The increasing demand for electricity along with the development of distributed generators showed that improving transmission efficiency and reliability is an indispensable requirement in the operation of the power system. Advanced technologies need to be applied to modern power systems for purposes of conveying large power flows, mitigating the risk of faults. High-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission is now considered an effective solution for investment in large-length power lines, replacing the conventional high-voltage alternative current (HVAC) transmission system, especially in period of increasing generation capacity due to the penetration of renewable energy sources. This study assesses the performance of the HVDC system on an actual power grid based on planning and improvement demands. The calculation results of power flows, power losses and short-circuit faults were investigated using ETAP software X

This paper investigated the characteristics of a novel type of hybrid high voltage direct current (HVdc) converter, which is composed by line commutated converter series with voltage source converter. The system and valve level control strategies are introduced, which can provide ac system voltage support. A novel filter design scheme composed by resonant filers for hybrid HVdc are also proposed, which can decrease the capacity of reactive power compensation equipment without deteriorate harmonic characteristics. The ac voltage of HVdc fluctuation level caused by transmitted power variation will be effectively reduced, with the coordination between filter design scheme and converter control. In addition, the influence of ac grid strength is also analyzed by equivalent source internal impedance represented by short circuit ratio (SCR). Finally, the +800 kV/1600 MW hybrid HVdc system connecting two ac grids under different SCR cases are studied, and the PSCAD/EMTDC simulation results have validated the effectiveness for proposed strategy.

A modular multilevel converter based high-voltage DC (MMC-HVDC) system has been the most promising topology for HVDC. A reclosing scheme is usually configured because temporary faults often occur on transmission lines especially when overhead lines are used, which often brings about an overcurrent problem. In this paper, a new fault current limiter (FCL) based on reclosing current limiting resistance (RCLR) is proposed to solve the overcurrent problem during the reclosing process. Firstly, a mesh current method (MCM) based short-circuit current calculation method is newly proposed to solve the fault current calculation of a loop MMC-HVDC grid. Then the method to calculate the RCLR is proposed based on the arm current to limit the arm currents to a specified value during the reclosing process. Finally, a three-terminal loop MMC-HVDC test grid is constructed in the widely used electromagnetic transient simulation software PSCAD/EMTDC and the simulations prove the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.

This paper determines the minimum short circuit ratio (SCR) requirement for a modular multilevel converter based high-voltage direct current (MMC-HVDC) transmission systems. Firstly, a simplified model of MMC is introduced; the MMC is represented by its AC and DC side equivalent circuit. Next, by linearizing the MMC subsystem and the DC network subsystem, the deduction of the small-signal models of MMC subsystem, the small-signal model of the DC network and MMC-HVDC are carried out successively. Thirdly, the procedure for determining the minimum SCR requirement of MMC-HVDC is described. Finally, case studies are performed on a two-terminal MMC-HVDC system under four typical control schemes. The results show that the restraint factors for the rectifier MMC is predominantly the voltage safety limit constraint, and the restraint factors for the inverter MMC are mainly the phase locked loop (PLL) or the outer reactive power controller. It is suggested that the minimum SCR requirement for the sending and the receiving systems should be 2.0 and 1.5 in the planning stage.

The potential short-circuit current in active distribution network features time-variance with the increasing distributed generations. This feature makes the online estimation of fault level necessary. In this paper, a novel online estimation method is proposed to be implemented by either phasor measurement unit (PMU) or the measurements from protection relays. The equivalent circuit of the radial distribution network with distributed generators (DGs), e.g., wind turbines and photovoltaic cells, is derived with necessary simplifications. The natural disturbances downstream are used to evaluate the parameters of the equivalent circuit so that the potential fault level can be estimated in advance of the actual fault occurrence. A fuzzy logic identifier is presented to rank the confidence of the measurements incurred by the disturbance and to distinguish the qualified disturbance to launch the estimation. The mechanism based on multi-measurements and confidence indices was applied, to improve the accuracy. A typical distribution network in the United Kingdom (UK) with DGs was taken, as an example, to validate the proposed method under various load fluctuation. The results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method, which is suitable for online estimation of short-circuit fault level in active distribution networks.

The short-circuit impedance of converter transformers is one of the most important specifications in HVDC system. Compared with the traditional converter transformers, the new converter transformer has unique windings connection diagrams. Based on the topological structure of the new converter transformer, this paper proposes a new method to establish the mathematical relationship of short-circuit impedances and filters impedances under considering the valve side and grid side shortcircuit conditions. The analysis on short circuit at valve side and grid side shows that short-circuit impedances values are almost the same in both two conditions, so that the impedance of the new converter transformer is symmetrical. Finally, simulation and experimental results verify the correctness of the theoretical analysis.

The Network Code for HVDC systems introduces a requirement for such systems to remain in operation in an AC network during short-circuits. This requirement (among others) is determined by a time curve of a minimum voltage in HVDC connection point. The HVDC system is not allowed to be turned-off while the voltage value exceeds the values of the curve, however the HVDC system in LCC technology does not meet this requirement. The Network Code introduces the possibility of blocking the LCC systems. After the LCC system is blocked it stops transmitting the power, which prevents the LCC system from being turned off during a short-circuit in the network but results in a lack of power exchange between the network and the LCC system. Therefore, the authors developed a proposal to limit the power level being transmitted by the LCC system, thus there is no necessity to block the LCC system operation. The simulation research carried out clearly indicate the validity of this idea. In addition, the authors presented the concept of an automation system that adaptively adjusts the scale of the LCC system power level reduction to change the network operating conditions during a short-circuit in the network. The operation of this automation system is presented for the practical LCC system model installed in the Polish Power System.
