Non Communicable diseases (NCDs) are now endemic in low and middle income countries. Nepal had a high burden of communicable diseases (CDs) which has now been overtaken by NCDs. Although prevention and control of NCDs is prioritized in national policies and strategies, there is no proper monitoring system. This study aims to review the morbidity pattern among the adults seeking preventive general health checkup in a major tertiary care hospital in Kathmandu. 3000 cases were evaluated. 53.6% were males and 46.4% were females. The mean age of cases was 44.9 yrs. Most of the cases ranged from 40 to 60 years of age. Almost half of them were from Kathmandu district. Nearly 78% participants live a sedentary life. Abdominal obesity was seen in 27.5% of females and 21.7% of males. Nearly 49% of cases were overweight and 24% were obese. Almost 21 % of the cases were smokers and about 36% of them consumed alcohol. Only 9% are vegetarians. 10% have diabetes and 20% have hypertension. 69% of females and 43% of males have less than normal bone mineral density. The government and private sectors must focus on strengthening preventive and curative services for early detection of risk factors and management of NCDs.

AbstractThe overall effect of lifestyle habits, such as alcohol consumption, on general health remains controversial and it is important to clarify how such habits affect aging-related health impairments. To discover novel impacts of lifestyle on general health, we employed a mathematical approach to perform a comprehensive, unbiased, cross-sectional analysis of data from 6036 subjects who participated in a Japanese health checkup. Notably, we found that moderate alcohol consumption was positively correlated with lung function, muscle mass, and strength. Health checkup data were collected periodically from the same subjects. These people were light to moderate drinkers who had high health awareness and were basically free of major underlying diseases. We next analyzed 5 years of data from 1765 of these subjects. We found that higher baseline alcohol consumption, as well as increased alcohol intake over 5 years attenuated time-related deterioration of forced vital capacity without affecting total lung volume. This effect was independent of smoking. Our study suggests a possible protective effect of moderate amounts of alcohol on lung function, due to increased muscle mass/strength and forced vital capacity.

Introduction Metabolic syndrome is one of the major concerns of modern health causing morbidity and mortality. The metabolic syndrome is the constellation of metabolic disorders - insulin resistance; obesity, dyslipidemia and hypertension that are interrelated which lead to higher risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke, atherosclerosis and serious health condition. The study focused on the prevalence of all the metabolic syndrome cases that came to general health checkup (GHC) of Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital. MethodsThe study was a cross-sectional retrospective study of all cases that came to GHC from July 2019 to October 2019. GHC records files of all patients that came for their general health check-up were used to obtain data that included demographic details and the criteria for metabolic syndrome. Waist circumference, weight, height and blood investigations were sent as a routine examination of the general health checkup. Data analysis was done in Microsoft Excel 2019 and SPSS 20. ResultsAmong 311 cases enrolled in our study, 99 (31.8%) met the revised National Cholesterol Education Program, Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP ATP III) criteria for metabolic syndrome. Among those with metabolic syndrome, males were 52 (52.53%) and females were 47 (47.47%). Also, 81 (81.81%) out of 99 cases had decreased HDL (<1.03 mmol/L for males and <1.30 mmol/L for females), which was the most common component of metabolic syndrome in the study. ConclusionMetabolic syndrome is present in almost one third of the studied apparently healthy patients coming for general health checkup and it emphasizes on awareness regarding screening for metabolic syndrome.
