings in East Asian higher education, in a race to gain in the list of the world's top 100 universities. While this race impacts universities throughout the world, it takes on particular importance in East Asia due to the stage of university development and the needs of regional societies. The purposes of this paper are to: To examine the emergent global emphasis on world university ranking as a driver of change in higher education, To discuss how the world university rankings are impacting East Asian universities, To assess consequences for higher education in the region, To explore options for leading universities in a more meaningful direction in East Asia. Design/methodology/approach – This paper examines research and commentary on the impact of world university rankings on universities in East Asia. Findings – This paper proposes that the world university rankings have, over a relatively short period of time, had unanticipated but potentially insidious effects on higher education in East Asia. This paper proposes that the “tiger” is carrying most East Asian universities towards goals that may not reflect the aspirations of their societies, or the people that work and study in them. Yet, climbing off the “tiger” often feels just as risky as hanging on to its back. Instead of seeking to lay blame at any one party, the paper suggests that the problem is systemic in nature. Multiple parts of the system need to change in order to achieve effects in the distal parts (e.g. faculty, students, and society). Only leadership can bring about this type of change. The scholarly community must gain some degree of input and monitoring over the rules of the rankings game. Only by joining hands can university leaders in the region change the “Ranking Game” to reflect the reality and needs of university development and social contribution in East Asia. Only by cooperation can the region's university leaders create reciprocal pressure on other parts of the system. In response to systemic problems, “I” may be powerless, but “we” are not. Originality/value – The originality and value of this paper lie in its aim to elevate underlying dissatisfaction with the rankings into a broader and more explicit debate over the direction in which East Asian universities are riding on the back of the tiger.
